Subject: Arnold Schwarzenegger Running for Govenor of CA

I think it's a bad idea. Though I rarely speak of politics.

Anybody remember the bit in Demolition Man where Sandra Bullock talks about the "Schwarzenegger Presidential Library", and Stallone is somewhat non-plussed - reckon it's going to happen?

He'll be back ;-)

Heheh.  Yeah, i mentioned that in another thread.  I'd prefer to see President Springer.  I can imagine him doing 'shows' with leaders of various countries who have bad relations 'Well, Jerry, the fact is the Kashmir is ours, so Pakistan can talk to the hand'  :-/ or something  :-X

He's been rubbing elbows with key republican figures for years, most notably Reagan (while in office) and Bush Sr.

I'd like to believe Schwarzenegger is an honest guy who would remain a good guy even when involved in official politics.

Money/fund raising can quickly corrupt a politician.  But, as Arnold pointed out yesterday in an interview, he certainly doesn't need the money, so maybe taking the financial aspect out of it might help to keep him honest.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out thats for sure.

Looking at Ah-nuld's profile, even though he's on the moderate side (which isn't a bad thing, mind you!) he's still the best candidate out of the field to me, and he has the name recognition and the charisma to garner support through the initiative system to maybe turn the state around mid-term.  Asking a new governor to fix the old governor's booboos in two years is a bit much, but Ah-nuld is a very shrewd and intelligent businessman, which is why he's filthy rich after coming to America with nothing.

The major candidate list:

Democrats:

Cruz Bustamante, California's lieutenant governor

Audie Bock, former state assemblywoman

Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine

March Fong Eu, former state secretary of state

Green Party:

Peter Camejo, 2002 Green Party candidate for governor

Independent:

Arianna Huffington, columnist (yeah, you gotta be kidding me)

Republicans:

Tom McClintock, state senator

Keith Richman, state assemblyman

Arnold Schwarzenegger, actor

Bill Simon, businessman, 2002 gubernatorial candidate

I think that it was hillarious that after she came out and said that she was running, her exhusband Michael Huffington made an announcement that he is backing Arnold Schwarzenegger

I could not agree with you more. One of the few republicans I would have voted for was John McCain. Even though I am not a republican, somebody has to take the money out of elections. And if we can not get democrats to do it, I would consider a republican for 1 term if they could push it through.

Yeah, didn't Gary Coleman file bankruptcy not too long ago?  I think I'd be a bit leery about voting for someone who can't quite manage his own finances....especially if he were going to be governor of a state that's broke!  ;D

What I was reffering to is the buying of public offices. Nobody runs for office anymore, instead they get some advertising, make commercials, and wait to see what product the people buy. Will you buy a Big Mac today, or a Whopper? Take the money out of politics and force the candidates to tell you what they really think. Do not allow candidates to side-step questions because they think the anwser will cost them a percentage point or two. Force them to write down their policy positions, and publish it in a paper.

I know this is a bit off-topic so please forgive me. This morning in the paper, there was an editorial about Howard Dean being a contender-not because of his record, or because of his standing in the polls but because of the fact that he was able to raise $$$. It comes down to the golden rule-"He who has the gold makes the rules".

As for California (yes, getting back to the topic), I think that "Ah-nuld" has the popularity to win but I don't think he has the skills to do the job. That is my opinion. And dispite what anyone says, any election IS a populary contest. And if you have the bucks, you can buy yourself an awful lot of votes.

Yeah, Issa is a respected Congressman though so he's still got himself a job.  He figured that with Ah-nuld running, it'd be all good.

An important factor I heard somewhere:  Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a career politican, and as such, does not have a proven political track record.  You can pretty much ascribe any political views you want to him; he's a blank slate.
