Subject: USA women win first ever gold in world gymnastics

Written By: Marian on 08/21/03 at 10:34 a.m.

:D :D :D :DThe USA women's gymnastic team won the first ever gold medal in the World Gymnastics Championships.THis was despite losing 3 members who would have had a good chance at winning individual medals in the competition.Tabitha Yim wasn't there, either.THe ones they lost during the championships were Annia Portundo Hatch,Ashley Postell, and Courtney Kuppets. This competition was important because the top 12 teams qualify for the Olympic team competition, held next year.Congratulations to the Usa team!Cheers! :D :D

I'm glad for the USA as a team, but what happened to Tasha Schweikert? Wasn't she supposed to be the main US hope for an individual medal in the Olympics? And would the US even be in the running if the World Championship were held outside the US? Still, congratulations USA women.

:) :) :)Tasha was indeed on the team and helped secure the team gold, but didn't do well enough for the individual all around competition.I would say they would still be in the running;competing in the US didn't cause them to perform perfectly. If the USA was helped in any way,I would say it was due to the inexperience of some of the other teams like the Romanians(all younger girls that most people had never heard of)and China.Their team was good but China says it sent it's "B" team to this Championships;however that's about what the USA had to do as well.China seems to have lost the bronze medal because it got a .2 point deduction due to some of the gymnasts taking too long to get started on their routines after the 'go' flag went up.The Russians with the exception of Svetlana Khorkina also did poorly;their team ended up no where near the top.Cheers!
