Subject: I LOVE THE MIDWEST!

Written By: DizzleJ on 09/02/03 at 08:26 p.m.

My idea for this topic is for people to shout put where they live and what they love about where they are. Be specific, like if you live in America, Where? Midwest, South. etc.
Same if you live in England. London, Bristol, etc.

Let's here your pride!

I am from the Midwest. Illinois to be specific. Boy do I love it out here! We get all the seasons very well defined out here. You know Chicago Summers and Winters. Fall in the farmlands. Also out here people really celebrate holidays. Whatever the holiday, EVERYBODY celebrates! And when people don't, others are like what's with that?!?
The movie Christmas Vacation takes place in Chicago/Illinois area! That should give you a good idea. This are is mostly white, especially in rural areas. However the more urban go the more diversity you get. Some areas are filled with Poles, or Italians, or Mexicans, or African Americans. As far as whites go, there is like a mini racial war sometimes. You know- Irish Vs. Poles vs. Italians. These are three major forces as far as whites go. I live in the suburbs and out here are mostly Poles, but we do have Italians. One friend I have has all three! Polish, Irish, and Italian.
Anyway out here there is only one football team- Da Bears!
Of course we do have many fair-weather fans... We also have plenty of Wisconsians who moved down here and they are major Cheese Heads!! But when a Chicago team is doing really good, we don't ever forget!! Like the Bears won the superbowl in 85' but, we have drawn that victory all the way out to 2003. And believe you me, If the Bears make it to the Superbowl this next season, you won't hear the end of it!!

I have to go now, but I will post more!! ;D

I was born and live in Colorado Springs..some say I've even "Grown Up"...but don't be fooled!  Anyway...I am very fond of Chicago....back in the late 70's to early 80's I used to listen to AM 89 WLS "The Rock Of Chicago"  :)

Here in the Pacific Northwest I don't think there's much to love.  It's boring here in what might as well be called Hickville.  Washington, the only state that you actually have to SAY it's a state because if you don't everyone says "DC?"

Perhaps it's just participating in sports. He could just like to watch them.

Well I live in Durham, not far from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the North East of England.
When I was younger, I always used to wish that I lived somewhere more "cosmpolitan" like London.  However, now I know that there's nowhere else I'd rather live!
The people round here are more friendly than anywhere else I've been in England for a start!!  Don't get me wrong, I do love a lot of England, but there's definitely a special warmth here!
Also theres lots of culture.......Durham's famous cathedral is a world heritage site, and Newcastle is  a scenic city, full of great architecture, not to forget my favourite football (soccer) team, Newcastle United, who aren't doing so well at the moment :'(
We are also lucky to live in a very rural area.  Although there's some large cities like Newcastle, they are all not far from masses of countryside!  I only live 3 miles outside of Durham , which is a very busy little city, but my house is surrounded by fields!
We are also in easy travelling distance of many other great places.  Within an hour you can drive to Cumbria (The Lake District), North Yorkshire, the Northumbria coast or even Scotland.
I think the only bad points about living here are the weather often being cold and maybe people up here not being as aware or tolerant of any "differences" such as ethnic minorities or homosexual people :'(
But aside from that, I'd recommend it to anyone!

I live in Plymouth, England in the South West.

It is allright but a little too 'rustic' for me. I am an urban person really.

Plymouth has great countrysides, it is near beaches and seaside resorts like Paignton, Polperro, Looe and Cornwall is up the road. The nightlife is usually good and if you would like a trip to Dartmoor, we are near that too.

Plymouth has lousy weather (has does most places in England) but it is nice to live.

I wouldn't fight for it though, DizzleJ.  ;)

I lovermont!!!

We have it all.  Cold winters, snow, warm spring and summer, colorful falls.  Lake Champlain is GREAT regardless of what Congress says.  The people are friendly - once you get past that New England reserve - and very tolerant, as long as you don't scare the horses.

Tourist to Vermonter: "So, have you lived in Vermont all your life?"

Vermonter "Not Yet!"

I still think that for the most part, but I have tons of pride in anything Chicago based. Like when the Bulls were playing the jazz for championship. I still can't watch baseball though... :-/

Anyway, let me continue my pride of the Illinoisians ;D
We have the America's tallest building: The Sears Tower.
I think the people out here are great. Polite, funny people. Lots of humor out here. Of course people work very hard out here. We are not as easy going. But we are not uptight either. Jim Belushi and Bill Murray were born in Chicago land.
We have really good newstations. Both on television and on the radio. There is lots of music in Illinois. We have rockers, rappers, ravers, and plently of Country listeners. ::)
I think it is all the snow that makes midwesterners the way they are. Most like snow and look forward to it. A beautiful day to an Illinoisian is usually 60-70 with a cool breeze. We have pretty good thunderstorms too. Strangely though, lots of people from other states move out here. So we are actually very diverse in that sense. Anyway, I can't think of anything else. I just love this area ;D

By the way cudos to everyone for shoutin' out thier pride!  :D

Oh I see what you mean,

Anyways, about the pride.

I love living in Canada; being surrounded by enourmous mountains and wildlife is great. It's nice and warm in the summer and @#$*ing cold in the winter.

We have great sport's greatly enjoyed worldwide (Hockey, Lacrosse etc.)

But we don't have a large army therefore being made fun of all the time (although I don't mind).

Let's here some more pride!

I agree.  I can't stand the weather chick on FOX, though.  The one who wears the leather stuff.  She just looks and acts like a bimbo. ::)

Snow is good.  Ice sucks.  I have to say that the weather here in IL today was perfect.  Not too hot, not too cold, and with a nice breeze.  Beautiful night to take the kids to the fair.

Don't forget, "supposedly", Midwesterners have no accents, which is why a majority of call centers are based here. 8)

Oh, and always remember, if you don't like the weather in Chicago, wait a day and it'll change. ;)

I would like to add a little thing not about Illinois but about, westerners. Believe it or not people from Utah have thier own distinct accent. As to some people from Arizona. I would almost say that the whole west has its own accent. Just like there is a southern accent, I believe there is a "Western" accent. Not so much, people from California or Floridans. However these two states have a large amount of immigrants from all over the united states that contribute thier "nonaccent".

Also of note: most of the west was settled after the civil war. This mean there were plenty of southern accents that traveled west. So perhaps the Western accent is a cross between the accents of Southern and Northern families/ Civil War veterans.

Also: George W Bush clearly has a, I guess, Texan Accident.

Also: in Hulkeberry Finn, Mark Twain shows that Missourians have thier own accent.

Also: Lastly, Utah has interesting settlement patterns. Mostly Illinoisians at first. And Plenty of Swedish and British immigrants later on. This must of formed the Utah accent of today :)

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and as far as outdoor activities are concerned, it is the best place I have ever lived. One hour From Portland and you can be rafting, camping Skiing, and hiking.  Drive an hour in the other direction and your at the beach. I Have lived in Chicago, Denver, Augusta, and Norfolk.  The pacific northwest is the best by far.
