Subject: The Talk(s)....

Written By: 1992thousand on 09/04/03 at 07:45 p.m.

just wondering, i know today a lot of people talk about how uncomfortable parents are talking to their kids about lots of issues they may be faced with. So i wonder, who here got "The Talk" about sex, drugs, relationships, etc...

I personally didnt get the talk at all. So when i was a senior in HS, i asked my mom why she never talked to me about "drugs or anything" she said, almost a seemingly a bit defensively "didn't they teach you that stuff in school?" i said yea and she was like "well ok" and that was that. I guess she always assumed i would make smart choices when it came to things like that(and, well, im not a daddy, i never smoked a cig, and ive never been anything close to drunk, so i guess i have)

I think for a lot of parents maybe its also that now that there are many single-parent run households, it might be a father-daughter or mother-son relationship and that makes it a tad more uncomfortable to talk about sex specifically.

I had my talk in early June of 2000.  I was in Gr. 7 at the time.  It was a "all in one" talk.  It included everything from the "lack of evidence" that Santa Clause existed (I already knew personally for some years before, but never told my parents) and the sex/drug thing. I already knew most of the stuff they were telling me, but I still listened.  I knew that it was probably more embarassing and tougher on my parents than on myself.

I never got "the talk" from either of my parents.  I was exposed to drugs at a fairly early age (my mother was a hippie with a drug habit) and experimented some but ultimately decided that they weren't for me.  As for the whole sex thing.  I was told that good girls don't until they get married.  Some talk, huh?
But with my own kids, we've always been very open about sex and drugs.  I ask questions of them and I can only hope they are being truthful with me.  I have three boys and I have tried to impress the importance of safe sex, etc on them.
Not just because I'm not ready to be a grandma but because of all the other issues.  I don't feel at all uncomfortable talking to my boys about sex and they don't seem to be uncomfortable with me either.  I wish my parents had been more open.  I think it's all in the approach.  I've never made a big issue of it.  Just discussed it like it's an everyday topic but one that's important.  I wish more parents felt comfortable talking about it with their kids and I hope that my kids are able to be as open with their own kids about it.

My parents are just happy that I haven't given them any grandchildren yet.

The only "talk" I ever got was the girl talk.  Everything else I just learned on my own and my parents would occasionally say "don't do it!"

I never got "the talk." I just always knew. We used to have (unfixed) cats when I was growing up so there was always kittens being born. I freaked one of our neighbors out when I was something like 5 or 6. I saw two of our cats "going at it" and I said to them, "Stop that! We don't want any more kittens."  :o

I didn't get an actual talk.  What I got were a few comments here and there explaining why I shouldn't do drugs.  As for sex, I think that my parents understood that telling a teenager about the facts of life is like trying teaching a fish to swim.

I got the talk in general terms....nowadays kids don't seem to need it with all the crap in the "music" and television that has oversaturated the need for having manners :-/
