Subject: 2003 NFL Football Season!

Written By: RockandRollFan on 09/05/03 at 10:36 a.m.

I feel bad that the Jets lost thier starting QB for most if not all the season.  What a game last night though :)  I can hardly wait until my Broncos play on Sunday!

After the whipping that Mr. Pennington gave the Colts in last year's playoff game (41-0), I don't feel as sad as a typical jets fan. I don't wish injury on any player, and it would have been great if our Colts could have avenged their licking in our Dome home. Get well soon, Chad. ;)

Final score:
Indianapolis 9, Cleveland 6.

Mike Vanderjagt kicks a 45 yard FG with 1 second.

It's hard for me to celebrate a Colts victory when the supposedly high-powered offense is reduced to 9 points against a mediocre Browns' D at best. It looks like the O has been watered down my defensive minded Dungy and his negligent ex-TB offensive coaches. I'm just glad they won.  ;D

Impressive Denver win but it was against the Bengals after all.....30-10...Portis looks like another Terrell Davis! Jake needs to settle down a bit but he still is better than that robot, Greise.  The Cowpies lost so...Now if the raiders can lose it will really be a good week :D

GO STEELERS! 34-whatever the ravens score was.

I wasn't able to watch the entire thing. So I am  not real clear on what the final score was, but my Steelers looked pretty awsome. Again, the secondary could have done a little less interferance, but a win is a win and I hope we make the needed adjustments.

Philly really had a tough Monday Night.  Not only did they get whipped at home in their new stadium by the Bucs, but they lost three starters.  I think two of them have sprained toes.  Does anyone know if the new stadium has turf?
Anyway, these NFL injuries are a real drag.  Pennington and Vick are two of the most exciting QBs to watch IMHO.  I hope they get better soon.  As a Cowboy fan I'm hoping Dallas can keep everyone healthy so they can win 5 games this year.  I know thats a high number for them but you gotta shoot high... ;D

Actually, the Vikings played at Metropolitan Stadium before it was torn down.  ;)
I agree that real football should be turf free. It's unfortunate how taxpayers spend over $70 million on a domed stadium, then we find out the turf causes more serious injuries than grass does. Add to that the mediocrity of the team stolen away from Baltimore, and the townsfolk just can't afford to keep or support another sports venue. The city just can't afford another outdoor or indoor stadium,  And IU's so-called Athletic Department team replaced their stadiums grass with artificial turf!!! :o ::) :P How dimwitted is that?

OK I agree with the basic premise that football (and baseball too) should be played outdoors.  But as someone that lives in Texas, near Houston....I feel like I have to defend the REASONING behind domed stadiums to you guys since we were the ones that started them waaay back in the 60s with the Astrodome.

In Houston, the heat and humidity can be excruiating.  Especially the humidity.  If you're not careful with your outdoor activities here, you can literally collapse an die from heat exhaustion.  It can be October, but you'll feel like you're in a suana on some Houston nights.  Sometimes there are mosquitos around the size of your FIST.  Sometimes in Houston it's scortching sunny heat, then suddenly it can be torential downpours of rain and even more humidity. YOU'RE CRAZY if you think anyone here was going to sit in an outdoor stadium in THAT kind of weather.  They tried to put sunlights on the old Astrodome back in the 60s, but grass simply would not grow there, so "Astroturf" was invented.  Sheesh, even up in Dallas, they have the Cowboys play in a near domed stadium to escape the scathing Texas heat.  The humidity isn't anywhere near as bad in Dallas/Iriving as it is in Houston, but Texas Stadium is practically indoors with the exception of that little hole at the top.  (yeah I know, so God can watch the Cowboys)

But the old Astrodome is a relic from the 1960s, shutdown and just sitting there.  Today the Astros play in relatively brand new Minute Maid Park (formerly Enron Field, you know why it had to be renamed  ::)  ).

And there is a new expansion football team in Houston called the Texans (since the old Oilers left for Nashville and became the Tennesse Titans) that play in the brand new Reliant Stadium.  The Texans are in their second year, but are off to a good start, 1-0 as of this writing after beating the Miami Dolphins last week.  Both of the new stadiums for baseball and football in Houston are "outdoors", but they have retractable roofs when the weather gets to be too much.

:)

^Like I said to escape the scathing Texas heat.  The heat and humidity isn't anywhere near as bad in Dallas as it in Houston, (because Houston and the South Texas coast is obviously a lot closer to the Gulf of Mexico) but sometimes it can be intense over there in Irving too.  That's why Texas Stadium is an "almost domed stadium", except that little hole at the top.  But if you ask people in Dallas, or other Cowboys fans why it's there....like I said they'll say "So God can watch his favorite team".  ::)

Stadiums with retractable roofs are the BEST.  You get the best of both worlds.  You can play outdoors with real grass, and the sports purists won't constantly look down on you and bust you up for "disgracing the game by playing indoors on that new fangled Astroturf".  But then when it rains and/or the weather gets too hot and humid as it often does here in the South, you can just close the roof up and you have a perfectly good excuse for doing so.  The old Astrodome was always picked by sports purists for starting the indoor baseball/football craze back in the 1960s.  But they never understood why it had to be done.  Let's see them come sit in a cheap open air stadium in South Texas at night, with these mutant mosquitos we have here, the high humidity, and swealtering heat.

:)

I hate FG's in overtime.  I am also not happy about sudden-death overtime in football, particularly when wins are almost guaranteed by a coin flip.

They should use college football's overtime setup.

Exactly!

NFL overtimes are, like you said, almost always determined by who wins the coin toss.  The only chance you have is a turnover or a freak-defensive stance.

I despise the whole BSC crap in college football, but I do love their overtime setup.  I agree it should be adopted by the NFL.

Sudden death in a game like football is just plain stupid..

In my opinion you have to play offense and defense. So what if there is a coin flip? I like the NFL setup in overtime.

Anyway, the Giants lost. They drove up and down the field the whole game and scored 6 points. They didn't do anything in the red zone.

The Jets killed the Bills sacking Drew Bledsoe 6 times. I hope the Jets can build off this win. They  have to win the next couple games to stay in the playoff hunt. Next up is Houston and then Philly. The Eagles-Jets should be a good game to watch. I wouldn't dismiss Houston: they did beat Miami this year. Are the Bills overrated anyway? They don't play with any fire. I saw them play the Eagles and they didn't look good in that game either.

I really don't like the Cowboys but Parcells is doing a great job with them.

Thats not the point.  Whats sucks about NFL overtimes is that if the winner of the toss can manage to get 10-20 yards on a drive, then manage to boot a lucky long field goal attempt, the games over.

Whats good about college is the clock determine the game, not a lucky long field goal attempt.

I guess it all comes down to what the fans want.  After all they do ultimately foot the bill.  And I, as a fan, would never go to a football game in a Midwest winter again as long as I live.

But as far as the retractable roof, thats a great concept.  However, those designs are extremely expensive, and are not an option to all cities because of that.

That's probably why the more vocal Colts' fans can't or won't want another tax increase for a retractable roof stadium. They only want Irsay to renew the lease on the RCA Dome and to remodel, which is impossible with the lack of space downtown has. Also the NFL wants more luxury seats and higher ticket prices. It's a lose-lose situation for the Horseshoes and their fans.

Finally they have chemistry and the results are finally showing. What I like about Tice is he can relate to the young players like Randy Moss. In today's game if the head coach can't relate to the young players the young players will walk all over their head coach. Tice has a certain "coolness factor" about him and a certain passion about the game of football that the young players on that team love.

On the Vikings playing the Giants I like the Giants but they are playing bad right now. To score only 10 points against the Eagles when you have Ike Hilliard, Jeremy Shockey, Tiki Barber, and Armani Toomer is a mystery to me. The Giants have just looked stale for the past few Sundays.

My other team the Jets are looking alot better. They came back from 14 points down to defeat Houston. That shows heart and they never quit. Santana Moss is looking like a Pro Bowl Player the last 2 Sundays. Shaun Ellis is playing fantastic at Defensive End. The Running game is getting there with Curtis Martin and LaMont Jordan. The offensive line has gone alot better since the season has started. Lastly, the Jets could have lost that game. Houston Wide Reciever Andre Johnson on the last play of the game took his eye off the ball. If he hadn't taken his eye off the ball and if he caught it would have been the game winning touchdown.

Maybe they can go un-beaten for the season and win the Super Bowl!  I hope if the Broncos don't then the Chiefs do....Miami is the ONLY team to go through a season without a loss...they had 17 straight wins...although the 49'rs AND Broncos won 18 straight over 2 seasons...the fact remains that Miami in 1972 had the weakrest schedule in the league so I hope if somebody breaks that record it will be someone from the AFC Best West :D

The Cowboys last won the Super Bowl what in 1996? The 49ers last won the Super Bowl in 1995 if I remember right. Packers last won in 1997 and the Raiders last won in 1983. So those teams don't win every year. lets see every year since 97:

98 Broncos
99 Broncos
00:Rams
01: Ravens
02: Patriots
03: Bucs

So in the last 6 super Bowls 4 different teams have won the Super Bowl Trophy. Not bad.

The Jets lost. The decision for Chad Pennington to go in the game was questionable by coach Herman Edwards all week to me. Should have left Vinny Testaverde in there and then let Chad start next week. Missed opportunity's killed the Jets. Santana Moss fumbled the ball when the Jets were driving down for a score towards the end of the first half. Curtis Conway didn't see a ball that was coming to him on 3rd down and 7 yards to go which killed another potential scoring drive. The Jets defense still can't stop the run. The Eagles were running the football all game on the Jets. DE  John Abarham getting injured to did not help matters.

My other team the Giants stole a game from the Vikings. The Vikings always have had trouble with the Giants match-up wise even going back to the Phil Simms/OJ Anderson years of 89-90. The Vikings have always been a football team that was based on speed while the Giants just seem to wear the Vikings down during the second half whenever the Giants and Vikings play each other. Wide Reciever Ike Hillard had a great game and Michael Starhan had a few sacks. Who knows maybe these teams meet each other in the playoffs again.

Giants-Jets next week: Whoever wins this game still keeps their playoff hopes alive. Whoever loses this game comes closer to saying well wait till next season.

Who's the Bears quarterback now? Is Kordell Stewart still their quarterback? Also the Bears winning games I'm not shocked at. San Diego and Detroit are two of the worst teams in the NFL.

Well the Giants won the battle of New York beating the Jets in OT 31-28. It was a good game when the offenses of boh teams actually showed up for the game in the second half. Chad Pennington almost bought the Jets back to win the game. I just think the Giants were just the better team. Its always the same with the Giants: get a big lead, blow it, and then lose or win the win game. Next week: Giants play Falcons: Vick is back and the Falcons played Philly pretty close today. The Giants should win that game. Jets season is basically over still they should be able to beat Oakland this coming week but you never know. When the Jets come into town the Raiders seem to play well.

Indianapolis looks good this year. They could be the favorite in the AFC. The actually have a defense which they haven't had in a few years.

Well the Giants got embarassed by the Falcons. Its just seems like the Giants play when they want to. This was a brutal loss for them. To lose to the Falcons of all teams.

The Jets won. Santana Moss is the man. I don't think they are going to make the playoffs. There are rumors floating around about Terell Owens signing with the Jets next year. Adding Terell should only help them. I hate to say it but is time for Linebacker Mo Lewis to hang it up. He was one of the best line-backers in the NFL in the decade of the 90's. His speed is really gone. Victor Hobson will be a star for the Jets at linebacker for a decade I think. The guy has shown real promise. Beating the Raiders in the black hole was a good thing for the Jets. The Raiders are always tough on the Jets. I don't know who the Jets have next week. Those games with Tennesee and Indianapolis scare me. The Jets really don't win alot of games in the RCA dome. I think when the Jets play Jacksonville its going to be tough. Leftwitch playing QB for the Jaguars is really helping that team.

Well the Colts ended the Jets bid for the playoffs this year. You know what the Colts got out of the Jets division a couple years ago I was like yes the Jets don't have to play the Colts anymore. I honestly did say that to somebody. I didn't even watch the second half of the game because in the first half the Colts offense just flat out ran over the Jets defense. It was just hard to watch. Indy Coach Tony Dungy made a couple gutsy calls that won the game for the Colts: the 4th and goal in the first half that Indy scored on and then that field goal which the punter ran in for a touchdown untouched. I can't believe the Jets defense allowed the Colts to roll up 500 plus yards of offense against them. Thats almost unheard of. Finally, just because Marvin Harrison isn't playing for the Colts doesn't mean you let Wide Reciever's Reggie Wayne and Troy Walters run wild over your defense. Reggie Wayne is as dangerous as Marvin Harrison. Reggie Wayne doesn't have big numbers because Marvin Harrison is the primary reciever in the Colts offense. If Reggie Wayne was playing for the like Philadelphia Eagles he would be an elite reciever in the NFL. Believe me I don't lose any sleep over the Colts being out of the AFC East. The next time the Jets and the Colts meet can the NFL make the game at the Giants Stadium? The Jets record in the RCA Dome is not very good over the years.

About the Giants whats to say about them. They drive all up and down the field and never score anything. The red zone offense is bad. I think Jim Fassel might be fired. He's not a bad coach but the Giants are not playing with any fire or any sense of urgency.

About the Giants its time to go in a different diirection now. Fassel has been there for 7 years now.

In regards to the Colts what are they still in the AFC East? After all they have played the Doplhins, Bills, Jets, and now I hear they are playing the Patriots next week?

Lastly, that Jets-Jaguars game today was one of the ugliest games I have ever seen. It was pretty boring to watch. At least the Jets won though. I think Jets play Tennesee next. At least that game will be at Giants Stadium and not at Tennesee.

I was watching the Raiders-Chiefs al little bit today. It was a pretty good played game. It looks like Rick Mirer has found a home with the Raiders. Mirer has been with the Seahawks, Bears, Jets, and now the Raiders. After 11 years in the NFL has he finally found an offensive system that fits his playing style.

Well the curse is still there for Indy when they play New England. I don't know why. I think Bellicheck always had good game plans in playing against the Colts.

My Giants didn't show up today. No reason to even comment about their game against the Bills. If they can get him here I want Romeo Cronnel to be the next head coach for the Giants. Either Romeo or Tom Coughlin.

Well I'd rather the Colts lose the the Patsies 38-34 on a last second stoppage during the regular season than getting blown out by them in the playoffs like they have the past with Peyton under center. Let's hope the real curse ends this year in post-season. But we need the Jets to beat the Titans tomorrow to stay tied with those bad guys. So maybe if we lose to them next week in Nashville, we can still finish ahead of them by winning the last three winnable games, and hope Tennesee loses two of three. Sounds like hard work, but it's what the Colts have to hope.

Oh lay off Keyshawn already. I wish we still had him here in New York. Everybody is trashing the guy. With the bucaneers the defense couldn't hold 4th quarter leads.Keyshawn doesn't play defense. If I were to pick players I would have Keyshawn on my team no doubt. The Jets might go after him in the offseason. I'll agree Keyshawn shouldn't have shown up John Gruden. Keyshawn made a mistake in showing up Gruden. He shouldn't done it. I hope Keyshawn learned something though.

One of the few times I can talk about the Jets this year in a real positive manner. I didn't see the game but I heard they played a pretty good game against the Titans. Pennington is the man. Team are doubling and tripling Santana Moss which leaves opportunities for the other Jet receivers to make big plays. I hope the Jets beat the Patriots and The Dolphins down the stretch. First thing is first: beat the Bills this week. Last time the Jets beat the Bills the Jets defensive lineman were in the Bills backfield all day.

And he still hasn't apologized to Marvin Harrison for comments made during the colts-Bucs Monday Night Game. That's okay. Key will have plenty of time to ponder when Marv and the Colts are in the playoffs, and he is sitting by his television watching them.

I understand Keyshawn talks alot. He can talk just as long as he performs well. Your right Santana can't do it by himself. The Jets have 2 choices: Terell Owens or Keyshawn Johnson for the 04 season. They both talk alot but whoever the Jets get as long as they perform thats all care about. Jets Coach Herman Edwards had a good relationship  with Keyshawn when Herman was the defensive back coach for the Bucs back in the 2000 season before Herman left the Bucs to become head coach with the Jets. I understand Keyshawn and Herman still talk on occasion.

I don't know what Keyshawn said to Marvin Harrison. I never even heard anything about it until 2 weeks ago.

I was bothered by that too. But Baltimore has the Ravens, which Art Modell stole out of Cleveland. Then the Browns returned as an expansion franchise. I believe these fans should get over their losses, since L.A. did, and Indy might not get another NFL team after they move out. I don't believe building a new stadium in Indy is an option for the fans, unfortunately. :(

Well even though they aren't making the playoffs this year the Jets won the "snowball' as I like to call it against the Steelers. In beating the Steelers 6-0 the Jets beat the Steelers for the first time since October 30, 1988. For the scoring at home the Jets had lost to the Steelers in 1989, 1990, 1992, 2000, and 2001.

I am looking foward to the next game against the Patriots. Is going be on Saturday night and its going to be a good game. The Jets should bring their A-Game like they did a couple weeks against Tennesee.

I think the reason why Dan Reeves got fired was because even though Vick was injured for most of the season Reeves has say in most of the personal decisions that the Falcons make. Your right Wade Philips is not a head coach. He's a decent defensive coordinator though.

I think all those teams that passed up Marvin Lewis as a head coach now feel bad. This guy is going to be a good coach. The way he turned the Bengals has been unbelieveable.

Lastly, how the heck did the Ravens lose to the Raiders yesterday?

And there are no capable NFL assistants that could turn around a losing team. Lewis was probably the last. So someone like Pittsburgh might keep there old coach (Bill Cowher, since he is a native of Pittsburgh). While Atlanta and any others that do fire the coach will test the college market for a Nick Saban or Bob Stoops.

Well despite the season being long over the Jets blew that game against the Patriots last night. You have Santana Moss so throw the ball deep. I can't believe Pennington threw 5 interceptions and yet they only lost by 5 points. Thats quite a feat. For the offseason we need a linebacker and a wide reciever and a couple of cover corners. Ray mickens and Tyrone Carter are good nickel backs not starters. The patriots aren't going to the Super Bowl. Their defense is good but their offense isn't overpowering. I'm sticking with the Colts prediction the Super Bowl for the AFC. The only way the Colts don't make it is if maybe they have to face the Patriots(go figure.) Bellicheck just has peyton Manning's number. The Colts defense doesn't really worry me as a weakness. They shut down Michael Vick completely last week. Super Bowl Prediction: Eagles vs Colts.

Teams to watch in the playoffs if you are not on your game: Vikings and out of the AFC Denver. Teams that can go down really fast in the playoffs: Chiefs, and Carolina.

Or if the Colts have to play Tennessee again. It'll be difficult for the Colts to beat the Titans 3 times in the same year. But their chances are better at home. Miami could also be trouble if they are in. You're right about the your points about KC and New England. However, even though the Pats and Belicheck have Manning's number, Tampa Bay got over their jinx in cold weather games last year. And you know what happened after the Philly game. Good teams get over their history, so it's time for the Colts to prep for New England if they do finally win their playoff game. ;D

Looks like the Colts, like myself, looked too far into the future.

Final score:
Broncos 31, Colts 17.  >:(

Leave it to the Colts to waste a golden opportunity. Now they are tied with the Titans for the divisional lead with a tough road game at Houston. Truly one of the worst showings by Hoosier teams this weekend, with the Pacers, IU, Purdue, and Colts all losing within 2 days. I hope there isn't another one next week. However, a begrudging congratulations to RocknRoll's Broncos. They deserved this game.  :-/ Now I hope they can beat the Pack.

There were a few questionable calls and non-calls but who knows if the outcome would have been different :-/ Anyway, Denver may end up right back in the RCA Dome soon for a rematch....BUT....I sure would LOVE the chance to repeat what Denver did to the Qeafs in '97...when we were also the wild-card and the qeafs won the West...go to thier house and beat them :D  I'm glad Denver won last night but sad it was against a true good sport....thanks Indy ;)

The line for Brett Favre as of a few minutes ago:

12-13 passing, 254 yds, 3 TDs

His father would have been proud  :'( :) May he rest in peace.

Go Pack!

Brett Favre--

15-17 passing, 311 yds, 4 TDs

I know I'm supposed to root for the Raiders, but they're out of the playoffs, and how can you NOT root for Favre?  :)

I shouldn't have predicted the Colts to go the super Bowl. Whenever I do that they they lose their next game as it seems. They lost Jacksonville the first time I wrote on these boards that I thought the Colts were going to the Super Bowl. I wrote the same thing a few days and the same thing happened: the Colts lost a game right after I wrote my prediction again. I'm  not writing anymore predictions for the Colts going to the Super Bowl because they'll probably lose their next game yet again.

This is the 2nd year in a row they've blown the next to last game with a chance to clinch a divisional title or playoff berth. I like a little drama once in a while. But I'd rather see the Colts play up to their potential than to make everything close. That's why it's frustrating to be a Colts fans. >:(

Super Bowl wish:
Denver Broncos

   vs

Philadelphia Eagles

Though in reality I think if Denver or Indy don't make it that far it will be the Patriots who represent the AFC....I don't see anyone beating Phiily for the top of the NFC....your thoughts??

Kordell Stewart?

Ok lets start with the Redskins Dan Snyder he's like a poor man's George Steinbrenner of the NFL. At least Steinbrenner has a few championship rings where as Dan Snyder has none. The Redskins didn't have an offensive line this year thus allowing QB Patrick Ramsey to get injured late in the season with all the beatings he took from opposing teams Defense's.

As far as the Bears are concerned Bears management should be thankful they finished 7-9. On paper that is a 4-12 team. They got 3 more wins than they should have. Juaron should have never been fired.

Finally, I'll address the Jets: 1) Get rid of the offensive coordinator. Sign Keyshawn Johnson and get Chris McAllister from the Ravens. The Jets lost too many close games this year(7 games they lost by 7 points or less.) The defensive secondary needs a total overhaul. Signing McAllister would be a good addition to the team for the Jets.

I think you're wrong about Dick Jauron. He should have been fired last year. Bill Cowher should have been fired, too. But with that Alzheimer guy Dan Rooney and the blind Pittsburgh faithful giving praise to its native son, it looks like Cowher will be head man until 2010 at least. They say he is gone by next year of the Steelers suffer another disappointment, but they only need to improve 1 game to extend his contract.

I agree Cohwer should have been fired. He's been there since 1992 or 1993? I think it was time for him to go. The Steelers went went 6-10 this year. I don't think a 7-9 record will save Cohwer's job.

As for the Bears where is the talent? You have to give the head coach something to work with. These are not the Bear teams of the mid 80's/early 90's period.

You got a point there, Tv, especially on the offensive side. Offensive coordinator John Shoup should have been fired with Jauron. But the Bears' front office is only slightly better than the dreadful Bulls' administration.

A shock heard round the world today: Joe Gibbs is coaching the Redskins again. I don't believe it but its happened. Well Dan Snyder actually did something right. I'm not a big Snyder fan.

The Giants hired Tom Coughlin. Here are some of his rules for his teams which were in the Newark Star Ledger today: In Player meeting players must sit on fold down chair and no sitting on the floor. No jewlery or sunglasses(and this was in Jacksonville.) Team members must wear suit and tie in hotels at all times. I heard some of Coughlin's interview today: he was making like the Giants were playing a game next week. Thats how serious he was.

I am not happy about my fave team-the Philadelphia EAGLES-screwing up bigtime again in the playoffs. They were ONE GAME AWAY from being in the Super Bowl. The Carolina Panthers,a team they CRUSHED in the regular season, tripped them up. I hope that owner Jeff Lurie and coach Andy Reid can shape up the Eagles to become a KILLER team like they have the PLAYERS and POTENTIAL to be! ???
