Subject: spider bites

Written By: Marian on 09/09/03 at 05:48 p.m.

:P :P :P :PSomeone told me that if you put vinegar on a spider bite when you first discover it,the vinegar will suck out the venom and it will clear up very quickly.Has anyone done this successfully?I want to know because I have my third bite in about a month and it's really gross-looking right now.The ones I had before were similarly yucky but cleared up.But i would sure loke to know how to keep it from getting like that again if I get another bite.Does anything else work?Cheers!

If I remember correctly, spiders don't actually use venom.  It's actually a complex enzyme that disolves tissue.  :P

I haven't heard of anything you can use to fix up a spider bite.  I had one many years ago that took a better part of a month to heal.

Vinegar might help the tissue heal, but it won't stop the venom working. Spider venom is really nasty stuff because it breaks down tissue. Because spiders don't have teeth they have to liquify their food and suck it up. When a spider bites you, the venom paralyses the area around the bite and starts digesting it. That's why spider bites heal badly.

I like spiders and recently allowed a cute plump female to crawl on my hand so to move her off the sidewalk.  How you  are getting so many bites is perplexing, I've never been bitten and move spiders out of the way whenever the need occurs.  Maybe you are getting skitter bites.

I've been bitten a couple of times by spiders.  Not very pleasant is it. The bites take ages to heal and they scar.

I know the surf lifesavers here always have vinegar on hand to apply to jellyfish stings.  So there might be something in the vinegar remedy.   :)

I have heard that vinegar will take the pain out, but not sure if it will help it heal.

BTW, did y'all know that vinegar is a good mosquito repellent?  The smell goes away quickly (to the human nose), but they can still smell it.  Also, you can use a Bounce sheet (regular scent) to ward off bees.  Just stick one in your pocket when you're outside and they stay away AND you smell good, too ;)

Luckily I live in a country where we have only one poisonous creature - The adder (It's a snake)
I have encountered an adder before, it was obviously more scared of me than I was of it!
Apparently, Lemongrass repels mosquitos!

:P :P :PI live in California ,in San Jose. There's a lot of trees in my yard so maybe they're coming out of the trees or bushes. As far as I know, you don't feel the bite when you get it--I didn't,and it seems most other people don't either. What's funny is there is an Action Line column in the San Jose mercurey news, and the subject of spider bites comes up every so often. It seems everyone who gets bitten by one thinks they were bitten by the brown recluse spider, but they're not native to the area. The guy who writes the column has himself been bitten by spiders and gotten a nasty reaction, and he says it's NOT a brown recluse spider. It's a real controversy around here, apparently. It seems like a San Jose area thing.Cheers!

??? ???I just thought of something--I wonder if soaking the bitten area in water as soon as you discov er it will dilute the enzyme and keep it from working--kind of like when you do that to dilute battery acid, cleaner or naything you accidentally splash on your arm(or anywhere else). And then put vinegar on it afterwards?Anyone know? ??? ???BTW,the bite I have now emptied a little--a lot of pus and plasma came out, with some blood,so now there's not as much pressure. But it's still swollen--I know that doesn't go away immediately--and it's still open. But I had edema before and my hand was swollen on the right side so you couldn't see all the bones, but now you can see all of them and it looks just as wrinkled as my left hand(the bite is about an inch below the wrist on the side).Cheers! :P

Spiders do not swarm and fly in trees, some of you may have aracnaphobia, fear of spiders.  Most spiders are sweet little critters, and wouldn't hurt a fly, well maybe a fly, but spiders are not inclined to bite and most often have too small a fangs to penetrate a human.  You are probably suffering from some other type of bug bites, like squitters or chiggers, recommend you use some cortaid.

That is true of most snakes.  They will usually only attack if they are threatened.

There are quite a few plants that repel mosquitos.  Yucca plants do too.  It's just kinda funny looking to walk around carrying one ;D

I wouldn't recommend doing this.  Soaking it may actually spread the venom.  You should wash it with soap and water, then apply an antibiotic ointment.  It sounds like it has become infected so I would recommend ice and the ointment.  Also keep it covered with a bandaid (or gauze if the bandaid won't cover.)  I used to be an EMT and we would get calls for these.

Keeps the static cling down too, right?  ;)

As a side note, I would almost say I am plagued with spiders where I live.  Several years ago we had a really warm winter and the spider infestation got so bad, I can remember waking up one day and looking out my apartment window and it was covered in large garden spiders.  I had to be carefull when opening the door as they would fall down on your head.  <shudder>  And i'm arachno-phobic!  :o

We have those tiny jumping spiders EVERYWHERE!!!  Not to mention the garden spiders, brown fuzzy spiders, and daddy longlegs (among a host of others).  I went outside the other day and sprayed all of our windows since I couldn't even open them to get some fresh air.

Funny story...I was watching the movie "Arachnophobia" one afternoon whilst in college.  During the part where they show the older couple with spiders crawling all over them, a fly landed on me.  I jumped and screamed so loud, my upstairs neighbor came running down to make sure everything was okay.  We had a good chuckle.  Then the cops showed up.  Another neighbor heard the screaming and called them because she thought someone was getting beaten up.  The cops had a good laugh, too ;D

I did read that.

A bit off topic (but similar). Friday, coming home after a long day, I leaned back on the couch and put my hands behind my head. All of sudden, I felt a pain in one of my fingers. It felt like a bee sting. Instead of putting my hand back behind my head, (smart of me  ;D) I asked DC if I had a bee in my hair. Sure enough I did. As he was trying to get it out, I thought that stupid bee was going to sting me on the head. Luckily he didn't.

The next day, my finger was fine but on Sunday, my hand was very red, very swollen, and itched like the dickens. I don't understand why there was such a delayed reaction to it. Well, today, the swelling is now down and there is a little red mark-right where I was stung. It doesn't itch as much. I have never had such a reaction to a bee sting before.

Well, sorry for going off topic but I had to share.  ;D

:o :o :oHi,Cat--no problem about your being off topic.Every time you get stung by a bee, there is a chance you'll be sensitized for the next time you get stung,so in reality no one really knows how they're going to reasct to the next one.I remember an episode of "Rescue 911"where firefighters and paramedics were rescuing a beekeeper whose truck had crashed, freeing bees all over the place. The emergency personnel who knew they were allergic had to stay away, but the ones who assumed they weren't were unpleasantly surprised to learn that they had become allergic,too--some seriously.I guess everyone need to bring an antivenom kit with them at all times just to be on the safe side. :oAnyway, the mail carrier who wrote to Dear Abby probably got tired of reaching into mailboxes ang getting a "surprise". :PCheers!

Take this as a warning.  As Marian says you can become allergic to these things.  The next time it could be a much quicker and more serious reaction.

A friend of mine has always reacted with large spots whenever she was bitten by a midge.  Then one day she was bitten and became increasingly breathless as the day went on until she ended up in hospital on a nebuliser.  She was given some antihistamines intravenously and recovered pretty quickly.  The hospital said that it was a warning and next time she would probably react more severely and more quickly so she now carries and Epi-pen to she can dose herself as soon as she notices a bite.

You guys are scaring me now. As a kid, I was sooooo afraid of bees. My fear subsided until about 6-7 years ago when I sitting on my porch minding my own business when a stupid bee stung me on the toe. That just brought my fear right back. I think it is kind of silly for me (all of 5'2") to fear something less then an inch big. But, the fear is there. Now, with what you guys are saying, that only increases the fear.

Stupid movie, 8 Legged Freaks, on tv last night, David Arquette was the hero.  These giant spiders attacked a town and BIT everyone to horrible deaths.  There was one giant tarangula evil spider who was leading the assault on the town.  Movie line, "These ain't aliens, these are big assed spiders!"  How profound.

Hmmmmmm maybe not in YOUR country !

You have obviously never ventured out just after dusk in Australia when the giant Orb spiders (maily east coast) and the huge Browns (mostly west coast) are dropping in swarms from trees and power poles and any other tall object.  I can tell you it can be a rather nasty experience getting from the car to the front door.  They hang by the hundreds just about at head height and they have the hugest stickiest webs.  And its utterly revolting when you dont have a torch and cant see them and you walk straight into a group and end up with the web all over your face and then you have to get someone to go thru your hair pulling spiders the size of golfballs out of it.

Sorry I know this has just freaked out any phobic person !  But BJ obviously lives in some spider free country if they think "most" are not inclined to bite !!

Try living in Aus where just going out to water your garden can be a life or death experience - and I speak from experience having been hospitalised several times from bites from White Tail and Red Back spiders.  I was close to death after one particular yard cleanup that resulted in multiple Redback bites.  I also recieved an infection from a Wolf Spider bite that in some cases has resulted in amputation in some people.
And I am on the West Coast so I am lucky to not have to deal with the nasty Trapdoor and Funnelwebs.  My dad has had experiences with both - losing his dogs to funnelweb bites and being grateful he himself wasnt bitten.

Littlegirl, you may have aracnaphobia, i.e. you see spiders everywhere.  I like spiders, big and small, like bugs in general even roaches don't bother me, but I usually squash them. Back to the subject, we in the U.S. have this stuff called Raid, and if you spray it around your house, no more cute little bugs.  If it's not available there, please let me know and we can arrange a shipment.

Little Girl ????????????  How patronising !  I have probably been getting bitten by spiders longer than you have been out of diapers.

Fortunately - as a well travelled mature aged woman I have a broad knowledge of the world I live in - and that would be the whole world - not just the little world that surrounds my street !!

And I certainly dont have a phobia - I was raised in poisonous snake and spider bush environments and am quite adept at dealing with both when they enter my yard or home.  I only have to walk out into my own backyard and lift a rock or plant to find several of the worlds most poisonous spiders sitting there.

Also - many people prefer not to fill their home with environmental hazards like Raid.  Most people I know simply use a broom.

Hi Marian - I cant remember anyone getting bitten in Survivor Outback - but I was only watching it irregularly (i remember the guy passing out in the campfire tho - awful).  However I do remember one of the girls in Survivor Amazon copping a nasty bite on her knee - her leg nearly doubled in size.  Not sure what kind of spider it was.  There are some lethal ones in Africa.

Yep Marian - thats exactly what you do for jellyfish stings.  Pouring vinegar on it is the other solution.  I remember trips to the beach as a kid when the two things you always had to pack were the baby oil (yes so our mother could roast us) and the bottle of vinegar.

I see a new Survivor is coming up - tho its usually televised a month or two behind the US so perhaps its already started over there.  Wonder what ocean delights will be waiting to bite them in this season !!!!!!

Hey "BrianManixGirl", I live on the west coast of Canada and you should see how big these spiders get.  The most common one looks like the pic below but just a bit darker and hairier.  I've seen them as large as 12 or 13 cm across.  I knew a girl who worked night shift at a hotel and on one hot night she left her office door, which backed into the forest behind the building, open.  We kept hearing skittering noises which we discovered were coming from these spiders.  Man alive, i'd never seen them that big before or since!  :o  Must be the warm wet climate we have here.

...and this is very similar in looks and severity to a bite I once got on the back of my left hand while camping out in a cabin.  Actually, I was bitten in the same spot the following year at the same cabin.  Both times while I was asleep.  During the 2nd episode, another guy in my cabin who also shared the same name as me was ALSO bit on the same hand as mine.  Weird coincidence, eh.  Unfortunately, while I had no physical side effects other than the nasty swelling, he had nausea, sweating, etc... so off to the hospital he went.  Boy Scouts was so much fun!  :)

this is a link to a chart of Aussie spiders.  Note - its says actual size - but thats only if you order the chart - I have one on my wall and its about double the size on your computer screen.  For example - the female mouse spider - I have a photo of one on my microwave (i dont mean the photo is on my microwave - I mean the spider was !!) - and her abdomen was the size of a golfball - and she wasnt even pregnant !

http://www.termite.com/spiders/spider-identification-chart.shtml

The trapdoors and the funnelwebs are the only ones not found in my city or state.  Thanks gawd - I would never want to encounter either - they are very aggressive.

Marian ??  Nudity ??  Survivor starts here on Monday - and as long as none of the nude ones look like Richard Hatch - I will be watching with great interest hehehehehe.

Daddy Long Legs are actually famous for the fact that they are EXTREMELY venomous.

BUT

the shape of their jaw and size of their fangs makes them unable to bite anything other than their own kind.

poor things !!

:D :D :DYes indeed, more nudity than usual, and not just the guys this time.In australia,do they put a blue or grey mask on ,um,parts that are supposed to be covered, like they do here in the US? ;)Just wondering. The latest episode they did something about the nudity--sort of.                                 Anyway, the bite on the back of my hand is almost cleared up,and i don't have any more. But people should know if they have a pimple or something similar in an unusual spot, don't try to pick at it!Put vinegar and calamine on it and see if it dries out--at least if it really is a bite,it's less likely to spread!Cheers! 8)

Hey all, me again, Mr. I love spiders...anyway, the other night, something woke me from a deep sleep (fyi, was sleeping alone) felt a faint brushing upon the side of my face, enough to awaken me.  May have been a spider or a cricket.  Anyways, I smacked myself up side the head and went back to sleep, but the culprit escaped.

Hi Marian - yep unfortunately the Survivor tapes arrive here with the prudey US pixilations already covering everything.

So ridiculous when we can see more on the streakers at the football in the middle of the day.

And Survivor is shown in the old Sex In The City 9.30pm timeslot and they never pixilated any of the full frontal nudity in that.

We have a much more sensible censorship here on TV - they seem to be more understanding of the fact that we are adults and all the kids went to bed at 8.30 so what is shown after that just has warnings for language, nudity, sex, violence etc.  Then its up to us if we are going to be offended or not.  Its so refreshing to be able to watch a movie that isnt cut to ribbons or bleeped every 30 seconds.

>:( >:(You said it.I hate when movies are bleeped or they cut the sound for swear words.I mean if it's so bad, then they shouldn't show at a time when a lot of kids might watch, although they use swears more than anyone1Cheers! :o

what generally happens here is most movies are shown at 8.30.  if there is un-necessary swearing (from memory the censor allows it if its descriptive but not if its insulting - so you can say "you have a c**t" but not "you are a c**t" ) until 9pm it gets bleeped then from 9 onwards there is no bleeping.

BUT !!

If its an aussie TV drama at 8.30 they can use the "F" word 12 times in the first 30 minutes - dont laugh - an actor from the show Secret Life of Us told me this !! - and any amount of times from 9.00 onwards.

And any talk show on after 9.30 has basically no censorship.  Thank gawd - or Russell Crowe would never get interviewed !!!  And just to prove how openminded we are here - a couple of weeks ago my fave 9.30pm Wednesday talk show host breastfed her newborn son on live TV while continuing to carry on a normal conversation with the rest of the hosts on the show.  And the network only recvd 11 complaints from the prudey folk out there !!

Back to Survivor tho - hasnt been much nudity thus far bar the first night.  Not sure how far we are behind you so dont tell me too much but this week the boy scout lady got eliminated.

And my god - dont the producers check these islands out first ?? could they not pick ones with half the population of mosquito's ??  Its revolting looking at people covered in huge welts.  It looks like an annual Chicken Pox convention !!

Here, only the Pay Channels (HBO, Cinemax, TMC, etc)can get away with full language.  Some of the later prime-time shows can use dam* or a$$.  But, never the "F" or "C" word.  I think I've heard $h!t before.

I only have free to air channels - cable isnt as prolific here as it is in the US.  And from what I have seen when at friends houses - there is nothing to incline me to waste money on it.

Marian - 3 naked men !!  We had about 40 streakers invade the footy field during a game on TV last weekend and no pixelation was needed (must have been a cold day !!!!!!!!!! ;)  ).  Even on the 6pm news they didnt blur any bits out !!  Strangely - if it had been a woman - her lower bits would have been blurred.
