I don't know, being in your 70s is definately up there in age no doubt about that.  But passing away in the early 70s is still kinda on the early side I think.  My own parents are 60 and 63 respectively, and I'd like to think they still have a good 20 to 25 years of life to them (if not more).

I consider anyone who passes away before the age of 80 as being a bit too young to go.

You knew it would happens sooner or later with all his health problems. Still, a very great loss to the country and music industry.  :'(
P.S.: The only good that will come out of this is his reunion in Heaven with his wife June Carter Cash, who died only 4 months earlier.

It was a shock to hear that both John Ritter and Johnny Cash died last night.  Both of them will be sorely missed.

Jack was the buumbling guy next door, who we all wanted to sit down at the Regal Beagal and have a drink with.  Johnny was the sound of real life.  Weather it is building a car by taking it home in a lunchbox or having a silly name like "Sue", he was always fun to listen to.

I sit here, picturing Johnny, John, and his father Tex together having a beer in Hillbilly Heaven.

Title: Hillbilly Heaven
Artist: Tex Ritter

I dreamed I was there in hillbilly heaven, Oh what a beautiful sight!

Spoken:
Last night I dreamed I went to hillbilly heaven. And you know who greeted me at the gate? The ole cowboy-philosopher himself, Will Rogers. He said to me, he said Tex, the Big Boss of the riders up here has asked me to kinda show you around. Now, over yonder are a couple of your ole compadres. My, was I glad to see them, Carson Robison and the Mississippi blue yodeler Jimmie Rodgers.

Singing:
I dreamed I was there in hillbilly heaven, Oh what a beautiful sight!

Spoken:
He introduced me to Wiley Post, and he showed me the Hall of Fame with all the gold guitars and fiddles hanging on the walls. Then he said, Tex, step over this way, there are two more of your friends I know youll want to see, theyre waitin for you. There they were standin side by side and smilin at me--Hank Williams and Johnny Horton.

Singing:
I met all the stars in hillbilly heaven, Oh what a star studded night!

Spoken:
Then I asked him who else do you expect in the next, uh, say a hundred years? He handed me a large book covered with star dust. Will called it the Big Tally Book. In it were many names and each name was branded in pure gold. I began to read some of them as I turned the pages: Red Foley, Ernest Tubb, Gene Autry, Roy Acuff, Eddy Arnold, Tennessee Ernie, Jimmy Dean, Andy Griffith, Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter

Tex Ritter? Oh, well, thats when I woke up, and I'm sorry I did, because

Singing:
I dreamed I was there in hillbilly heaven, Oh what a beautiful sight!

As Cat said above, this wasn't unexpected.  But still, it's very sad to hear something like this.  My dad played Johnny Cash's music all the time while I was growing up.  I even got to see Johnny perform with The Highway Men about 8 years ago.  He was an incredibly talented man and he will be missed.   :'( :'(

Like Warren's death earlier in the week, tragic but not ultimately unexpected...his health had been failing him for some time...

Whether you like or dislike the man's output, there's no mistaking that 'growl'...commenting on his appeal, he remarked that "I don't dance, I don't tell jokes, I don't even wear my pants too tight...but I do know a thousand songs..."

Which is the legacy he's left us with...farewell, big man...

RIP Johnny Cash, he made some truly great music  :(

I loved the simplicity of many of his songs, not least as it meant they were easy to learn to play on the guitar. I bashed out "I Walk The Line" for my youngest daughter in her bath tonight.

In a little cabaret, in a south Texas border town
Sat a boy and his guitar, and all the people came from all around
And all the girls, from there to Austin
Were slippin' out the house and puttin' jewelry in hock
To take the trip, to sit and listen
To the little dark-haired boy who played the Tennessee flat top box
And he would play...
