Subject: I know this might sound stupid, but...

Written By: Def_Trick on 10/17/03 at 10:15 a.m.

Anyone know anything I could take to lower my voice that doesn't have too many bad side effects?  I don't want to smoke because the other health risks aren't worth it, and I don't want to do steroids because I don't want to grow facial hair.  I sing in a band, and I sound so stupid because I sing like a frickin girl!  I need to straighten this up before they all secretly decide to vote me out!

Well, you can always change to singing Michael Jackson songs.

;D

yeah, but we're a rock band, and none of us particularly care for Michael.

You could start drinking a lot of dark spirits.  :)  Other than that, maybe see a voice coach to get some training on how to better use your lower register.

URL ??? ??? ???I noticed from your profile that you're a female,so I don't get what's the deal with sounding female. ???A lot of females have high voices, like Lata Mangeshkar, asha Bhosle,Bernadette peters,Pat benetar, and others.Women's voices tend to deepen as they get older,so it could happen  naturally.Cheers!

Okay, Def... I gotta field this one.

There is nothing you can do to "Safely" lower your pitch except to practice descending scales.  Even then, you may not be able to extend your range any lower. If you choose to start singing from the chest to hit those lower notes (as opposed to singing from the head with breath support from the abdomen), you will damage your vocal chords permanently .  Through age, you may find your voice lowering, but not necessarily.  Tell your band to change the key to something more conducive to your range.   :D  Have you ever experimented with the timbre of your voice?

If you're singing from your chest, you're not supporting from the abdomen.  This causes unnatural pressure on the vocal chords, especially since most people who sing from the chest tend to close the back of their throat as well.  Either way, you're going to end up hoarse.  If you are placing the tone correctly, you should feel a slight buzz coming from the area of your forehead.

OK, back to a serious reply now.

There is yet one more way to get the EFFECT that you are singing lower then you are.

When Weird Al performed "Eat It" (the parody of "Beat It" by Michael Jackson), he knew he could not even come close to hitting the notes that Michael hits.  His solution was to have the band play an octave lower then the music in the original.  This was not noticeable, and it gave the audio illusion that he was singing higher then he was.  I have been told that doing the reverse (playing an octave higher) give the same effect when trying to sound lower then you really are.

Hope that helps a bit.

They're guys, so they can pull it off.  It works with their style.  But high-voiced girls often sound wussy and girly, which isn't the effect that I want.

Well, I have a gruff deep voice, and it is kind of annoying sometimes. When I'm talking and there is a little noise, you can hardly hear me, and I can hardly hear myself.

So don't think that deep voices are the greatest thing.  :-/

...But there great for prank calls who knows what kind of trouble a younster like me can get into over the phone. ;D

I was under the impression that girls were supposed to sound like girls. (I appologize. Did you mean your voice was girlish?)

In which case, there are hormone treatments, but that's extreme. Just practice singing low. I have trouble mimicking voices that are at a very high or low register (voice impressions are my thing). I just keep practicing until I can get my voice to do it.

I doubt I helped much.  :-[
