Subject: Anyone Seen These Films?

Has anyone seen "Thirteen", "The Magdelene Sisters", "Luther", or any other art film? If you have, any reviews would be nice please?

Haven't seen Luther.  I've heard it was really good though, and that it helps to know a bit about his life because the movie moves very quickly.

I saw Dirty Pretty Things starring Audrey Tatou (Amelie).  Along with Lost in Translation it was the best film I've seen this year.  It is an excellent thriller with superb acting.

I have been wanting to see Luthor since I heard about it, but I doubt I will get a chance before it goes to DVD.

Since moving from LA to LA (Los Angeles to Lower Alabama), it is impossible to see almost any movie without driving 150+ miles.

The local theatres (both of them) show either really bad movies, or the popular ones for maybe 1-2 weeks, then they move on.  They would NEVER show a movie like those you listed, possibly because they are to imbread here to understand what the movie is actually about (either that, or the locals would confuse Martin Luthor for Martin Luthor King Jr, and bitch about it not being about him).

While I miss very little about LA, I do miss the selection of movies available.  The closest theatre I found with Luthor was in Talahhassee, almost 2 hours away.  :(

It was like that in big ol' Indy for a long time. It takes a while for art films to arrive at the art theaters because we aren't one of the top 10 markets. :(

I saw Thirteen about a month ago. I really didn't get anything out of it. Those girls were nuts though.

A friend went with our Parish Priest to see the Magdelene Sisters.  She said she would have walked out except Father wanted to stay.  She found the film very depressing and said that it made her ashamed to be Catholic.  I decided not to see it after that.

Haven't seen either of the other films mentioned.  However, this week I'm going to see "Swimming Pool"  and "Japanese Story".  I'll let you know what they're like.  Last week I saw the Spanish film "Sex and Lucia", the English film "Calendar Girls" and the Australian film "Gettin' Square" all of which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I am going to attempt to see a film from the Heartland Film Festival this weekend, which are mostly family-oriented with about one or two "positive" adult features. If I go, I'll try to recommend something for the board. :)

Seen "Luther" and enjoyed it. What little I know about the man, it seems to be a fairly accurate portrayal of both the man and his times.

And, of course, it is always a delight to see an old pro like Sir Peter Ustinov in action.

More then that, I will not say, as I want to keep this reply short.

Actually had the dates mixed up. The Festival was the weekend before last. :-[

I saw the film "Japanese Story" this evening.  I enjoyed it and had a really good cry.  My friend Donna thought it was okay but couldn't see what all the rave reviews were about.  I suppose it could be classified as a "chick flick" but it did have some spectacular scenes of outback Australia which people may find interesting.

Next film on my list to see is "Swimming Pool".
