Subject: Dead Like Me

I just recently discovered this series on Showtime, and I have to admit, it has blown me away.

For those that have not seen it. picture "Touched By An Angel", as seen by Tim Burton.

It is funny, somber, dark, and very addicting.  I caught one episode this summer, then caught 4 of them last night.  I still can't get it out of my head.

The premise is this:  Some people when they die, are "collected" by "Grim Reepers".  The idea is that if somebody dies a tragic death (accident, murder, etc), the reeper releases the soul before death, hopefully preventing them from being traumatized.

There are 2 catches though.  The reeper is not paid for this service, yet they live on as a form of undead.  This means that for support, they often result to squatting in the apartments and houses of the dead they collect.  They are also not paid, so they either need a "day job" to get by, or have to rob from those they collect.

The reepers continue to do this job until they collect a set but unknown number of souls.  Only then can they go on to the afterlife, while the last sould they collect takes over for them, taking their position as a reeper.

The show centers around "George", a petite 18 year old slacker.  She (George is short for Georgia) was a college dropout, who was killed by a toilet seat falling from the Mir space station.  All of her "co-workers" call her "Toilet Seat Girl".

THe show just finished it's first season, with a second starting in the summer (and a DVD release of the first season in Spring 2004).  If anybody has not seen this, but likes quirky dark humor, I recommend checking this out.  There is set to be a marathon on 2 January, showing the entire first season.

For you 80's music buffs, I was happily surprised to learn the music for the show is done by Stewart Copeland, from The Police.  ANd the opening theme is "Afterlife (Hell)", by the Squirrel Nut Zippers.  That alone should give you an idea of what it is like.

Great show, just skewed enough to make it interesting and funny.
Each week there's a strange death...animal rights protesters killed by a bear, skateboarders falling off things...
Even my 12 year old daughter loves it...bring on season 2.

I caught one of these shows a few months ago, think it stars Mandy Patinkin?  It was bizarre but memorable, liked the team effort of the reapers.  Thanks for advising about the shows, will try to catch some of them.

Well, it was not announced until late September that there would be a second season.  So more then likely it will start pre-production any time now, and will probably start broadcasting in June.

DLM was one of the new series of the summer, so they will most likely stick to summer for new shows, to compete with the summer reruns on the broadcast channels.  Another clue is the release of season 1 on DVD, set for May 4.  Normally, they try to time this for a month or so before the next instalment begins (Battlestar Galactica, 24, etc).

You can tell how unsure they were of being picked up for a 2nd season by how they ended the 1st season.  They pretty well wrapped up the show, so it will be interesting to see how they pick it up next year.

I for one am looking forward to January 2nd, video tapes in hand.  And I will more then likely get the DVD when it comes out next year.
