Subject: What denomination is Reverend Lovejoy?

Written By: Satish_1 on 12/30/03 at 01:26 p.m.

In the TV show "The Simpsons," does anyone know what denomination of Christianity Reverend Lovejoy and the Church of Springfield belong to? I can't remember them ever saying specifically, and I can't tell what it is from the clues they've given on the show. I know that Reverend Lovejoy isn't Catholic though, since he's got a wife, and Catholic priests aren't allowed to be married. Also, there is one episode where he gets into a fist fight with a Catholic priest over whose denomination is better.

Is there a such thing as a Christian Christian?  Maybe that's what he is...

No he couldn't be Unitarian.  One episode had grandpa get up in church and denounce Unitarians.

I like Rev. Lovejoy's wife, she's always saying something to the nature of "What about the children!!??", "Has anyone thought how this will affect the children!!??"

They could be talking about the most stupid thing, like planting a tree in Springfield city hall, and Rev. Lovejoy's wife will say, "My God, what about the children!?".

Perfect satire of the soccer mom.

Perhaps it is Non-Denominational.

I was just thinking, Reverend Lovejoy's voice sounds exactly like Al Gore's(the former US Vice President)! Anyone else notice that?

Quoting:

End Quote

I always thought the same... it's easier to point to what it can't be (Catholic, Unitarian, Jehovah's Witnesses) than to point to what church they belong to.

The only reference I remember to Lutherans in the show, is when Lisa grows the little society in the cup with her tooth.  At one point she spots a little person nailing something to a church door and points out she's created Lutherans. If it were Bart, we could deduce he'd only know that because he was taught in church, but Lisa would probably know that irregardless of her faith (being the bookworm she is)... of course that was a Halloween episode, so nothing really counts there anyways.

I've also noticed there are no representations of Jesus in the church, which I know the Catholics have no problem with, but the Lutherans do.  I don't know about the other protestant faiths though. If other protestant faiths allow images of Jesus, than that would be a quick way to narrow it down.

Again, My opinion is that it is Non-Denominational.
No offense to Mormons, but it's definately Not a Mormon Church.
You Might want to contact

Or how about Jon Arbuckle the owner of
Garfield the cat, is he Catholic or Protestant?

I wonder in the Garfield movie coming out this June, will Jon Arbuckle and Dr. Liz get married?
I sure do hope, that the Garfield episodes and specials are re-marketed.

Speaking of the Book of Mormon,
It is in the Archaic language of the KJV of 1611
Does anyone else think, the Book of Mormon should be updated like the NIV Bible?
