Subject: Pete Rose admits to betting...Hall of Fame?

Written By: 80sRocked on 01/05/04 at 09:36 p.m.

Now that he has finally admitted to betting after all this time, should he be reinstated and admitted to the HoF?

Its interesting the deadline for entering his name on the ballot is now less than a year away (next Dec.), so if it's going to happen, it needs to happen fast.

Personally, I say let him in.

Let him in...he wasn't like a spectacular player but he does have the hits record, and baseball hall of fame entry is based on numbers more than anything :P

I can't decide....he could have called a press conference to "Confess", instead he's making money from the book and the tour ::) IMO he's only now confessing because he wants something.

I say let him in the HoF.  I don't think betting on baseball should have kept him out of Cooperstown.  There are lots of players in the Hall that did much worse.  Don't let him back into baseball, though.  That should be out of the question.

Well, everybody makes mistakes.

Everybody makes mistakes, some worse than others. He's been punished enough, IMO.

More to the point, his record should be looked at objectively in its own right. A great accomplishment is a great accomplishment regardless of personal issues.

I agree.  He should be in the Hall of Fame but that's it.

Never, never, never.  This guy, by betting on baseball games he had inside knowledge of and that he had control over, struck at the very heart of the game.  He betrayed the integrity of baseball, and there is NOTHING worse an athlete can do.
Rose should remain banned from baseball, banned from the HOF.  Letting him within whiffing distance of professional baseball would be like giving someone who'd sold information to the Taliban a Congressional Medal of Honor, or an arsonist a Firefighter of the Year award.  Let him rot.

The guy stole money, in essence, from the till.  He also lied and tried to cover up.  No H.O.F. for him if you ask me.  >:(

If he gets it, they've reduced the respectability of the sport even more.

Rose sees nothing wrong with gambling

The fact that he's so arrogant and defiant about his gambling makes me think that he really doesn't deserve any sympathy.

They never let any of the Black Sox into the Hall of Fame, right?  Historically it seems like the Black Sox were better players than Rose, even if they were from a wholy different era and they threw a World Series.  Maybe it's not such a good idea to let Rose in after all.

You make a good point, Rice.  His attitude about the whole thing stinks.  As much as I hate to say it, maybe he shouldn't be in the HOF.

as much as Id like to see Pete Rose in, maybe he should be more noted for not being in, and missing his opitunity by breaking an offical rule...like Joe Jackson and Eddie Ciotti, and Buck Weaver...after all, he did break the rules...he should take his punishment like a man...

permanently ineligible

He's been punished.

On Pete Rose's reinstating issue -

He probably should never and will never be reinstated to manage. I wouldn't reinstate him because chances are that by being placed in a position of test and temptation, he would cave in. He would cave in because of his lack of self control, which would plausibly cause him to break the rules again. That's probably why the idea will no longer, IMO, merit serious thought.

Gambling at the race tracks and casinos is not illegal and he has the right to do whatever he likes in his free time. I don't have a negative opinion about his favorite pastime. I'm not against legal gambling.

However, if he is a gambling addict, he definitely shouldn't be given responsibilities in areas of temptation.

On the question of whether or not he should be admitted into the Hall of Fame -

I think it's a shame he will probably not be admitted into the Hall of Fame because his merits should be recognized regardless of his personal issues, as I stated before.

He should be at Wrestlemania 20 to get chokeslammed by Kane once again. ;D

Pete Rose has an ADDICTION to gambling, and it's an ILLNESS that clouds all rational thoughts of the compulsive gambler. If Pete Rose was not an ADDICT, he would not have been DESPERATE enough to bet on his own team. I say let him into the HoF,but don't let him return to baseball. It would be too much temptation for him to start gambling again!
