Subject: Steve Waugh retires

I feel that, as counterpoint to the recent Steve Irwin stunt, it's  a good time to pay homage to a more suitable Australian role model.

He may have been the architect of many a humiliating England defeat over the last 18 years but I take my hat off to a truly great sportsman at the end of his international career!

Now you're talking maddog !  A much better representative of our country. ;)

Thanks for your lovely comments. Although I'm not much of a cricket fan, I have to say that Steve Waugh truly has proven time and again just what a great sportsman he is, both on and off the field. :)

I particularly liked the bit in the article about "monstrous snakes made from hundreds of empties being held up for admiration...."

- sounds like a great day on the Hill!

Did the ECB pay him off?

If so, could they 'retire' the rest of the Aus squad?!!

Certainly a fine player...one of the greats...

Yep !  Here is an anglo-Australian thread in the making if ever you saw one !

Thanks for your comments, Paul and Maddog.

We are replacing him with Ricky Ponting, who averaged 100+ in test last calendar year.  Just thought I would mention that  ;D

There will be a prize for any of our American friends who can post here with an insightful comment on the prospects of the England cricket team in the next Ashes series...;)

It's always a bit sad to see a great sportsman retire.  Also makes me feel very old!

Just imagine if the Poms took home the Ashes - there would be knighthoods all round for the boys! ;)

It would be like Johnny Wilkinson, but hundred times more over the top.

Oi, Jonny Wilkinson OBE if you don't mind  ::)

Anyway, I shan't worry about any over the top reaction to an England Ashes victory just yet....I would have settled for a series win over Sri Lanka!

Oooooooooo. He's an OBE! An OBE. And all he had to do was kick a ball over a goalpost.  :)

Yeah, OBEs for Jonny and Martin Johnson, Clive Woodward is now Sir Clive Woodward. MBEs from pretty much everybody else involved.

I say recognition is fine but why perpetuate this idea that Britain still has an empire? It's the sort of backward looking anachronistic jingoism that really frustrates me.
