Subject: Weight Loss Methods

LOW CARBS Thats all you hear about nowadays any one trying it and having success? How about people who get their stomachs stapled....YUCK!Randy Jackson from American Idol did it and lost 100 pounds....but is it worth it?He was complaining on some show how if he its the smallest thing he either throws up or gets the "runs".I prefer just doing it the hard way by working out.

All I do is cut back on how much I eat and ride my bike 5 miles a day.  It works...I have lost 30 lbs since April.

For me, I lost a lot of weight (about 200 pounds) by cutting back on what I ate. I also don't eat any fried foods whatsoever. I walk every day and do some form of aerobics a couple of times a week. I also lift (not very heavy) weights to strengthen my muscles.

To me, Atkins is just another fad diet that won't work in the long run.

And don't even get me started on stomach stapling or whatever it is called. :P

Congrats, Lurker Jess!   8)

In my opinion (and experience) you have to cut back what you eat (to a reasonable level, not starvation), PLUS you gotta have exercise like walking and the weights.

Walking burns off calories and strengthens/conditions your heart.  Weight lifting builds muscle mass which increases your caloric burn rate.

My experience in the above has been to lose 15 pounds or so.  I've been able to lose about one pound per week following a moderate exercise program, with reduced (but not starvation) calories.

Stomach Stapling is major surgery and it has risks.  I remember an episode of "Ed" where for one kid it worked well, but another kid bit the dust due to complications.  It did work well, however, for Carnie Wilson.

Atkins is another gimmick.  In the end you still have to eat fewer calories.  And if you eat NO CARBS, you will get a condition known as "ketosis" in which your breath will smell like acetone.  Nice.

The body needs carbs.

Deleting or significantly lowering carbs from your diet is not the healthiest solution.

Consuming tons of protein is not healthy either.

The answer lies in moderation. Eat reasonably portioned foods from all of the food groups, minus the unnecessary fats and sugars.

Any kind of exercise, whether it is walking, jumping on a trampoline, riding a bike....

Any exercise for just 30 minutes a day, three days a week works wonders!!

Do that and eat sensibly. That's the best way.

Like some, I firmly believe the Atkins diet is just another diet fad that will pass, just like the Cabbage Soup diet passed right on by and was left behind as one of the very many 80's fad diets.

Don't have the option of avoiding the carbs fad, I'm diabetic (type 2). Carbs turn into glucose too quickly, I have to watch them, it's odd that the trend is on carb avoidance almost at the same time I was told I was diabetic, maybe it was a sign..
I eat a lot of protein & fiber, keeping fat intake low..the only carbs I get is from breads or cereals, and even then it needs to be bread w/o white flour..
But by following a low carb/high protein and fiber diet, with about 30 mins of exercise, I've lost about 30 pounds since last August..didn't really try that hard, the weight just came off..thinest I've ever been in my life, even lighter than I was in high school!

I did the low carb diet and lost 45 pounds in 2 months on it.  And the low carb diet isnt unhealthy unless you go to far with it, if you follow it like your supposed to it can accutally lower your cholesterol and lower your chances for diabeties.  And also it isnt a passing fad because the Atkins diet has been around for a long time, my mother has a low carb diet book at home from the 70s when she was on the diet when she was younger.

The Atkins diet was published in the 70's, but everyone sorta laughed at him at the time and ignored the plan. Personally, I don't think it's a very good plan, but wow. The bread industry is begining to feel the pain from the diet and even Subway has created "Atkins Wraps" to keep up business.
