Subject: My Cat Was Put To Sleep Today

Written By: Indy Gent on 02/03/04 at 09:15 a.m.

I regret to inform you that my cat Clarence was finally put down this morning after a lengthy illness. I was hoping he would make it through 20, but he barely moved when I got home and his condition got worse from there. He was 18. I still can't believe it. I'll miss him. I thank you all for the kind words and love you gave about him. He is in a better place now. :'( :'( :'(

I'm sorry.

I hope you can begin to take comfort knowing that he isn't suffering anymore and that you are a compassionate person for having to make such a heart-wrenching decision.

I hope you are ok.

I'm so sorry Indy. I know how hard it is. I had to put a cat to sleep and it really is the hardest decision in the world. Just know that you gave Clarence 18 years of love and companionship and you made the right decision. He is not suffering any more. I also just lost an 18 year old cat in Sept. I was grateful that she died at home and I didn't have to make that decision again (but the subject was talked about). My advice is in a week or two, go to the Humane Society and adopt another cat who needs a home. Not to replace Clarence-he can NEVER be replaced, but to help fill that void in your heart. Giving love to another is one way to heal a broken heart.

I am very sorry to hear that.  I am sure it took everything you had to do it. I have a dog who is almost 12 now and I know that it wont be a whole lot longer, maybe a few more years, before we have to put him down too and that thought scares me. So, I can't imagine what that would have been like for you.

Actually, I owe part of that to my sister, who owned Clarence the first few years of his life, and still gave me some advice as to feeding and maintaining him. I couldn't have done it without her.

:'(Sorry to hear that Clarence was put to sleep. I had the same situation about four years ago when I had to have my beloved feline pal of 14 years,Sylvester, put to sleep because he developed an illness that older cats sometimes develop. His thyroid completely shut down on top of the FUS he battled for years. It is hard to lose a longtime pet companion, when Sylvester passed on I had a breakdown. Indy,it's hard now,but Clarence is in a better place where he is at peace and suffering no more. It would be really great if you could adopt another cat or kitten,it will heal your sadness. By the way, my cat, Tika, sends her love, meows, and paw hugs to comfort you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat.  :'(

This month is actually the eighth year anniversary of my cat's passing. She had to be put to sleep as well. She was 16 1/2 and in very poor health.

This past September, one of our Guinea Pigs suffered a stroke and had to be put to sleep as well because he couldn't even stand up anymore. We still miss him. :'(

I hope your fond memories of Clarence will help you through your time of sadness. He had a long, wonderful life with someone who loved him very much...and I'm sure he's very appreciative of that. Remember that he loved you too, and is looking down at you and purring. :)

Indy,
I am so sorry to hear about Clarence.  I know how attached I am to the little "furballs" that I have.  I say "furballs" affectionately.  It is never easy giving up a pet.  They love you unconditionally.  It seems they have a 6th sense about how we are feeling and know just what to do to offer comfort.

I dread the day when I have to say good-bye to my Gracie Lou and Mercy Mae.  I don't know what I'd do without them.

On May 20, 2000, I had to give away three cats.  We had had them all since they were born.  We even had Christmas ornaments for them.  Now, every year when I take out their ornaments, I think about all the good times we had.  Gracie and Mercy remind me so much of them, but they will never be them.

Sorry to ramble, but I understand your loss.  You'll be in my thoughts.

I have to do the same thing. When I had to put Bear to sleep back in 1997, I had him cremated and didn't know what to do with the ashes. So I left them at the Vet. Then when I lost Sheena in 2001, I did the same thing. Now, the vet also has Brandy's ashes. They have been calling so I guess they want me to come pick up all three. I still don't know what to do with them.

When Pepé Le Peu, one of our Guinea Pigs, was put to sleep, we had him cremated and laid to rest in their cemetery. We didn't really want to bring the ashes home because that just seemed too morbid for us. We have pictures of him, and fond memories...and we know he's resting comfortably and is happy now. :)

I found this thread just as the one year anniversary of my having to put my cat to sleep approaches. Mittens was just over 16 years old, born on Valentine's Day, 1987. From the time we brought her home she had adopted me- not the other way around. She was a one person cat and I was fortunate enough to be that person. (It was kinda funny how she pretty much hated everyone else in the house-including my parents who got up at 5am to feed her every single day!!) She eventually developed a heart murmur, and what finally took her was a tumor in her abdomen. We were told that she wouldn't have survived the surgery because of her heart and her age. I was with her when we put her down, and a week later I brought her ashes home with me. I wasn't going to do that at first, but after the last series of tests we had to put her through, I promised her that I would NEVER leave her at the vet again.  Anyway, after we put her down, a friend of mine sent me a link for a really great website to help owners deal with their loss:

http://www.bestfriends.org/memorials/index.htm

it's a site where you can post a memorial for your pet, as well as read other's memorials too. Hope this helps you a little

No. The vet was very good. It was the vet I had before her that was subpar, and was never sure if my cat was even sick. By the time I changed doctors, it was too late to do much of anything but make the cat comfortable. So the decision to cremate him came at my sister's request, because she had him before I did and the staff knew her better than me.
Just noticed the smilie. ;)

My deepest sympathies go out to you Indy. I had a pet cat named Curley for 14 and half years. We had to have him put to sleep in January of 2001 because he contracted a bad thyroid condition. We couldn't afford to pay for the corrective surgery for his disease, and it would have pro-longed his life only by a few more years. He was getting thinner, and more unhealthy looking, and he was also getting forgetful and destructive (he started wrecking furniture, and pooping on the floor, two things he NEVER did as a younger, healthier cat). So, we decided that putting him down was our only option to work with.Rest in peace,Clarence and Curley. :'(   Sincerely,Steve

Pets can make a tremendous impact on our lives, but I think cats make more impact then dogs do.

I had a Cat named "Punkin" when I was little.  My mom rescued him as an abandoned kitten in 1972.  I remember holding him in my hands (I was 7) and he was so small, but he sure did not stay small for long.

We already had 2 dogs at this time, and very quickly, Punkin showed them who was boss.  Once they got used to each other, it amazed people who came over to see 2 meduim sized dogs sleeping in a pile with our cat.  And once he grew, it amazed them even more how BIG this cat got!

When he was 3, I remember our vet commenting that he was "one of the biggest domestic cats he had ever seen".  He must have weighed over 25 lbs, and being a Persian made the illusion that he was even bigger then this considerable size.  And none of it was fat.  Being an indoor-outdoor cat, he spent most of the daytime outside.  And when he wanted in, he let us know.  He would climb half-way up the screen door (remember those old wooden ones?  no hydrolics holding them closed, just a spring) and move his weight back and forth, causing it to bang open and closed.  It sounded just like somebody banging on the door.

When Punkin had to go to the vet, I was the only one that could hold him.  He was decidedly *MY* cat, and nobody else could keep him calm.  I remember him being a big armload, and a real tiger when my parents tried to take him, but in my arms he would calm down and let the vet examine him.

I lost my dogs with 2 days of each other in 1981, by I still had my cat.  I do not know what I would have done if I had lost him at the time.  Even at 9 years old, he would hunt and catch full grown squirrels.  He had yet to show any real signs of slowing down.  And he was still a terror to all of the small and medium sized dogs in the neighborhood.  I joined the Marines in 1983, and had to leave my Cat.

I remember in 1985 going home, and there was Punkin.  My mom had run over him the year before, breaking his rear hip.  She heard his scream, and when she ran out of the car, he was already gone.  She called and told me this, and we were both sure he had gone off someplace to die.

But lo and behold, a week later he came limping home, thinner and with a crooked rear hip, but very much alive.  In addition to being big, he was also one of the toughest cats I have ever heard of.

I was in Japan in 1990, when it became obvious that he was out of time.  My mom could not bear to take him to the vet herself, so she had my niece take him in.  I met the vet several years later, and he still remembered Punkin.  When she gave him the shot, her 9 year old son was holding him.  This 18 year old cat, who was in great pain actually closed his eyes and purred.  I like to imagine him thinking it was me all those long years ago.  This cat was so noble, and even the vet told me she cried a bit when he fell asleep.

I have had several cats in the years since then, but none of them ever touched my heart like Punkin did.

My sister is a little bit more of an extrovert when her pets die, because she is always around them. I am truly sorry for the hamster, Forrest. A loss of an animal, no matter what it is, is very sad.
