Subject: Primaries

Written By: QueenAmenRa on 02/03/04 at 01:40 p.m.

As if anybody cares, the Oklahoma primary election is today.  Unfortunately I'm not registered to vote.  You know something, there was I guess a Democratic debate at my college last week and guess who showed up? Friggin LIEBERMAN and that's IT!  Yeah there's one reason we're a "Republican" state....although I think Kerry and Clark are popular with the military people here...

Can't have much of a debate with one person, eh? So Clark won Oklahoma by a squeeker I hear.

I'm casting my vote for Clark. He is a military man who understands why the Iraq war was wrong, has a good plan for getting our Troops out, and has good ideas about domestic issues.

Sure he says it is wrong now.  Just like Kerry, they have both flip-flopped on their stance on the war, now that they are looking for votes.

Here's a little tatse of Clark's so-called "opposition" to the war, all said last April:

"The operation in Iraq will also serve as a launching pad for further diplomatic overtures, pressures and even military actions against others in the region who have supported terrorism..."

"Can anything be more moving than the joyous throngs swarming the streets of Baghdad?"

"President Bush and Tony Blair should be proud of their resolve in the face of so much doubt".

Interesting choice of words from somoene who "opposed" the war.  Gee, one would think there's an election coming up or something. ::)

Uh....if "domestic issues" is what I think it means...I wouldn't call those "good" ideas at all.

Valid points from both. I will investigate further, thank you.

Edit:QUEENAMENRA : Just wondering what of the ideas you don't think are good so I can reply more educated ?

Wow her'es another great example of how 'free' we are in America. I have never voted in a Primary (wether that be out of sheer stupidity, not really being an issue, not understanding what primary's were or all of the above) and have after 2 years of being apolitical activist been tought the importance. Especially for this election.

Well lo and behold I found out I can't vote in the primarys because I am registered as 'no affiliation' meaning I can vote for anyone.

Well apparently not. Since the PA primary's are 'closed' I cannot vote unless I am registered as a Dem or a Rep. Repeat my right to vote has been restricted just because I don't choose affiliation.

Yup, that's how free America is. I looked thru the number of states that have this 'closed' style primary and it's staggering.

the problem with letting people with no affiliation vote in the primaries is that it would be possible for many republicans to temporarily become independent and then use their votes to secure the democratic nomination for a candidate who would have no chance against president bush

We have open primaries. You can vote in any primary you want but ONLY ONE. When you go in, they will ask you which one you want. The only one I have heard complain about our open primaries was this guy who come from another state who wanted to challenge our sitting senator. This old retired farmer decided to run against him. The old retired farmer won by a landslide.  ;D Then, he endorced our sitting senator. Who says politics isn't funny? You should have heard the debates for both the primary AND the election. We were just laughing our @sses off.

Why would Republicans waste their vote on someone not in their party? Should I take this to mean that the Republicans are running no cantidate to oppose Bush?

I admit I have a great deal of ignorance as to how the voting system works. In latter years I had just reconciled myself to believing it's all BS , someone's already made the choice, so why bother?

It took an avtivist friend of mine to point out that there's very much a chance I could be correct. That dropping that little piece of paper or flicking that switch doesn't matter and that it's all fixed. But he then pointed out to me : Is it too much trouble to cast that vote anyway just in case it's not fixed?

Kinda sobering point.
