What you think of this decade?

In my opinion -

It's too early in the decade to tell, my friend; mainly because this still feels to me like the late 1990's; more of the same.

I think I'll have more of an opinion after 2005.

Ok. I feel very pessimistic thus far. Not a whole lot of positives, from what I can tell.

I think it's quite possibly the beginnings of a new era of fascism.

Why are you that way may I ask?

I've read many of your posts, and you are always pessimistic about the present, you rarely want to see all the good around you in the here and now.  You just focus on the negative.  And many others are just like you, they continue to rant about the negative and how utterly miserable the 90's and 00's are/were.  Then you guys go on and on about how high and mighty and completly moralistic and super-perfect the 80's were.  I'm old enough to have been around for the 80's, so I remember how it really was.  Some people go as far as completely rewriting history and never tell the younger generation that human beings basically acted like human beings back in the 80's.  Humanity did not descend into some great underworld of evil in the past 14-15 years.

sigh.

I think the answer to my query probably lies in the fact that I'm still a single guy with no kids and still in my 20's.  Perhaps if I were older, or had a family to take care of, I would naturally become more uptight and over-touchy about everything in the current pop culture.  Maybey if I had a kid, I would say, "but what about the children!!?" when Janet Jackson's breast was shown, instead of "Wow!  That's a hilarious stunt."

(The day that happens, and I start acting the way I remember my parents used to back in the 80's and 90's is the day I know I've officially gotten too old to qualify as "young")

It's not something I'm looking forward too...  :-/

Wow. That reads like the sound of frustration.

I never stated this or any statement to reflect this sentiment:

about how high and mighty and completly moralistic and super-perfect the 80's were.

I simply rave about how cool the 80's were in reference to music, styles and fashion. Oh and how awesome the arcades were. ;D :D 8)

As the intelligent person that I am, I have the capacity and the perfect right to formulate my own opinions on how I see the world and how I see yesterday, today and (in the future) this decade.

I'm pessimistic because I think things in general today, for this planet, this nation (US), music, artists, style and fashion have gone down hill and have certainly not improved any since the 80's and there are absolutely no signs of improvement on the horizon.

In music alone, there are very few if any original songs with original music out there. That's just one example.

I'm not looking at the 1980's with rose-colored glasses. In terms of fads, music, styles and fashion, the 80's were absolutely diverse and awesomely cool.

So far on a global scale, I haven't seen the whole world so shook up. Ten years ago, I would never be able to comprehend 9/11, The War on Terrorism and, oh yes, MP3 Players  ;D.

The last time I felt such a time was 1989 when The Berlin Wall fell and that was crazy back then.

However, on a personal scale, my life has never been better out of this decade. I still like to relive my childhood in the 80s section and moan about how crap music is today - Oh and Chris, I'm 24 years old  ;).

Not all music & TV is bad in the 2000's.

What about The Sounds, The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Audioslave (Soundgarden/Rage Against The Machine power group), and the popularity of Outkast & Fountains Of Wayne.

And television...
Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" line up.  :D

Absolutely. Apart from the 'Reality TV' fad (We're approaching the end of 'I'm a celebrity get me out of here in Britain - Yawn!), I think TV is great in the 2000s. Especially for the lack of political correctness in sitcoms like Gimme Gimme Gimme, The Royle Family (sitcom?), The Office and Phoenix Nights.

yep there are some good shows for sure

Bernie Mac
Smallville
Joan of Arcadia
One Tree Hill(love the messed up family thing, plus ive got a huge crush on Bethany Joy-Lenz and Sophia Bush)
Most Extreme Challenge(just the funniest challenges and commentary)

but mostly i still watch shows from my school days that have been picked up by cable networks like Sister Sister Family Matters Full House and such.

i still dont get how all these game shows like survivor, the weakest link, american idol, got labelled "reality series". i mean that kid who threw the water @ simon on AI, i bet he doesn't do it if he doesnt know it might end up on TV.

anyways im sure this decade is going to be interesting for me, going from 10th grade to the otherside of my 20s..oh im dreading that day. I remember  in 02 when i was talking to my sister, she was like "im so old, im gonna be 25 later this year". A few weeks ago it didn't help when these kids on my block, riding by on their skooters, shouted out "hey mister!". Kinda flattering, but also..grrr..im still 19!(for 7 more weeks...* :'( *what happened to my teen years man!? i thought they went on forever!)

I know this post is from many moons ago...but I never did respond to this...

My WHOLE point is that you are almost always negative about the way the world is today.  I myself have certain issues with current politics, the economy, and the handling of foreign affairs.  But I'm not talking about that, I'm talking more people vs. people, and this whole "we have less morals and decency today" thing that you like to always trot out.  I don't feel that the world is that bad, I don't think that people are that bad and that society is going down the drain.  At least, not anymore then it was in the 80's.  I don't think we're living in Sodom or Gomorrah.  I don't think we can judge the present humanity as being magically more corrupt and evil by what the FCC or the MPAA allowed to be aired on TV or local cinemas 15 or 20 years ago.

Those are your opinions on current pop culture.  I think there's a lot of good stuff out there.  I LOVE the 80's, I grew up in the 80's, but I have no desire to constantly live in the 80's.  Yeah, I'll admit that the 2000's seem to be "the 90's Part II" from a pop culture standpoint.  But those are your opinions to write off the 90's and 00's as being less then the 80's.  Don't you remember what the 30 and 40 something "adults" said about the 80's back in the actual 1980's?  And remember how they wouldn't shut up about the 50's and 60's?

I've been on these boards on and off long enough to say that yes you do look at the 80's through rose colored glasses.  And in one aspect, that isn't always a bad thing.  I myself like to remember the good things rather then the bad.  But a lot of times you just rewrite history, and you're not alone.

Quoting:

My last statements, if I remember them, yes had to do with more myself.  I'm now in my late 20's, and I guess I'm going through usual issues of lost youth.  I'm getting older, and I do not want, nor do I like sounding like my teachers and parents from the 80's, that said many of the same things you are saying right now and have said before.  Come on Hairspray, you're smart enough to know exactly what I'm talking about.  My God, who wants to start sounding like your parents and teachers?  But back in 1986, 1987, and 1988, they were pessimistic about that time, and longed for what they felt was the more innocent and carefree 50's and 60's.  They wouldn't shut up about the 50's and 60's.  I like to look at the good in the present, and I admit that I do tend to want to remember the better things from the past.  Don't we all?  But glossing over the past as some remarkable and less problamtic time has always baffeled me.

BUT I think, as I get older, that I am beginning to understand the whole rewriting history for the benefit of kids.  I think I'll start a post on that topic.
