Subject: Fountains of Wayne as best NEW artist????

Written By: Satish_1 on 02/06/04 at 06:05 p.m.

The band Fountains of Wayne are nominated at this year's Grammys for Best New Artist. What I don't understand is how they can be nominated for best NEW artist; I can remember hearing songs of their's like "Radiation Vibe" and "Sink to the Bottom" on the radio more than SEVEN years ago! How can a band that's almost a decade old be considered NEW?

From the Grammy website:  "Best New Artist--(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)"

I guess that makes Fountains of Wayne "new" according to them.  Not that I agree with that; I'm just getting information from the "experts!"  :)

yea, the grammies should consider changin the best new artist to breakout artist of the year..that would fit the category better.

And Evanescence was nominated for Best New Artist even though they released an album a couple of years ago as a Christian artist. So my understanding is that if someone like Jaci Valasquez has a new release go platinum, even though she released several CDs as a Chrstian artist, she's eligible for Best New Artist? That doesn't make sense.

It's O.K with me, I gave up respecting the Grammy’s and their choices for best song, artists, or record long ago when they picked Jethro Tull as best metal act over Metalica years ago..

Sorry but I feel the Grammy’s are nothing more than a sales and promotion contest. The choices are made on the billboard/sales charts, and radio airplay, all things that are completely manipulated by the music labels themselves.

Huge media outlets like WEA, Polydor (PGD), BMG or Sony/Columbia, use every trick in the book, "jukeing" the sales numbers/pre-order forecasts, cd promos to the "right people" (as payola to radio jocks) and unfair/monopolistic pricing schedules to get their artists music purchased, played or heard, then pat themselves on the back with a Grammy and use the Grammy award or nomination to further their sales goals ::)..its no wonder the independent label or artist, that dosen't "play the game" gets squeezed out of the running.

I've grown too tired of talented and disserving artists & bands be looked over or not even considered by the Grammy’s to even need to get upset over their choices anymore...

I just want them to win.

Or, barring that, I want 50 Cent to lose.
