Subject: Why a big stink about disabled folks marrying?

Written By: Tony S N Jr Fan on 02/10/04 at 09:33 p.m.

Why is there STILL a concern about developmentally disABLED people marrying? Is it that so-called "educated" people worrying about these folks being "inferior" parents? Is it that society's attitude is'oh it's just puppy love'between these 'special'people? I know of a developmentally challenged couple who have been married for awhile and have raised a child-a very INTELLIGENT child-with a little help from a caseworker. It angers me that some people STILL think that those who are "incompetent" in certain people's minds should not fall in love!

As far as I am concerned, there shouldn't be a big stink. If two people (regardless of their condition) love each other, they should be allowed to lead a normal life.

I did see a TV programme regarding this and the major problem was when the parents thought the social worker was interfering in their lives.

I agree with Bobby.  There shouldn't be any problem with it.  As long as they are capable of taking care of themselves, and whoever else may come along, people should be supportive of them.  They're no different than any other 2 people who love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together.

For those who are interested in this subject there is a great movie starring Juliette Lewis called "The Other Sister" that deals with this issue.

A lot of people have a disability or are somewhat disabled, it isn't always obvious, look at JFK, people didn't know he was disabled, their are different types and levels of Disability.
I just hope to be with "Pam" in the Afterlife, I want her to see the Real me. Please God.

Part of me thinks Marriage is overated, that it isn't all that, I mean most married people get divorced, and alot of men and women are happy being single and unmarried.

I'm not developmentally disabled or whatever you want to call it, but I'm physically disabled and married to a great person, and I think people are amazed. It's like it's something that's not supposed to happen. We get looked at all the time. Here's a little story:

One day, we were going to the bank and saw someone walking down the ramp instead of using the stairs. We hate that. We followed behind him, my hubby pushing my wheelchair, and accidentally bumped into him. He didn't like this too much, and my hubby basically told him (with an obscenity or two) that he shouldn't have been walking on the ramp. I would have spoken up but I was in complete shock! The point of this story is, this guy never gave any thought to the fact that maybe he and I were at the very least friends. He said to my hubby: "I assume you're part of some organisation or something?" to which my hubby answered, "No, she's my wife!" The guy walked off and started furiously writing while looking at us. I think he was going to report us to security for whatever reason. Nothing ever happened because of it. But it's the sheer ignorance of people like that that makes me ill. Disabled people are just like everyone else, and are entitled to have the same feelings, wants and needs.

I already am married... ??? And what do you mean, "Just as long as you can get up?" What, from my wheelchair? No chance of that happening, I'm afraid...

What really ticks me off is able-bodied people who use HANDICAPPED Parking spaces just so they can save themselves a few steps! How downright LAZY and absolutely RUDE!

I report people who don't have handicapped parking signs on their cars to the appropriate authorities, or go after the offending person themselves if I see them!  >:(

You know what, though, my mother has one of those and I've dropped her off at the door if we're running late and gone to park in the handicapped spots because she'll be walking back to the car and cops have stopped me and questioned me for it.  I have to agree, though, cases like this are few and far between.  I have reported a few people who are obviously abusing them.
