Subject: Anyone else upset with Viacom/MTV Network?

Written By: onaree on 03/10/04 at 05:52 a.m.

We are on the Dish Network system.  Well, yesterday morning I got up and turned on the tv only to find Comedy Central, MTV, MTV 2, VH-1, Nick East, Nick West, and BET GONE!  Now what am I supposed to do?  These were some of my favorite channels.

Granted, Dish Network said it's because their contract with Viacom was up and Viacom wanted to charge an outrageous amount for them to renew.  Dish Network didn't agree with this.  Well, I already pay $50+ per month for my satellite package.  I'm glad that Dish Network is holding out, but still.  How am I supposed to watch Nick @ Nite?  I just hope they don't take TV Land too.

Anybody else aggravated over this?

Good old-fashioned broadcast TV is sounding better all the time.  Now if I could only find that old rabbit-ear antenna.   :-/

My parents have Dish also.  They lost one of their local channels as well.  My brother is ticked off.  I guess there's a campaign online to basically bombard them with emails so they pull their heads out and get back to business.  We don't have satellite because it's too windy in our immediate area and the satellite constantly loses the feed.  My neighbor even bought some bracket that was supposed to help, but it didn't. ::)

Not really. We have Dish Network, but I don't watch tv all that much. The only shows I will miss (because I sorta watched them when I remembered to) are The Fairly OddParents on Nickelodeon and South Park on Comedy Central.

By the way, I read in the paper that Dish Network is going to credit people $1 a month for every channel they lost.

I read that too.  In my paper, it also said that the increase was only 6 cents per channel.  Sounds like DishNetwork is going to lose money on this one ::)

They made it sound like it was an outrageous amount that they were going to have to increase it.  This is highly aggravating.  I really miss watching Full House in the mornings.  Isn't that terrible.  I'm almost 30 years old and love watching this show.   :-[

I knew it was a good idea to get DirecTV. :)

If I were a DishTV subscriber, I would be royally ticked.  Hopefully enough of them will realise how much they are being screwed and do something about it.

I don't see how Dish Network customers are getting screwed. So we've lost 10 channels for awhile. Big deal. I think it's quite generous of Dish Network to pay $1 a channel until the dispute ends. Of course by paying out that much money, you can be darned sure they're going to resolve the Viacom issue as quickly as possible. ;D

And this is just my opinion...I think DirecTV isn't that great. I've seen how much DirecTV charges for all their channels and it's not pretty. My familys pays about $30 less for more channels than DirecTV offers.

I heard it was $1 total, not $1 per channel, but maybe I misheard....

Dish Network subscribers are exactly who is getting screwed.

Why is it that all the cable companies, and DirecTV aren't having problems with Viacom?  Its because Dish Network wants more money from Viacom, and look who has to suffer...the customers.

Incorrect. Dish pays Viacom to include them in the Dish Network, and in turn, Dish customers pay Dish, so ultimately, customers pay Viacom and Dish gets however much more they charge then what the channels ask for for profit. Viacom is "overcharging" Dish, according to Dish. Dish has two choices: 1) Drop Viacom channels and keep a lower price for subscribers, or 2) Pay the money for Viacom and end up adding to the price for subscription.

In the end, those who don't use CBS/MTV/Nick/etc. won't be upset, and will actually be pleased with the fact that they're paying less money now that channels they never watch are off-air.

But what about those subscribers who do watch those channels?  When they signed up for service with Dish Network, they were signing up for a channel lineup that included all of those channels, and now they are losing them.. And what do they get in return?  $1.  Wow, what a deal. ::)

I guess a few people won't mind, but I'm sure a lot more will.

I don't have anything against Dish Network, I just think there is more to it than what we are seeing.  I mean come on...Nickelodeon, MTV, and CBS for cryin out loud, are available on the cheapest basic cable packages...and yet a major satellite subscriber like Dish Network is dropping them?

Something doesn't smell right.

I saw that played on the bottom of the screen one night.  I always thought it was because of the Super Bowl thing... and now I'm gonna get razzed for bringing that back up again I'm sure :-[

Kinda got me mad, cuz I recently read about FCC coming after Howard Stern and his radio show.  Before that, I heard that somebody, if not them, was going to do rotten things to companies who slip up with adult stuff like that.

But now that I'm informed, I'm gonna stop writing now.

PS.  I have Wave, formerly Charter.

That's what I heard, too.  Plus I heard the credit was only $1 total.

My babysitter has Dish and lost her local CBS station, too.  Normally it wouldn't be a big deal, but she is a huge Survivor freak and can't watch it because local reception sucks.  She is ready to tell Dish where to stick it and go back to cable.  I don't blame her a bit.

It's over.  The channels are supposed to be back on today.

We have Dish Network. We did away with our cable a few years ago (since we can only get Aldephia  ::)) when Dish put our local channels on it. We noticed the channels being off before hearing about it on the news. What it appears that Dish is looking out for its customers. It could be something else that the public is not seeing. I don't know. But, Dish won't lose our business (even though hubby is talking about doing away with it-not because of the company but because we hardly watch). As for losing MTV, that station hasn't been good since the 80s so it is no big lost in my book.
