What is worse is that people do not educate themselves at all about how to eat.

My Mum, who is 83, overweight, and has had heart bypass, would send my brother out to Burger King to get her a "BK Big Fish" because, of course, fish is healthier than red meat.

But that sandwich is fried, and slathered in tartar sauce and other stuff to the point that it actually has MORE FAT than a Whopper sandwich.  Neither my Mum nor my brother bothered to check.

And it is not a secret... Burger King posts the fat grams, etc... in their store !   But people do not take responsibility to learn what to eat and what NOT to eat.  >:(

Exactly.

When someone eats supersized fast food every day, they are going to be fat.  Its not rocket science.

And yes I know that some obese people are the case of bad genetics, but please, most aren't.

Howard,
It's not THAT EASY.
How do I know-I'm over 300 lbs. I got that way because I AM OBSESSED WITH FOOD. It's part of my psychiatric illness, and I struggle with the problem every waking hour. Thank God my medical day-care center is helping me avoid temptation and also to deal with it's underlying causes. An overeating problem often shows up in childhood when parents use food to comfort kids or as a bribe for good behavior-these parents substitute instant gratification-FOOD-for genuine love!! I'm paying for my problem DEARLY due to type 2 diabetes as well as joint problems and COPD with asthma-like symptoms. Obesity is no laughing matter,so don't laugh at us big people. Try to understand that we DO try to deal with it!!

I don't think Howard is laughing at anybody, really.  In a rather simple way, he's saying the obvious thing to do to lose weight is to stop eating.  I am not familiar with eating disorders but I know that they exist and even though I've never known anybody with an eating disorder, I sympathize.

Just as with drugs, alcohol, tobacco and firearms, the education has been laid out for a number of years about what harms that can come of them.  It's up to the people to take advantage of this education to improve their lifestyles.  I'm not going to make fun of someone for being fat, or being addicted to crack, or whatever, but what I'm saying, and in a way, what Howard is saying, is that people should take matters into their own hands to be healthier.

What really gets me is some people have never walked in my shoes as a fat person. While I acknowledge my size is unhealthy and am struggling to change that,I don't think i'm ugly or unattractive at all. What matters most for a plus size woman(or man for that matter) is knowing how to dress to emphasize your GOOD features! And don't think that being big means wearing stuff like muu-muus and sweatsuits. There's nice, stylish,TASTEFUL clothing for big folks, you just have to know where to find it!Same with maternity clothes for expectant moms-they have become less frilly and TACKY,and more real-world stylish.

Good for you!

I am a plus size woman myself.  My problem is that I love food.  I am losing weight, though.  I just control how much I eat (trying to avoid fast food) and try to ride my exercise bike 5 miles a day.  I have also made a goal of 1 pound a week.  It isn't too hard to acheive and if you miss it, it doesn't hurt as much.

Good luck with your food issues. :)

Congratulations.  I know it seems like a small step, but at least it's a step.  Good for you for knowing you have a problem with food and taking the steps to understand and overcome it.  There are far too many people out there today who just don't care, then come crying when they've got a weight-related illness.

Being big yes it's hard for me,but when I see people with other handicaps LIVING THEIR LIVES despite their pain and suffering,I realize that I really have no reason to whine or complain! I just deal with the weight-y problem one day at a time, one moment at a time. And thanx for the support. So many people just criticize. ;)

I know people who are overweight. They love to eat cookies it seems. The snacks just make those people gain excess weight they don't need. To me if you are happy with your appearence even thats ok but somebody is overweight you can risk getting diabete's which can be very deadly. I notice people who lose alot of weight look about 10 years younger than they previously did.

Let me say I am 12 lbs. overweight (to much KFC.)  But let me say I have this friend and he has the right genetics the the extreme.  He is 6'3'' and weighs 95 lbs.  The thing is he wants to gain weight but can't.  He goes to mcdonalds, bk, chick-fila, KFC, churchs, Mrs. winner's, etc.  ALL OF IT.  And no matter what he cannot reach 100 lbs.  Hes even tried eating 3 bowls of pasta just minutes before bed.  I don't know weather to feel alittle jealous or sorry.

There ARE ways to gain weight.  I had to go on a "special" diet when I was younger because I was severely underweight (at age 11, I was 5'6" and weighed 52#).  Eating fast food won't do it for him, but it could cause other problems.  I doubt I still have it, but I'll check.  I remember eating alot of bread & pasta & some awful shakes (kinda like Ensure, but back then, they were nasty).  I was on it for 3 years until I hit a "normal" weight.  Now, I wish I had that problem. :P

Another thing about my plus-size frame is that it makes me a big,fat target for rude people to make nasty comments about! These teenagers were making fun of the way I walked, and had I been their own age and not a grownup,I would have been in tears! And their PARENTS let such rudeness go unpunished! What's unfortunate is that society pitches a 'thin is in' and 'fat is ugly' image to teens and children!

This is all too true. TV and advertising show an unbalanced view of reality to say the least. About one percent of the population look like the 99% of "young, slender and beautiful" models used in advertising. What a warped picture of reality. And most of our young people feel pressured to look this way, emphasizing outer beauty over inner beauty, which seems to count for nothing these days, or even be a detriment.

On a side note, this is perhaps why some of the reality shows are so popular. They (sort of) put the spotlight on the average person which appeals to those of us who are bored with perfect teeth, abs, waistlines and complexions.

I didn't have an eating disorder, I was just naturally tall and skinny.  I ate constantly, but as I found out, I was not eating the right things.  Unfortunately, since I've had kids and gotten older, my metabolism is not the same as it used to be.  I'm not considered overweight, I'm 10# below the upper end of the "average" weight for my height, but I'd still like to be able to get down to my pre-babies weight.  I don't think that's going to happen, though, as I've tried many different diet/exercise programs and haven't lost a pound.  So, I've learned to accept that I'm at the weight I'm supposed to be.

Some people think that the "thin is in" idea is relatively new, I think anyways. Its really not. It was once pointed out to me that even as kids, that idea is pressed upon us. Take a good look at fairytale characters, both good and bad. Watch some of the Disney movies and stuff like that. I love Disney movies, don't get me wrong at all, but this is a stereotype that has been around forever and I wish it would stop.

The good character is always thin and portrayed as beautiful, kind, and good hearted.

A lot of the time, the bad character, or evil character is portrayted as heavy, ugly, and mean.

This struck a major chord with me because I am slightly overweight and it hurt to see it in movies and stories that I loved growing up.

I congratulate Tony S N Jr. Fan for losing weight. I know how hard it is. I always used to hate it when I was made fun of, cuz kids just don't understand that others have feelings too. But, thats the way the world is, we work with what we are given and all we can do is make the best of it. I know I am trying to do that.

Good luck with your weight loss Tony S N Jr Fan!

On the subject of being made fun of, believe it or not, skinny people deal with that too.  As I stated before, I was 5'6" & weighed 52# at age 11.  I tried to gain weight, but couldn't until I was put on a high calorie diet, and then, I didn't gain much, I was still at the very bottom of the "average" weight for my height.  People don't think twice about mentioning how skinny someone is, but I would NEVER go up to someone and say "GOD!  YOU'RE SO FAT!" nor would most people I know.  I don't know which is worse, being called a name behind your back or to your face.  If I had a dime I heard "GOD!  YOU'RE SO SKINNY!" or was called "beanpole" or "Praying mantis", I'd be a rich woman.  Oh wait...

Being made fun of behind your back hurts more. At least when they say something to your face, they make it obvious that they are not worth your time.

When its behind your back, then you never know if the person will actually be a friend to you or not. Do you get what I'm saying?

People who go behind the back are more cowardly anyways, because they don't want to deal with the reaction they will get from the person they are making fun of. Whether it be for the person to cry, fight back, or whatever they would do, the "bully" doesn't want to get a dose of reality in their abusive reverie.

I know I couldn't ever be that way to anyone, cuz its happened to me before and I know how much it hurts to be made fun of, especially behind your back.

If I have something I want to say to someione, I tell them to their face in a mature, civil way, not like a cruel third grader.

I agree.  I had a kid who constantly called me "the skeleton" to his friends.  The one time he actually said it to my face, I said back to him "Yeah, well at least I didn't flunk kindergarten".  That was the last time he said a word about or to me (well, that I know of).

One thing that I might suggest that restaurants stop doing is to discontinue the "all you can eat specials".

I have a buddy who will go to an all-you-can-eat, and will literally eat himself sick,  :P till he can barely get up from the table.  He is then worthless for the rest of the day because he is so stuffed.

Normally, he eats a "little more than he should", but when the AYCE is on, he just goes into overdrive, because he thinks it is such a bargain.  Getting a bargain is good in his mind, and the more he eats then the biger the bargain, so the better it is.

Normally, he eats a "little more than he should", but when the AYCE is on, he just goes into overdrive, because he thinks it is such a bargain.  Getting a bargain is good in his mind, and the more he eats then the biger the bargain, so the better it is.

This is very sad. When I'm in the midwest visiting family, Im always amazed at the number of fast food restaurants lining the streets. I also noticed how people don't seem to walk very much. I was at a friends house once and we left to go on a beer run to a store that was literally two blocks away. I started walking down her driveway in the direction of the store thinking she was right behind me, but when I looked back she was getting into her car. I insisted that we walk, and she did but complained the entire time saying "we could have been there and back by now if we drove."
Unfortunately, I don't see this problem ending anytime soon.  :-[

Not just an all you can eat buffet, but also places like Red Lobster, or even "Mom and Pop" places that have AYCE specials.  I remember one time he sent the waitress back 5 times to reload his plate.

He'd do this every time there was an AYCE special, and just get sick!

I totally agree. One of the biggest culprits is Las Vegas. I was there last year and I was amazed and disgusted by the way people piled on the food from the buffets (which were in just about every restaurant) I saw enormous parents with enormous kids everywhere I looked. Its hard to believe this is just now making headlines.
Since smoking is pretty much outlawed in every public building, we might as well outlaw buffets considering its killing just as many people as cigarettes. Thank god theres no such thing as second hand weight gain, or we'd all be in trouble.

I don't mean to offend anyone and I know that often there's other factors involved in obesity, but its hard to be sympathetic to overweight people who shovel in food like its their last meal.  :-[

They should shut down fast food joints alltogether and lets see what happens if people go crazy or not? Would society feel better without FF joints? >:(

The main problem with most fast food is that it is COOKED fast, typically by frying in oil or grilling in grease.  Even healthier foods like fish or chicken become very unhealthy when dunked in rying oil, or slathered with mayonnaise.

Being "fast" helps people save time, so that aspect of fast food is good.  But...

We need a fast food establishment that is both fast and HEALTHY.  Is that too much to ask?

Salads are good, but some of the "salad dressings" offered by the fast-food joints have more fat than a Whopper!

McHealthy restaurants must offer only nonfat salad dressings.   ;D :P

The obesity issue is a hot debate in current affairs.  On the one extreme you've got the "personal responsibility, if you're fat it's your fault" crowd, and on the other extreme you've got the "regulate fast food, and tax fatty snacks" crowd.  I don't agree with either.
As TOYS express, people who condemn overweight individuals have never walked in their shoes.  I have tried numerous times to my fitness buff friend that it doesn't work to tell obese people, "put down the cheeseburger and go work out."
It doesn't work to ridicule and condemn.

On the other hand, children today don't get enough exercise and have excessive junkfood pushed on them.  One example, when I was a kid, the Coke you bought was 12 oz., now it's at 20 plus.
Also, we played a lot more tag, kick the can, and dodgeball; we climbed trees, rode our bikes, and roamed around town in our daily activities.  On some Saturdays I left the house at 8:00 AM, and didn't come home until supper.  A kid who did that today would be feared kidnapped and murdered by 2:00!

There is a lot more fear than there was 25 years ago, and kids are encouraged not to wander too far.  Back then your mom would say, "don't sit around all day watching TV, get out and get some fresh air!"  Now, if kids aren't watching televison, they're on the computer.  These activities don't burn calories.

I think it would be more empowering to teach kids and adults alike moderation.  Just because you CAN supersize, doesn't mean you should.  I rarely go to fast food joints, but I always decline supersizing, chiefly because I don't desire two liters of soft drink with my burger and fries.  I don't think it's a bad thing for McD's to do away with supersizing, but it doesn't address the problem.  If I can't supersize, I'll just order two burgers and two orders of fries!
One time I had the munchies, you know  ;), and I et 5 BK burgers with ketchup, and a mountain of fries with a chocolate shake.  I regretted it an hour later!
However, the government shouldn't mandate portions.

Levying extra taxes on junkfood is a dumb idea.  Unlike tobacco and alcohol, there are a million different foods one might consider "junk."  We'd all agree that Oreos and Twinkies are junkfood, but what about Wheat Thins or pizza?
The tax advocates want to encourage consumers to make healthier choices, so it wouldn't make any sense to tax Oreos at the same rate as Fig Newtons.  Do we tax Oreos at 15% and Newtons at 3%.  What about Double Stuff Oreos as opposed to regular?   Would the tax on a fastfood burger jump from 7% to 12% if you add bacon or cheese?
You can see how impossibly complex this gets!

I don't have weight problem, but I have other food issues--phobias.  I hate almost all vegetables, and being a bachelor, I tend to eat and run.  I have to try very hard to supplement my nutrition for the veggies I lack, and sometimes I know I'm deficient.  It's a daily challenge.  Are the food police going to surcharge me because I fail to purchase enough green, leafy vegetables?

I'm no libertarian, but once the state starts micromanaging our diets, we'll yearn for the fat old days!
:o
