Several faves:
Guitar solo + Intro: Loud Love by Soundgarden. Very clever segue of wailing guitar into vocal.
Guitar solo + Intro: the cover of INXS' Don't Change by Grinspoon. Slightly edgier than the original.
Guitar: the playouts (esp. some live concert ones) of Sultans Of Swing and Tunnel Of Love by Dire Straits.
Guitar: playout of Hotel California by The Eagles.

Favourite intro...'She's Not There' - Zombies (completely unmistakable...!)
Favourite gee-tar solo...'Crawdaddy Simone' - Syndicats (a rarely-heard number by a 60s British group - a severely freaked-out assault on a harmless six-stringed instrument, pre-dating Hendrix's heroics by nearly three years...!! Worth getting hold of...)

I'd have to say the best intro, (if you want to call it that) is Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, of course I love all of Eltons songs, so I'm biased I guess! ;)

This is a good one - two of my favorite intros are Blackfoots "Highway Song" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" from
Guns 'N Roses. There's a bunch more - my favorite openig riff goes to "Highwat To Hell" from AC/DC.

The subtle intro to Steely Dan's RIKKI DON'T LOSE THAT NUMBER
Fyi, and I hope you check it out for the sheer coolness of the song, but the intro to Rikki..... was taken from a 50s jazz song by Horace Silver, called Song for my father.

You know about the guy who co-wrote "Layla"? Jim Gordon developed paranoid schizophrenia and killed his mother with a hammer. Well, she was always in his head talking to him. Wouldn't leave the poor guy alone!
Yeah, he was top-notch session musician until his brain melted down.

Hmmm... Mark's typically thought of as one of the best guitarists ever. That's hardly being under-rated.

But style-wise, he's not exactly the model "rock guitarist", is he? Closer to a classical guitarist, if anything. And I already mentioned 2 Dire Straits songs back in the 8th post of this thread :)

But here in the U.S. of A. you rarely hear him mentioned, and it is very rare to hear any of his stuff on the radio. :-\\

here in the canad of a we get all the same stuff you guys get in the us of a, the reason you don't hear anything by him is because people are all into the 50 cent and snoop dogg. nobody really seems to care about classic rock anymore.

Honourable mention to Irish guitarist Phil Lynotte of the group Thin Lizzy, on the song "Emerald" from their "Jailbreak" LP. 8)
Phil was awesome, although a very raw guitar player. And far too short a time on this earth.

ooooooh, I missed this..
Best Guitar Solo's JEBUZ! That's a hard one, there are so many.
We'll ya'll know i am a total Metallica freak, and there are a few there i love..
One has some awesome stuff in it, Fade to Black & Seek & Destroy and Master of Puppets.
I also think Kirk excelled himself in Sanitarium, but it's not just him for most of the track.
Zakk Wylde is awesome on No More Tears.
Dimebag is awesome on Walk, which happens to be one of my favourite songs.
Finally... where would we be without 'Surfing With An Alien' the ultimate Satriani.
And that's all i gotta say about that!

I gotta mention the Edge's guitar riffs on U2's "Mysterious Ways" and "Bullet the Blue Sky".
And also, the guitar work on Van Halen's "Can't Stop Loving You" is very good.
