Subject: Songs of 2001

Written By: Guest on 09/05/04 at 2:45 pm

2001 was an okay year in music in my opinion, it was definately an improvement over 1999 and 2000, two of the worst years in music if you ask me.  There was still some teen-pop and boy band stuff around but it was showing signs of slowing down.  Alicia Keys came out with Songs In A Mirror and started the whole "neo-soul" thing.  This was also the year that a lot of the garage-rock bands like the White Stripes and the Strokes came on the scene.  Looking back, 2001 was very much a transition into the '00s like 1991 was a transition into the '90s.  Here's some of the songs from that year:

Fell In Love With A Girl- The White Stripes
Fallin'- Alicia Keys
I'm Real- J-Lo feat. Ja Rule
Hanging By A Moment- Lifehouse
Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)- Train
Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)- Blu Cantell
It's Been Awhile- Staind
Let Me Blow Your Mind- Eve feat. Gwen Stefani
I'm Like A Bird- Nelly Furtado
Butterfly- Crazy Town
Where The Party At?- Jagged Edge w/ Nelly
Thank You- Dido
Stutter- Joe feat. Mystikal
Crawling- Linkin Park
Bodies- Drowning Pool

Here's some other songs that came out that year as well that I really don't care for:

I'm A Slave 4 U- Britney Spears
Pop- N' Sync
Whenever Whenever- Shakira
Drowning- Backstreet Boys

ALL I remember from that horrible year is that my late son Blaine died, but not before getting into "Island In The Sun" by Weezer....suffice it to say that I love that band....

I'd say 2002 was the true turnaround for music.  2001 gave us Staind and Nickelback, easily two of the worst bands of recent memory.

Whenever Whenever- Shakira

Hey, I love that song AND its Spanish version, "Suerte." In fact, I have a copy of the Laundry Service album; every song on it is great.

Other songs (not mentioned yet) I remember from that year:
Turn Off The Light - Nelly Furtado (I love the combination of instruments used in that song)
Dream On - Depeche Mode
Androgyny - Garbage
Drive - Incubus (was a hit in the early part of '01, although its album was released two years earlier)
Hunter - Dido
Wherever You Will Go - The Calling
Yellow - Coldplay
Trouble - Coldplay
Dig In - Lenny Kravitz

P.S.: Hey, Mr. Ellipsis, are there any songs mentioned thus far that aren't from '01?

NOT! The year 2001 I don't miss at all, even before 9/11.  The music was generally crap, and lots of bad things happened that year.  My opinion 2002 and 2004 (so far!) are much better.  :)
