Subject: Local 54 members strike against Atlantic City casinos...

Written By: Tony20fan4ever on 10/08/04 at 2:20 pm

Local 54 of the Hotel,Bar,and Restaurant Employees are currently on STRIKE against the casino-hotels here in my area..and IMO it's about time! When I worked at Bally's Park Place from 1981 to 1985, I was a kitchen utility worker, and casinos WORKED everyone who did that job to DEATH...well figuratively. While in most white collar jobs you had an hour's lunch,in the casinos it's a mere half hour. And the pressure to get your work done quickly is TREMENDOUS...which led to a major breakdown for me. To a casino owner, the 'grunts'(workers)in the trenches(meaning on the casino floor, the hotel, the restaurants, and their support services)are EXPENDABLE. Horrible!

That is the way almost everywhere if you are working in a large profit oriented business.  I worked in
a personnel office and the attitude of the people who ran the company in regards to the workers was
absolutely appalling.  I worked in a bank, they are even worse, their attitude is reflected in the wage
scales and benefits offered.  You will find companies who respect their workers are the ones that have
the better paying jobs at the lower end of the wage scale, the companies that pay the most at the
Ceo level are the ones that tend to treat their workers as if they were yesterdays trash.  There are
people who still point to Lee Iaccoca as some kind of hero because he worked for one year without
a salary.  In that year he laid off hundreds of workers, and received a 5 million dollar "Christmas Bonus" for doing such a good job.  The other auto makers looked at how he managed it, say goodbye to manufacturing jobs and hello to flipping burgers.  Union? YES!

Get this...Local 54 is gonna have a HUGE march down BOTH Atlantic and Pacific Avenues tomorrow....disrupting almost ALL vehicular traffic in Atlantic City..that's certainly gonna cause the casinos to lose business..I hope all the local TV network affiliates have their news crews there!

BTW When I worked at Bally's,I was a member of Local 54..but back then '54' and the casinos had a 'no strike,no lockdown'agreement...also the union's health benefits covered hospitalization on two occasions....I had NO out-of-pocket expenses!

Let's hope they don't roll over like the US Airways pilots and take an 18% pay cut.  This is how
the worker is treated in bushamerica.  Tax breaks for wealthy and large corporations, pay cuts
and loss of benefits for "the help"
