I just saw this on the news.  Dang...she must have someone looking out for her.

Could be. Probably the most famous incident of something similar to this was of Phineas Gage in 1848. A Vermont contruction worker, Gage's head was skewered by a tamping iron from an explosion. The left side of he brain was damaged, but other than that, he survived.
