Subject: The Very worst cover songs

Written By: neebs25 on 01/14/05 at 8:18 pm

::)
Was wondering who you guys think did the worst covers and for what song.  The very worst for me is Sheryl Crows remake of GNRs "Sweet Child of Mine".  I think it's a hack job to a great song by Axle and the boys

Most of them.  ;D

Though 'Do they know it's Christmas?' by Band Aid 20 and 'Car wash' by Christine Aguilera springs to mind at the moment . . .

Tiffany's cover of 'I Think We're Alone' now should be thrown into the nearest garbage receptacle....same for New Kids on the Block's SLAUGHTERING of the Delfonics' "Didn't I(blow your mind this time)".....d*mn Maurice Starr for having those no-talent teenybopper pretty boys BUTCHER a perfectly GREAT soul ballad....

Couldn't agree more. I have made a few comments about this one on many other threads. Talk about your Jukebox from Hell song. But, Madonna's American Pie is very close.

In NO particular order:

Missing You - Tina Turner
Sweet Child 'O Mine - Sheryl Crow
You Shook Me All Night Long - Celine Dion
Without You - Mariah Carey
Stairway To Heaven - Dolly Parton
Groovy Kind Of Love - Phil Collins
She's Not There - Santana

That's all for now

Les Gray from Mud covered "Groovy Kind Of Love" and it was fine.

This song was originally done by Badfinger...thier version was not nearly as good as Harry Nilsson's whom they gave it to....but was much better than that peice of garbage that Mariah Carey did years later. Just my OPINION though ;)

Agreed on all fronts there, Mark...

If she ever knocks singing on the head, I'm sure Mariah could find gainful employment as an anaethetist - that voice puts me under every time...!!

IMO, Mariah CAREY made 'Without You' better since Nilson's version was a bland, typical '70's 'La La' pop song.  :)

Though I hate her version of "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" from Def Leppard, which should've never been covered.  :P

I read in Barry Williams' autobiography,"Growing Up Brady", that the Brady Bunch were made to record albums to capitalize on the 'singing family' thing....and the results were HORRIBLE....Why did anyone expect the Brady Bunch to be another Partridge Family!?!

Wasn't Harry Nilsson's version a lovely arrangement ;) Bland would be the original by Badfinger. Tom Evans and Pete Ham wrote it and were not only kind for giving it to Harry Nillson, but also wise. As for Mariah....to quote my friend Banasy "She makes my ears bleed!" If she didn't sing every song like her foot was stuck in a bear trap she might actually be as pleasant to listen to as she is to look at ;)

All Saints (UK girlie pop band) cover of Under The Bridge by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. How to turn a soulful lament into an airhead pop song, in one easy step- I don't object to the music of their version, more the way they've taken what was a very dark song concept (seems to be about heroin addiction) & made it into some sort of slushy feelgood thing, with a dull video to match.  :P

Boys Are Back In Town, Happy Mondays version- the Mondays are probably my favourite group of all time, but this stank. When Shaun Ryder was trying to make a comeback from serious crack & heroin problems, I saw them play this live at a concert, it was dreadful!  :P

A Perfect Circle's interpretation of "Imagine". God, that sucked.

Oh yeah, 311's version of "Love Song" by The Cure. :P
