Subject: The Very Best Cover Songs

Written By: RockandRollFan on 01/16/05 at 3:23 pm

I actually like some covers better than the originals. Some the come to mind at the moment include:

You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins~1982  I thought his version was much better than the Supremes.

You're No Good - Van Halen~1979

You Keep Me Hangin' On - Vanilla Fudge~1969 AND Kim Wilde~1987..again a Supremes song that I think both these artists made better.

Where Have All The Good Times Gone - Van Halen~1982 Just a little better than the Kinks.

I'll agree to since Without You was originally done by Badfinger but they gave it to Harry Nilsson ;)

Walk This Way was actually by Aerosmith WITH Run DMC

**Cough! Splutter!** Surely not, Mark...?!!

You Keep Me Hangin' On - Vanilla Fudge~1969

I'll sort-of give you that...

AND Kim Wilde~1987

Ack...!!

We've had this discussion before, but I'll throw in a few...

Frankie Vaughan's cover of 'Tower Of Strength' reduced Gene McDaniels' to a pile of rubble...

Ditto Susan Maughan's 'Bobby's Girl', outdoing Marcie Blaine...

Full marks to Amen Corner for doing wonderful things with The American Breed's 'Bend Me Shape Me'...

And to Zoot with their much-better take on The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby'...

But I'll let the Fabs have the last word with 'Rock And Roll Music'...roll over Chuck Berry...

Paul, as you know, I love the Beatles more than anything. However, Chuck Berry's version was better than theirs. I like Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks.

BTW, I also like the original "In The Still Of The Night" from The Five Satins.

And I only like two  songs from Mariah Carey: "Honey" & "Without You" (which I don't mind any hateful Mariah comments).

I'd also add:

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfation" Devo... also like the orignal from the 'Stones

"Tears Of A Clown" English Beat... also like Smokey Robinson's version

"California Girls" David Lee Roth... though I don't care for The Beach Boys

"(Oh) Pretty Woman"... Van Halen... the original's OK

"Higher Ground" Red Hot Chili Peppers... never heard Stevie Wonder's version

"20th Century Fox" Escape Club... also like the oringal

"Ruby Tuesday" Julian Lennon... ditto

"Venus" Bananrama... IMO, better than the original

"Proud Mary" Tina & Ike Turner... the CCR version is also good

"Mony, Mony" Billy Idol... IMO, better than the original

"One Way Or Another" Mandy Moore... Just Kidding!!!    :D  :P

Absolutely. Wonderful cover. Though I am inclined to say I like Phil Collins and Kim Wilde's covers the best over their original counterparts.

Some more . . .

'Spirit in the sky' - Dr and the Medics (I know . . .  :-\\ This version just flows better)
'Cum on feel the noize' - Quiet Riot (as good as the Slade original)
'I haven't stopped dancing yet' - Pat and Mick (as good as the Gonzalas version)
'Venus' - Bananarama (as Woops reminded me, a great cover)

Out of all the people that did 'Unchained Melody', Righteous Brothers version IMO is the best.  :)

I think what should go in the worst is her version of I Saw Him Standing There. :P

all along the watchtower by jimi hendrix is a good dylan cover. actually, most dylan covers are better than the original...

paint it black, a rolling stones song was covered by the animals. the animals version had more angst, more emotion and therefore better than the original.

turn the page by bob seger covered by metallica. metallica's cover was better IMO. the song needed that hard edge.

all of marylin manson's covers...i like manson, so i like his covers.

I agree. I think Bob Dylan is a fine songwriter but needs to leave the singing to others ;)

I came in here just to post that, and you've beaten me to it! I quite like Megadeth's cover of "Anarchy in the UK" by The Sex Pistols, not sure if it's better than the original, though...

Helter Skelter by Siouxsie & the Banshees, also U2. Prefer both of these to The Beatles version. Come to think of it, didn't U2 also cover "All Along..." ?

Bobby, I'm disappointed......oh well.....at least we agree on the ultra syrupy, sappy 'Honey'  ;) :D

"Always On My Mind" Pet Shop Boys... better than Willie Nelson's version

"Smokin' In The Boys' Room" Motley Crue... never heard original

"Lean On Me" Club Nouveau... better than the oringinal, IMO

I like both the supremes and Phil Collins version but I can see why you say Collins was better, it seemed to have just a little more kick to it.

That AND the fact that I can't really stand Diana Ross :D

I have always loved Ringo's rendition of "You're 16".  I don't know who did the original.

Aretha's cover of Otis Redding's 'R-E-S-P-E-C-T' has GOT to be one of the greatest covers of all time.

I also agree with the shout outs to Manfred Mann's 'Blinded by the Light' and Tina Turner's 'Proud Mary'...

Given that "In the Still of the Night" is a Cole Porter standard, recorded a gazillion times, the term 'cover' doesn't really apply in the usual sense, though of course someone did it first...
