Subject: Do you get on with your work colleagues?

Written By: Bobby on 02/06/05 at 11:41 am

I went out for a work's team meal last night and wondered if you guys got on with your work colleagues.

Oh, this is my first poll so I hope it works alright.  ;D

i drive cab so i don't really work with anyone. i don't like most of the other cabbies because many are cutthroats and drug dealers and i have nothing to do with them.

I started my present job about 4 months ago. I drive a truck for Yellow Transportation, which is a union job. Most of the people there have been really friendly and have made me feel welcome there.  Most of the time we run team operations, so I usually run with a partner for about a week at a time. Everyone I've ran with has been great (with the exception of only one guy who was a little pr!ck). They've all been more than willing to help me out and answer any questions I may have concerning the job. And as I get more experience and they hire more new drivers, I'll be glad to help them out as well.

Really? That sounds nasty. The most annoying thing about taxi drivers over in Britain is they think they own the road.  ::)

I guess I've always believed in "Do unto others..." Truth is, this job actually has been pretty easy for the most part--my main questions usually concern paperwork and pay sheets. But starting any new job is always a little difficult at first. And if the people who have been there a while are friendly and willing to help you get up to speed, it makes the transition a whole lot easier. Most places I've worked, I've found this to be the case, and after I'd been there a while and gotten the job down I'd help the new guys out myself. I've had maybe one or two jobs where the people there have had this attitude of "Let's mess with the new guy," but those were sh*t jobs anyway and most of those people were losers.

You live by a great sense of morals, AL-B.  :)

Isn't it funny that the people in crappy jobs do that to their fellow colleagues? There is always the chance that new people get messed around by the veterans of the company. That is not nice or fair.  >:(

It was mostly luck but there was also a certain degree of skill involved. A lot of these cabbies would go tearing around town like they were Dale-freakin'-Earnhardt regardless of who they were hauling around. Not me. Between fares I'd put the hammer down, and when I was hauling most passengers I'd drive a little faster than the rest of traffic, in a slightly aggressive yet safe manner. But when someone got into my cab who was obviously intoxicated, I'd change up my driving style. Whenever a drunk was in my cab, I drove as if I had a 55-gallon drum full of nitroglycerine in the back seat. I'd baby that sucker...taking corners really easy and making gentle stops. Plus, since I was driving more slowly, if they started heaving anyway I was at the ready to pull over quickly. And you know something? Not only did they never throw up, but I think that on a subconscious level they knew what I was doing and they'd often tip me a little higher than average.
When I was a G.I. stationed in Germany, I had the unfortunate experience of being spirited back to my barracks, after a night of hard drinking, by a German hack who apparantly was living out his childhood Formula One fantasies behind the wheel of his Mercedes taxicab. And after a few too many World Rally Championship-inspired turns, I wound up tossing my cookies all over the back seat of his cab. And he was p*ssed off, but in hindsight I place the blame squarely on his shoulders. When I started driving a cab, I remembered this experience and used it to my advantage. I guess it all comes back to "Do unto others..."

Well in the jobs i have done i keep myself to myself.. i am odd like that. If i go to a social event i always try and be the life of the party, but with people i am around all the time i tend to keep myself to myself. Me and Bob talked about this before, when i was at school.. in the space of a year i spoke to just 7 people in my Home room class.  ;D If they wanted to talk to me, then i was there, they could if they wanted. I tend to listen to music and go off on my own so they don't have a chance. I usually only get on with about 50% of people i meet and dislike the other 50%.. there is no middle ground.

Understandable, Andy. I get quite intimidated by the brash, arrogant 'me people' so tend to avoid them before I really get to know them. Unfortunately, getting to know some of the people I work with makes getting to know them worse. I wish I hadn't have bothered.  :-\\

I know that London cabbies (spit...!) have to do 'the knowledge' to enable them to do cabbing (legitimate cabbing, that is...not the dodgy unregistered lot) - 'the knowledge' involves the unenviable task of 'learning' where most of the main streets in London are (and there's quite a few...) it normally takes three years (IIRC) to mince through, and even then there's no guarantee you'll 'pass'...

I can't honestly say if this is de rigeur anywhere else in the country...

Where were we?

Oh yes, do I get on with my work colleagues?

I put 'not really', altho' to be fair I'd say about 50%...the loud, obnoxious types can go boil their heads...!

The problem here, even though I don't want to admit it, is that the jerks remain jerks even when I get to know them. The difference being is I get to understand why they are jerks.

At least every other post isn't a poll or a post about "Is 2005 like 1997?".

The current hot topic over at Toon Zone is Disney's W.I.T.C.H., a really cool cartoon based on an Italian comic book series.

However, I am watching the game (Eagles V Patriots) at the moment. It's starting to hot up.

I work in a contact centre for one of the UK's leading supplier of company cars & fuel charge cards. I get on really well with my immediate department & bosses, as we often have to work closely as a team to resolve issues. A large part of my job is tasking other people to fulfil obligations to customers, I sometimes find the relationships with those departments more difficult, as they know that if we are calling them, it's generally to request they take action on something, or investigate an issue- I sometimes get the impression people have a negative attitude when asked to fulfil their job role (particularily if it involves direct customer interaction), which is something our company's working hard to change.
I think it's realy important to get on with your bosses. I've had some right little sh**s as bosses before, particularily in the care & warehouse industries, but my current bosses are approachable, available & try to supply our staff with as much flexibilty & support as they can, which I value highly. The one thing that does concern me, however, is that no male staff member has been promoted in this department since I started here, some 3.5 years ago. I've seen 7 women get promoted in that time, some of whom were noticeably less able than male colleagues who had also applied for the jobs concerned. I'd like to move 'up the ladder' within my company, but it looks like the only way to achieve that is to move sideways first, then up- I don't envisage getting anywhere here until the female hegemony is broken, which they obviously do not wish to happen.

I voted for 'like a house on fire' which is true of my immediate research group.  We go out for social occasions, birthdays and whatnot.

There are others in the department who I don't get on with as well, but they are few and far between and easily avoided in general.

Yes, I understand Godsin. It seems they take your requests personal.

Wonderful to hear. Getting on with your boss is important because they can make it pretty difficult for you. I have never had a manager I couldn't get along with. Maybe the more women promoted thing is a positive discrimination issue - firms can never seem to get the balance right. In our place, it's positive discrimination against people who can do the job.  ;D

That is a great idea. More of those kind of initiatives should be made in place for the youngsters that leave school because a lot of them don't know what career they would like. I certainly had no idea at the tender age of 18.

I think its a problem here now.  There has been so much store put on getting an education/qualifications and getting to university that the people who aren't suited to all the studying have been left with no options.  All the engineering firms that used to run such good apprentice schemes with night school/day release options are all closing down locally.  The university has just recruited its first trainee technician after a 17 year hiatus. (I know because I was one of the last recruited.)

I looked in to apprenticeships when i left school and it's ridiculous. Most want you to have A-Levels.. which basically means that you still have to do two years of extra school before getting in on one of them. (A-Levels are like Junior College)

nowadays they do but when I left school you could get onto those sorts of things at 16 and then do ONC/HNC at college day release.  Loughborough College more or less set up its courses based on what the big engineering firms wanted.  Certainly the ONC science was set up as a day release course for the pharmaceutical/chemical firms in town.  Studying Physics there I had to do day releas as several part days rather than all at once as the Chemistry section did.

Most apprenticeships here will only take on people below the age of 18 (the year you have most likely finished A-levels) because it's cheap labour.

Now my other job, my radio job, I get on well with most of them.  There are some folks I wouldn't peon them if they were on fire, but even so I make pleasant with them, and if that's impossible, I can usually just avoid them altogether.

When I used to work (for a paycheck), I got along with most of the people I worked with.  There were a few who got along with NOONE!!!  And, then there were the stupid people, who never should've gotten the job in the first place.  Oh, and can't forget the "if you fire me, I'll sue you"  and the "go ahead and fire me so I can go back on welfare" group that didn't care about the quality of their work and people like ME had to clean up their messes. >:(  I kinda had no choice BUT to get along with the people I worked with as I was a team leader and was in charge of 20 or so people...luckily, none of the stupid people or the last group were on my team ;)

Team leader, eh? That requires a lot of tolerance and motivation. Getting along with everybody all the time must be difficult. Well done.  :)

I work for the independent radio station of my alma mater University of Massachusetts, Amherst, which is WMUA 91.1 FM!
The station has been my constant connection between transferring there in the early '90s and now living and working in the same town.  I do various chores managing the music library and also produce and host my own program, "Martian Gardens," on Sunday nights.  I air experimental, electronic, and avant-garde chamber and jazz musics.
I do have a stormy past with the station.  I fought to make many reforms and pushed for my vision for station's direction for years.  There were some implacable bureaucratic idiocies I couldn't beat.  I tried and tried until so many people hated me, I knew I had to make amends or leave.
I ended up staying and accepting the station's chronic ineptitudes.
The radio station is the job that's fun, but not the one that pays!

Do I understand this! I am one of the longest servers at my place of work (albeit it has hadn't been open that long - 3 years) and I just can't understand the stupid decisions that are made for us worker bees. One of them is that we had to have a major shuffle around and change teams/managers (so that managers don't get too complacent apparently). Instead of the manager moving to where the teams are, the teams had to move to the managers. I don't know about anybody else's thinking but I thought it best just to move 15 managers than 500 people!

'Martian night's sounds very intriguing, Max. Do you play a bit of Blancmange and Heaven 17 on there?  :)

Yep, this employee is not really troublesome to the company, just to me personally, due to my dalliances...my workplace isn't quite like a cattle market, but I've got a trio of 21-year-old female colleagues who live on an adjacent street to me, and they're always having parties there, which generally turn out to be a cross between Rabelaisian & Bacchanalian...most of my department are single young ladies, with a few 'attached' types, & a couple of gay people, which normally makes for a good mix if revelry is required. We don't seem to have anyone who's a 'stick in the mud', so quite often, post-party 'reviews' last days on end...
