Subject: RealPlayer potential problem

Written By: karen on 03/02/05 at 9:42 am

Just received this from our IT department about problems with RealNetworks products which people here might be using.

"Two vulnerabilities have been reported in various RealNetworks products, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

1) A boundary error within the processing of WAV files can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via a specially crafted WAV file.

2) A boundary error within the processing of SMIL files can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted SMIL file.

Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities allows execution of arbitrary code.

yea, real player is garbage, I never use it, unless I'm forced to by some dumb website who insists on using real media.

I like Winamp myself. RealPlayer is okay, I like it's online music store, but I don't use it. Never have.

Thanks for letting us know there, Karen. I have used RealPlayer in the past but tend to use the Creative Media Source Player that came with my MP3 player.  :)
