Subject: When did the 2000's start for you!!

Written By: Kyle on 04/04/05 at 7:24 pm

I say either about 1998 or 1999, but I do have a feeling that we're still in the '90s, especially the late 90s.  Flannel shirts are getting back in style, also boy bands (Backstreet Boyz) and pop-punk music.  (Green Day, Linkin' Park, Good Charlotte).

Really they started in 2000 of course, but 2000 still had a late '90s feel, so pop culture and political wise I say 2001. 2001 is in my opinion when the decade really got going for me.

They had their roots in 1997, technically began in 2000, politically began somewhere between October 2000 and September 11, 2001, and culturally began somewhere between summer of 2000 and spring of 2001.

2001.  Definitely.  Although 1997-2000 is very 00s in some ways.

Yeah. 1997 is much closer to 2005 than it is to 1995. I'd say the beginning of what would become 2000's culture did, in fact, start in '97 (The Internet became "household" around that time, edgy shows like South Park started hitting the air, teen pop/boy bands began to crop up). However, I'd say the 2000's technically started on 9/11. That did change us -- both for better and worse -- forever in several ways.

Pop culture itself was already starting to shift in early 2001 anyway, so I'd say 2002 was the first "2000's" year. The only major difference in 2002 to 2005 is that rap/metal was still around then, and it's pretty much defunct now. Musically speaking, I'd say 2004 was the changeover year. For most of last year, it was pretty stale IMO, but in the Fall, you started to see "New" wave/indie rockers like The Killers started cropping up. Most facets of music started getting a retro sound too.

However, it's still not that different -- Ashlee Simpson is popular, that in itself is proof we haven't totally shaken off the 1997-2001 teen pop sound. :P

If I had to predict, I'd say the way it is in late 2004/early 2005 will last until 2008/09 or so.

OK, the 90s ended a long time ago.  We have metal belts, sideways ball caps, and big black ear piercings(which came out in 2000), and when did flannel come back in style??  Boy bands have not been around since early 2002.  Linkin Park is not pop punk; nu metal, btw is this decade's grunge, as it started in 2000+ with a new sheen feel and is basically ending if it didn't by now).  I just thought I'd correct you.  Mostly because I'm tired of this rationalization.  Granted people are stil sagging their pants, but they're just out of the loop, in denial, or just dorks.

But I understand your views.

Anyway, 2000 logically was the beginning of the decade, though it would be considered the last year of the 20th century by some.
I chose it for different reasons, though.
1.  Nu Metal
2.  George W. Bush(whether you hate him or support him)
3.  Boy bands did in fact sound much more updated than in any of the 80s or 90s, even 1999.  In 1999, they were very commercialized; in 2000-2001, they were much catchier and sometimes had lyrics by the actual singers.  IMHO, 1999 pop wasn't that much different from 1990 pop.  Compare NSYNC's "I Drive myself Crazy" to "Pop" and you'll see what I mean.  And by 2002, the trend finally died down with the exception of Britney Spears, who can't really be called part of the boy band trend anymore, just the dirty pop trend.
4.  Online gaming on Dreamcast and PC, and PS2 came out.  Though online gaming started with the SNES in 1994, it just wasn't as popular back then.
5.  Reality TV was much larger than in the 90s.
6.  Rap became much more commercial.  In 1999 it was still a little listenable, at least to me.
7.  Charles Schultz died, which probably means the entire 20th century ended that day, not just the 90s.

8.  Personal reasons:  a.  I became a bigger fan of video game music, as did a lot of people(but it's not that popular aside from certain sites and an orchestral concert in California last year).  b.  I spent more time online than I did in the 90s.  Made more friends but also more enemies.  c.  I developed an interest in music, and experiment with MIDI every chance I get.

That's why I say the 90s died in 2000, the same way the 60s died in 1970.

This answer is so tiring.

We're talking about general vibes of each decade.  We KNOW the literal answer to this question, but we're discussing the actual feel and trends of the time.

Ever thought that maybe they did start for me, at the very start? (maybe not the exact date and time) 2000 was quite a changing year for me, so yeah, 2000 it is.

It's 2001 for me, when Clinton left office, 9/11 occurred, the boy bands began to die out, war on terror began, recession began, dot com boom ended. 2001 truly began the '00s. 2000 was a great year and really put the '90s to a close.

I really feel that in England, the 00's really started to get into gear around the end of 2003. That's when things really started to shift for me, music and culture wise.

2000 was a changeful year.  I just feel 2001 was more of a breakaway  from the 90s.  Avril Lavigne and Ashlee Simpson are merely holdovers of the late 90s, and you're right about Reality: you just didn't see it except for a small handful of shows until Survivor hit in the fall of 2000.

Nothing wrong with waking up with a hangover on New Years 2000.  I woke up hungover and doing Lord knows what with my (at the time) girlfriend.

This whole decade has just been like a breeze. Where did time go? This decade is 4 1/2 years old, but doesn't seem like it it at all. It seems like 2 years at most. Pop Culture wise everything seems the same, maybe mild changes. I guess there won't be any big changes, for another 3 or so years, pop culture wise.

actually it's nearly 5 1/2,  Jan. 1 2005 was the 5 year and halfway point of the decade. Yeah it has gone fast.

Pop culture's been the same since about 2002.  Perhaps its a good thing we're a bit less trendy :)

I think that's pretty normal for a decade, we're only talking 3 years, I think there will be more changes probably starting around 2006-07.

Try the past year.  At least musically, I think the past year has had more of a mellow sound to the rock.  Unfortunately Reality TV and Mainstream Rap are as big as ever.  I can't stand the investigative shows either.  At least the medical shows had a niche.

By about 2009, there might be something to actually listen to and love, man!
