Subject: When did the "1999" period become the time wer'e in today?

I'd say 2002.  by '02 boy bands were dead, numetal was a bit over its peak, and the atmosphere changed.

I'd actually say the transition was slow - all the years from 2002 to 'late '04/early '05 would count.

I remember having conversations in much of very late 2001 to mid 2004 that "Boy bands are kinda going downhill, so is teen pop and rap/metal, but nothing has officially 'taken its place' yet."

So, the old stuff (well, much of it) died out in late 2001/early 02 to me, but it didn't start becoming replaced until 2004 - or starting in 03 maybe. Although I don't see 2003 as a very easy year to define musically or culturally -- it really seemed to be smack-dab in the middle of trends slowly shifting, so it didn't have "its own" identity.

I'd have to agree. 1999-mid 2001 is like the last "90s" pop culture period".  NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Eminem, "South Park"'s peak, it was very "super-late 90s". Late 2001 on feels a bit different.  By 2004 things shifted a bit and to a lesser extent 03 too. 2007, I'd say, is when they'll be no trace left of "1999".

Actually, boy/girl bands and Rap/Metal are starting to come back, so I say 1999 is the 2000's.  There was a little break in 2003-mid 2004 when mainstream teen pop and rap was huge, but now the 1999 feel is starting to get back on its track.  R&B music is starting to sound more "late '90s", and latin music is entering the mainstream, too.  Also, there is a 50's and 60's comeback, like it was in 1999.

Ahem!  ::)  Maybe 2009 because we can't even like get rid of 1999 at all.  To remind you, the 98 Degrees and the Backstreet Boys might be coming back again.  :)
