Subject: When do you think "the '90s" ended?

Written By: Bornin87 on 05/01/05 at 5:20 pm

BTW, as a newbie I think this board is pretty cool.

...We're now half-way through the 2000's (what is this decade called?) and 1999 seems to be a even fainter memory. Of cource, considering the turbulence of the first half of the decade (9/11, Iraq, divisive elections in 2000 and 2004) it feels like we've been here for a longer time. My question for people on this forum is when do you think "the '00s" really began in a general sense? Was it 9/11? When nu-metal faded? When Ipods and blogs started popping up in '02/'03?

Ditto, but I still see 1999 hanging around at my school, too.  :D

Either Bush's innauguration on Jan. 20, 2001, or September 11, 2001. Either way they ended in 2001.

1998,1999 is still here. Fashion is 99% the same. Bubblegum-ultra forgettable-not even that catchy pop music, is still popular, just some of the groups/singers have changed. Rap is even more popular than it was. Although there was some sequels and remakes then, it's not at the extreme it is now.  Pop Culture wise, not a whole lot has changed, just little tweaks. Some of the same stuff pushed to the extreme.

Well there are some similarties and differences. In '99 Tommy Hilfiger was in and so was Gap, now they're both out. Girls also didn't wear low-rise jeans six years ago. Rap-metal isn't nearly as big as it was six years ago (I used to listen to Limp Bizkit in 7th grade and now I've become interested in older stuff!)  For music downloading, Napster was just founded in '99 and only a handfull of people evne knew what an mp3 was, and blogs were also non-existent, where now the ipod and the blog have defined what the internet is in the 2000's. Picture/video phones weren't out yet and fewer teenagers owned cell phones because they were so clunky/expensive.  I think that there are at least two or three points where we could say that the '90s "died". 9/11 is an obvious example, another would be in early 2000 when the stock market crashed and the .com boom ended, since the '90s was about prosperity. The Florida Recount in 2000 is another possible starting point, since it was the first time since the 19th century where we had that kind of an election.
