Subject: Current alternative rock

Written By: ElDuderino on 05/02/05 at 5:10 pm

I've discovered some really, really good bands lately.

The Shins, The Apples In Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Decemberists, Beulah, Hot Hot Heat, Elf Power, The Futureheads, Belle & Sebastian, Mates of State, Dogs Die In Hot Cars, and The Arcade Fire...

And I thought current rock sucked. The underground alternative scene is great.  8)

Have you heard of Tegan & Sara? They're a couple of Canadian girls (sisters) in their early 20's that I think have a great sound.

This is an incredible song. Its by Neutral Milk Hotel, its called "I Hear You Breathe".

Here are the lyrics:

I hear you breathe, as you sleep through the morning
And the sun cracks through a winter's wind
screaming out in effervescent warning
that all thats true is sure to end
but won't you peel your eyes to the t.v. screen?
won't you read me your articles from your boring magazines?
And fill the spaces.. with your lipstick screams?
Well thats all you ever gave, thats all you ever gave to me

sinking like a stone
in the water all alone
you will not find me
your reflection is the only site you'll see
a heart that has no memory
for all your tears they will drown you
and sink you for one million miles
and when the fear of life has finally found you
and crushes you inside the ocean tides
my ship will be sailing back

Man, its beautiful. :) I HIGHLY recommend downloading this.

How about a thread where we can recommend songs to each other to download?

So.. Alex, can you define 'alternative' rock.. cus you know if it's alternative presumably there is more than one Alternative.

What would you call Snow Patrol? They are one of my favourite bands at the moment...

Not familiar with them..

Although what I'm thinking about as alternative, are bands that are neither punk nor metal(those two genres seem to dominate the mainstream market right now), but more, you know, straight up rock n roll in the classic sense(these bands are a lot closer to the Beatles than say Slipknot or NOFX). Its kinda hard to describe exactly.

You gotta check out Neutral Milk Hotel. They are the best out of the bunch. They're just incredibaly talented. They are getting really good word of mouth..if they keep at it and keep improving their music and building their fanbase, I could see them blowing up one day.

In my eyes, 'Alternative' pretty much means anything not mainstream. So Alt. Rock is a very wide and varied genre. Indie Rock is short for 'Independant Rock', which usually refers to any band/artist not signed to a major label (or not signed at all)
