Subject: Beam me up Scotty

We have lost another one of our great actors.

James Doohan, most famous as "Scotty" in Star Trek has died.  He had been in failing health, suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

A WWII veteran, he lost the middle finger of his right hand on D-Day, storming onto Normandy beach as a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery.

What a lovable character actor he was!  May he rest in peace.

James was also a very gifted actor.  In the Star Trek animated series, he performed most of the "Guest" roles himself.  In what is reguarded as the best episode of the series "Yesteryear", he performed 7 of the voices in addition to his own voice as "Commander Scott"!  IN addition, he did a large number of the naration for "Star Trek" audio books.  Being gifted in accents, his audition for Star Trek had him giving dialog in over 8 different accents, before settling on a Scottish one.  He is also the original creator of the "Klingon Language", which he made for the first Star Trek motion picture.

I met him once, at a convention in 1986.  It was at a Star Trek convention near LAX.  During an open forum, he kept everybody in stitches, often giving the dialog for 3 or 4 people, a real one man performance.  He also was very friendly, being one of the few of the "stars" who would meet with fans and chat with them.  We spoke for about 5 minutes, and he even told me one of his "war stories", since it was obvious by my short hair that I was in the military at the time.

I was even more impressed by his war record when I found this today while doing some more reading on his life:

At the outbreak of World War II, aged 19, he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery, and was eventually commissioned as a lieutenant. His first combat assignment was the invasion of Normandy at Juno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers along the way, Doohan's unit made its way to higher ground and took defensive positions. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his middle right finger. The chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case; he would later generally hide the amputated finger on screen. Despite his wounds, Doohan remained in the military, trained as a pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force, and flew an artillery observation plane, though he was once labeled the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces".

A great man, and he will be missed.  Unlike so many, he remained a real gentleman until the end.

It's it sad to see a character you've identified with the 60s finally resting. It's wasn't that long ago that Deforest (Bones Mc Coy) Kelley died (June 11, 1999, just 4 days after Mom  :\'(). Both actors will be missed by every "Star Trek" fan on this planet.

Scotty was one of my favorite Star Trek charecters, he was funny, witty, and if anyone dissed his ship or crew mates, he wasn't afraid to fight back.  You'll be missed, R.I.P James.

A short while ago I wrote and submitted the following parody of Dion's 1968 hit song "Abraham, Martin, and John" for posting on Chucky G's song parody site, AmiRight:

Dee Kelley, Jimmy, and Gene

( --- woodwind & violin intro --- )

(Has) Anybody here
Seen my old friend Dee Kelley?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He healed (a) lot of people
With his beamin' good ray-light-gun

You know, I just looked around and he's gone

( *** harp glissando ***)

Anybody here
Seen my old friend Gene?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He pleased (a) lot of people
With his dream of good days to come

I just looked around and he's gone

( --- organ & guitar instrumental --- )

(Hey) Anybody here
Seen my old friend Jimmy?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He beamed (a) lot of people
And on green whiskey he got drunk

I just looked 'round and he's gone

( --- cymbal flourish --- )

Didn't you love the dreams that they stood for?
Didn't they spy a future good for you and me
When Earth is free
Some day, Earth -- ain't gonna be alone, and --

Anybody here
Seen my old friend Jeffrey?

He played Pike when Trek was green

I thought I saw him warping out over the stars

With Dee Kelley, Jimmy, and Gene

( *** harp glissando ***)
