Subject: Astronomers detect '10th planet'

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/30/05 at 2:09 am

Astronomers in the United States have announced the discovery of the 10th planet to orbit our Sun.

The largest object found in our Solar System since Neptune was discovered in 1846, it was first seen in 2003 but has only now been confirmed as a planet.

Designated 2003 UB313, it is about 3,000km across, a world of rock and ice and somewhat larger than Pluto.

Please, let's get it a decent name.... anything but 2003 UB313.  ::)

I think it is pretty cool that they found this planet.  Rooting for a good name for it, also.  I mean, who in the heck thought of Uranus?

Works for me.  Should we start an internet petition? ;)

How about "Planet X?" I always thought that had a cool kind of 50's sci-fi ring to it. ;D

Brilliant idea for X means the unknown and is the Roman Numeral for 10, as of the tenth planet.

That is the official astronomical designation. If there's agreement that it's actually a planet, and not just a large Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud object, it will probably be given a name taken from the pantheon of Roman gods like all the others (except Earth and Uranus). I think it will be a long time before that happens. There's a great article about this here:

Where did Uranus come from in the first place?

Uranus was the King of the Titan Gods (pre-Olympian) in Ancient Greece. He was the father of Zeus.

Technically, this is the 11th planet.  Most astronomers consider Pluto part of a double planet system, with Pluto and Charon basically revolving around each other.  They are tidal locked, so that both planets keep the same face towards each other at all times (the Moon is tidal locked with us, but we are not locked with the Moon).

As long as we dont give it a name similar to a Disney Character, thats fine lol

and as long as some smartalec scientist doesnt name it Vulcan  ::)

Actually since the discovery of the Oort Cloud and the debris rings that lie beyond Neptune in the 1980s, there has been considerable debate among astronomers as to whether Pluto should be considered a planet at all, mostly on the grounds that it's just too small to be one, it's orbit is too eccentric and, as has since been discovered, there may actually be bigger pieces of rock out there that better qualify for planet status. As to the "double planet" idea, most astronomers follow the convention that Pluto is a planet and Charon a moon. There is even some thought that there may well be more than nine (or ten) planets in our solar system, but they are too far away to see.

Vulcan is the name of the mythical planet orbiting between Mercury and the Sun. It was spotted several times a couple hundred years ago, but hasn't been seen since.

Wow..I'm so glad I didn't really read anything in my science or history books as I always had a feeling something would change in all those area but theyall took it so serious...case in point the tricerotops when they eventually came out with a difference in the number of horns....

and the government discoveries of who did what...

Oh well...time to make new books which the schools couldn't afford in the first place..now that they bought the ones they need, they'll have to raise money for more that are updated.. geeeezzzz!

and sex ed....knowng what we do know about AIDS etc..

Speaking of...
As a fan of the early B-52s records, I'd be happy to call it "Planet Claire"
