Subject: The "retro cool/comeback" years of all past decades?

Written By: Marty McFly on 09/19/05 at 6:15 am

I've previously said how an era seems to get a full nostalgic "comeback" after about 25 years.

Right now we seem to be on the cusp of the 70's retro style slowly giving way to the 80's - though it's far from complete (shades of the late 90's is STILL holding on for its life in almost 2006!).

Anyway, this got me thinking about every era of "comebacks" in recent history. The following seems to be correct in general.

50's comeback -- 1979-1986
60's comeback -- 1987-1993
70's comeback -- 1994-2004
80's comeback -- 2005+ (predicted end 2013-16?)

Anyone agree or disagree. Comments? ;)

We're definately in an 80's comeback right now.  Half of the dance songs that have come out within the last year or so are all based off 80's hits :)

There was a 50's comeback in the 80's with rockabiliy singers like great The Stray Cats, Shakin' Stevens.  In the early 80's, there was also a small 60's comeback when those Medley's of 60's songs were all over the charts (Stars on 45, Tight Fit's Back to the 60's, The Beach Boys Medley, The Beatles Movie Medley ...) :)

I would have to agree, by 2015 or earlier, the 80's comeback will die down, with the 90's making a comeback soon after.

I really agree with the 50's comeback in the mid-late 80's. There were a lot of movies and songs from the 50's that returned as hits in the 80's. Here are a few examples - tae same goes for the 60's comeback -

Stand By Me (1986) Also the title of Ben E. King's great hit (well, I guess it was actually 1961, but heck - it sure SOUNDS 1950's)
Rockabilly- Stray Cats, etc.
Great Balls of Fire (1989) - 1950's era film based on Jerry Lee Lewis' life.
Dirty Dancing (1987) - Even though this takes place in 1963, this is still highly reminiscent of the 50's style.
Wonder Years (1988) - 1960's based TV drama.
China Beach (1988) Vietnam based TV show.
Mickey & Minnie

I hope this isn't the case, LOL. ;)

It seems the "comebacks" last nearly a decade themselves. The 80's hasn't come back FULL FORCE yet (too much leftover late 90's) and probably won't until, say 2008-10.

Probably around 2017-20 the 90's will come back in again (I will feel extremely old then!). ;D

BTW, I also loved the "faux 50's" movies, songs and fashions of the 80's. This lasted probably until 1986 or 87.

I feel extremely old now, and I am in my late 20's

^ I know the feeling, LOL.

But just keep in mind, as long as you feel young at heart, that helps! To a degree, I felt more "old" at age 17-18 than I do at 24 since it was more of a shock then.

Late 20's seems the perfect middle ground - you're still young though!

I'll remind myself that next year....  ::)  ;D

This 00's decade may have a comeback in 2025-2030. That will be interesting to see!!!
2005 is really starting to make me feel rather out dated. I'm 27, and I feel OLD too. I don't have an iPod so, "I am OLD FASHIONED!"

I agree with Marty McFly I predict the 90's comeback is the 2017-2022 time frame too! (A little extended timeframe maybe)

Marty McFly Quoted:
"(shades of the late 90's is STILL holding on for its life in almost 2006!)."
I also agree with this statement too! It has taken a LONG time to fade out the 90's!

Once I see "Friends" on "TV Land", I know for sure we've moved on!
