Subject: Satellite/XM radio - the "MTV" of the next generation?

Written By: Marty McFly on 09/25/05 at 6:19 am

Back in the late 70's and very early 80's (up till about 1982), the music industry was in a bind. It was mostly just big time artists on the radio -- Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Christopher Cross, etc -- who had a "safe" formula that would be sure to sell. There wasn't really an outlet for new stuff.

MTV changed that, though - playing alot of music the radio wouldn't touch, especially new wave.

How similar does the first part sound to right now? ;)

Most (ClearChannel) radio stations of all formats, are now playing the same 200 songs over and over. MTV is filled with reality TV. VH1 is only somewhat better. You can't count on either of them to take a chance and play something kinda "different" unless it's another pop/punk band or rap.

So I wonder if Satellite Radio could just "blow up" in the next few years - say, before 2010. Maybe a new generation of bands will be able to get exposure on that? Have any of you ever thought of this? jw
