Way too much Vengaboys on that list.

And... is that the Scorpions, as in the German metal band? I knew they were around in 1965, but I didn't know they had a hit single then.

Agreed, but it's not my pick...

No, it's not German Scorpions, it's UK (Manchester) Scorpions. The band wasn't that popular in UK, so they moved to The Netherlands, where they scored several hits. Don't know anything about their popularity elsewhere.
btw: Hello Josephine is actually of cover of the Fats Domino song My Girl Josephine.

Oh, I care about the Dutch Top 40, Henk...!

It's always amazed me how Dave Berry's 'This Strange Effect' (#2) was a massive hit in Holland...

Don't get me wrong...it's a very good song, but how it became one of your biggest-ever sellers...oh well, there's the popular vote, I suppose!

For the record (no pun!), it was written by Ray Davies of The Kinks and it reached a very lowly #37 over here...

I don't think the above list is directly based on record sales. Our weekly hitlist is/was (partly) based on record sales (and partly on airplay), but the yearly reviews and the Top 100 above are derived from the weekly charts. For instance: being charted 1 week at the number 40 slot gives you one point for the yearly review, number 39 position gives you 2 points and so on. Thus the longer you're charted and the higher you've been the more points you accumulate. I've also seen a review somewhere of the top 10 biggest-sellers ever, and it differs from this Top 100, I can tell you. Nevertheless, I prefer this list.

What can I say - you people have a weird taste (in music)...or is it us..? :-\\

Back home is at #37. Please go (1965) was also charted for 20 weeks, but it only reached #10 position in our top 40. Other singles were charted 15 weeks or less, which apparently isn't enough to make it to this list.
(Just for the record: they released a total of 60 singles during those years. 45 of them reached top 40, and 27 out of those 45 reached top 10)

It's not a record, though (at least not for Dutch Top 40). Dutch band BZN (Band Zonder Naam, or Band Without a Name) released a total of 62 singles (1968-2001), 53 of which reached Top 40. They were less successful in reaching Top 10, however: a mere 22 singles hit those ranks.
