Subject: People of Camden, NJ should be PROUD of themselves(sarcasm meant)

Written By: Tony20fan4ever on 11/30/05 at 1:11 pm

Why? Their city has earned the dubious distinction of most unsafe city to live in!...http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/11/21/camden.crime.ap/index.html

The people of Camden better wise up, quick, or the city's crime will get WORSE.

And way back when, Camden used to be a CLASSY place!

Yea...and people from other parts of the country shouldn't think all of New Jersey is like Camden. Heck, where I live people still feel safe enough to leave their houses/cars unlocked when they go out. Hopefully Camden will have the same revitalization as Jersey City is having but in the meantime Camden has earned the dubious honor of being known as the "armpit" of the state.

I could ask how I city makes itself safe with no economic justice, but that leads to politics, and this isn't the political board.

Subject: Please Don't Insult the Good People of People of Camden, NJ!

Written By: JoniFan on 12/01/05 at 11:27 pm

Please don't put cities down.  All cities have good people and bad people.  Some have more bad people than others, that doesn't make it the good people's fault.  There are lots of poor people in Camden.  They should not be chastized and insulted because their town has a high crime rate.  :(

Didn't you start the thread about why aren't people nicer to each other?

....don't know any people living in Camden...do know people who work there...and by their desciption, it's as dangerous as NYC, Compton, CA, Newark, NJ....any large city has a lot of crime.....but, I think that a lot of residents of the city, are upset about the conditions and wish they could relocate....

....there's this thing "when you're pointing fingers 4 more are pointing back at you" & "judge not lest ye be judged"....

What exactly is the point of posts like this?

I mean, are ALL of the citizen's of Camden criminals? If I were a good citizen from that town, I'd be highly insulted by this comment.

:(

Honestly, I posted this because many cities like Camden are bad because of BAD GOVERNMENT! Funds earmarked for improving city services somehow get siphoned off for some politician's pet project..Not enough Federal Housing Authority funding for DECENT housing for low-income folks, a dwelling they can feel SAFE in and a home they truly can be PROUD of...And when Camden's RCA left...there went a lot of jobs...I think Campbell is no longer in Camden either..
It's like Atlantic City, where I have lived, before the casinos came. Maybe the redevelopment of Camden will better the lives of those who live there.

And the city did make the Worst Cities list on CNN.com. Which cites Camden's biggest problem as CORRUPTION in city government and MOB presence in Camden..both of which constitute CRIMINAL ACTIVITY against Camden citizens.

Ah, Camden N.J., my hometown.I grew up inthe Fairview section
of Camden.I lived their for40 years.I moved out three years ago
because it was no longer a safe place to live.Emminent Domain took
over in the area so they can build a 100 unit housing developement.
No more baseball field, just projects. With the Aquarium, the Tweeter
Center and Campbells Field that part of Camden is OK so long as you
stay in those venues. In my opinion they should level the area and
start over from scratch.

Camden in the 1960's, when I was a kid, had nice department stores like Lit Brothers...and movie theaters...and nice restaurants...as well as pleasant neighborhoods and nice people. Camden's downturn started when RCA closed the Camden factory down, most of their television broadcasting equipment like the first color TV camera in wide use,the TK-41 and also their videotape equipment such as the TRT-1B and the TR-70 "Quadruplex" VTR's"!  I am hoping Camden can better itself with those redevelopment projects...A big thing that would improve Camden is safe, decent, AFFORDABLE housing. And better police protection as well as better schools.

P.S. Mario Lanza actually recorded his performances at RCA's own recording studio which was also in Camden!

Why the heck do you think Camden got a Level One trauma unit at Cooper University Medical Center...not just because of auto accidents and heart attacks...Camden is one of those 'Knife and Gun Club' cities...it's sad that those crimes are foisted on law-abiding Camden citizens by the Mob-fueled easy money drug peddlers and street gangs! Camden, for the gangs and drug peddling crooks and murderers, is New Jersey's very own Compton! And as I said before, government corruption and the Mob set the stage!

There is alot more to it than this, drug dealers and organized crime are a
major part of Camden's downfall but it is not the only problem. There is
a racial tension in Camden between the Hispanic community in the Cramer
Hill and North Camden sections and the African-American community from
centerville and South Camden, mainly Fairview and Morgan Village.
The corruption in Camden city government is rampant because the New
Jersey State government thinks New Jersey ends at Trenton.Living in
South Jersey you should know we always get a raw deal from the state.
City governments in the south take advantage of the citizens because
the state couldn't care less, unless it is an election year.

The only city here in South Jersey that Trenton watches like a hawk is Atlantic City, and only because of the casinos and the need to keep the Mafia away from 'em!

The city that has a really STUPID government and Mayor is NOT in NJ. It's New Orleans government with that mental midget Roy Nagin as mayor!!

The recent backpedaling putting the blame on crooked politicians for the situation in Camden is completely disingenuous.  The title of the thread makes it clear that it is rooted in nothing more than good old-fashioned American classism, indicting the citizens at large -- many of whom are too poor to live elsewhere -- for the crime, corruption and other negative conditions in their city.

As for those in Camden, Harlem, Newark, and other "undesirable" communities who CAN afford to "trade up" but CHOOSE not to, I applaud them for their civic-mindedness in not abandoning these communities, and for contributing to the economic base and helping create more stable communities.  For the kids who have to grow up poor in these areas, it can make a tremendous difference to be able to see people from their own communities who have stable careers, who send their kids to college, and who are active citizens of the community.  It provides them with an entirely different outlook and a completely different set of possibilities for themselves, as compared with living in an environment where everyone you know is poor, unemployed and/or a criminal.

Hyperbole, sir?  Too many of us are under the delusion that our government works for the people.  Well, the don't work for the people.  They work for rich people and corporate interests.  I'm not saying it's definite, but it is likely they won't give up this sweet n' easy deal without bloodshed.

I had to wait for a bus in Camden quite a few times, and many of those times I saw stuff like fistfights and I even saw someone trying to stab someone else.

Camden scares the s*it out of me now. I won't go to Camden unless I'm with a group of people going to the Adventure Aquarium or something like that..I won't go there alone, ever!

Yeah, imagine waiting for the Patco line at 5 in the morning! (I had a friend who lived in neighboring Collingswood who dropped me off there). Thankfully, I was in downtown Camden.

I remember Camden before the neighborhoods went downhill. When I was seven years old I went to a Christmas display in a department store there. Sadly, all that Camden has now aside from the aquarium, the E-Center, the USS New Jersey, and the Riversharks minor-league baseball team is a decaying city with neighborhoods where honest, working class, law abiding citizens fear for their lives as well as their children!
