Subject: Top ten worst Christmas songs ever...

Written By: EveHarrington79 on 12/02/05 at 7:47 pm

Hey everyone! I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone's top ten least favorite Christmas tunes were. Here are mine:

10.) 'Christmas in America' by Pat Benatar -This one was first played during the 2001 holiday season shortly after 9/11; While Ms. Benatar's intentions and heart were probably in the right place, this song just came off as too contrived and forced. Fortunately, it quickly sang without a trace.

9.) 'Jingle Bells' by Barbra Streisand -UGH!!! Can we say ANNOYING AS HELL anybody???

8.) 'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer' -This one will probably be on EVERYONE'S top ten worst Christmas song list!! How this became a holiday 'classic' is beyond my comprehension!

7.) 'The Little Saint Nick' by the Beach Boys -Just plain boring.

6.) 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' by Harry Connick Jr. -I don't even know where to begin with this one; it sounds like Mr. Connick and a bunch of little kids paying homage to poor old Rudolph in a jazzy strip club! Very bizarre. Oh and I HATE that shrill saxophone solo worst of all!!!!

5.) 'Blue Christmas' by Elvis -WAAAAAAAY too overplayed!

4.) 'Love on Layaway' by Gloria Estefan -This one is on the 'Now that's what I call Christmas!' cd set but it should of been included on the 'Now that's what I call Crap!' cd set instead!!!

3.) 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree' by Brenda Lee -Again, another that is WAAAAAAY too overplayed!

2.) 'I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus' -Am I the only person that finds this song to be truly creepy and disturbing on so many levels??

And for the Number One WORST Christmas song ever:

THE CHRISTMAS SHOES!!! Ughhh!!!! I can't begin to tell you all how much I hate this morbid, putrid, depressing 'holiday' song!! A little boy's mother is going to die on Christmas Eve! Holiday cheer for all boys and girls!!!

Now what are yours?????

Add to that Christmas Shoes and I agree with your post.

My least favorite is 12 Pains of Christmas.  Hearing that once a year is too much.

Some of the traditional carols that I can't stand are:

Little Drummer Boy
Away in a Manger
Oh Little Town of Bethlehem
Do You Hear What I Hear
Oh Christmas Tree (in any language)

I don't really like how many radio stations only play Christmas songs this time of year. I'd much prefer it if they'd stick to their regular airplay, and only play Christmas songs occasionally.

P.S. I like George Michael quite a bit, so I actually enjoy "Last Christmas" by Wham a great deal! It's probably the ONLY Christmas song I like at all.

The only time I have ever heard of radio stations playing Christmas music all the time is usually Christmas Eve-and all day on Christmas.

we currently have 3 or 4 stations that started playing continuous Christmas songs starting the very end of November....and that is ALL they play until after Christmas Day.

Interesting choices everybody! As for those 'All Holiday' format  radio stations, they didn't start doing that (at least around my area) until after 9/11. That's when it started and it's now become a tradition. I personally think it's great, however the playlists never change from year to year and that gets really old b/c there are tons of beautiful Christmas songs out there that NEVER get any airplay ever! Thank Heavens for my cd collection ;)

In general, I don't like Christmas songs written after 1900.  There are some exceptions, mostly songs written and performed by a specific artist, not in the the pantheon of modern xmas pop.
Such as--

The Kinks: Father Christmas
Band Aid: Do They Know It's Christmas (Midge Ure/Bob Geldoff)
Frank Zappa: Uncle Bernie's Farm
William S. Burroughs & the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy: The Junkie's Christmas

I LIKE 'The 12 Pains of Christmas'...it's FUNNY and also pretty much what Christmas is like for some people nowadays..the dam 'lights rigger-upper' is pretty funny..because dealing with those little lights where if one goes out they ALL stop working is frustrating to no end! I find that listening to most of the traditional, older carols makes me very sad because of memories with those carols, of my family, who I don't see or talk to anymore(believe me it's better that way with the way people like my sister are!) But I do enjoy the modern stuff like Dan Fogelberg's 'Same Auld Lang Syne" as well as the 'funny stuff' like "Twisted Christmas" and "Meowy Christmas"...and yes 'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer' is sooooo overplayed, it's played out!

I listen to Band Aid's "Do They Know it's Christmas" and Erasure's "Another Lonely Christmas" at home, but that's about it. On the radio I'll listen to Wham!'s "Last Christmas" a couple times, McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" maybe once (used to like it more but it's dreadfully overplayed now), and The Waitresses's "Christmas Wrapping" more than the others, but other than those I typically change the channel.

The Twelve Days Of Christmas ?

This is from another web site. I don't know how much of it is true but it's interesting.

-------------------------------------------------------
The Twelve Days Of Christmas

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.

It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.

Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law,the first five books of the Old Testament.
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love,Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.
