Subject: What year did 2005 remind you of?

Written By: batfan2005 on 01/30/06 at 3:12 pm

If you had to pick any year in the past that 2005 reminded you of, which one would it be? I thought it was a little bit like 1989 (only with more technology, of course). The box office of both years had a (good) Batman movie plus a lot of B comedy movies; the music was a mix of new artists and old ones that made a comeback ('89 was when Bobby Brown and Paula Abdul made their debut, while Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison, Cher, and the B-52's also had hits); both years had a natural disaster ('05 had Katrina, and '89 had the S.F. earthquake); and both of those years were pivotal years in pop-culture.

Yup! I agree. I was in the '89 quake, it was one scary S.O.B. especially when I was living in the Bay Area at the time, I was only 11 then. I thought the house I was in was going to colapse, but didn't. One of my favorite albums of '89 was Tears For Fears "The Seeds of Love", yet in some strange way Coldplay's X&Y album has got that same seriousness and devotion in their music. TTF changed after that release. I didn't care for '05 and both 1989 and 2005 were sort of spooky years for me, nothing serious, just a little spooky in some ways. Bon Jovi, came out with "Have A Nice Day" whom was popular in '89 too. Those years both had some eerie similarities.

I also feel like we are re-living those years, both with the goverment and economy, and with the pop culture and trends. 2004 reminded me a little bit of 1988, with the elections between a Bush and a Democrat from Mass. Therefore, I think that 2006 will like 1990 (the music was crappy in '90, and I feel that it might be the same for this year).

I was in the '89 quake when my mom was 5 or 6 months pregnant with me, so technically I was there too.  ::)

I think 2005 was like 1999.  Seriously, though, I can see parallels with both 1985 and 1989.  1985, because 2005 was really just "washed-out 2004" the way 1985 was pop culturally just an extension of 1984, and 1989 for Batfan's reasons.  But 2005 is pop culturally much closer to the '90s than the '80s, but certainly more '80s-like than say 2000 is.

It's hard to say, because each year is unique in its own way.

Except for 1995 and 1996.  They seemed like the same year to me.

It's sort of like 1985...washed-out pop culture without much inspiration, similar fashion trends and feeling of overblown materialistic excess, election lost by a dem previous year who nobody really thought would win. Also some similarities to 89.

I agree with the '85 analogy. I think musically '05 was like '99 but it does have alot of similarities to '85 culturally. Also i didnt think Kerry would win but he did have a better chance than Walter Mondale ;D

I think '09 will be the beginning of the '10s culturally. If you saw Marc Jacobs' show for fashion week you'll get this...usually a few fashion designers start out making different clothing (his fall '06 collection looks VERY nineties), so by the collections to be released in late 2008-early 2009 alot of people will be copying Marc Jacobs, especially if he keeps releasing collections like this.

Yeah current  pop culture will be on its last leg in '08 and like you said by '09 we'll get to see the beginings of the 2010's culturally.
