Subject: What Will the '10s Be Like?

Written By: velvetoneo on 02/25/06 at 12:52 am

I was just provoked to start this thread when Donnie Darko said that the '10s may very well be just as bad as or worse than the '00s...I just can't believe that's possible! I mean, both the '90s and '80s had their good and bad, but there's always a backlash. So if I'm not an '00s person, maybe that means I'll be a '10s person? I just cannot think the '10s will not be better than the '00s. That's impossible!

Yeah, I doubt it.

But you never know.  After all, in 2000 I didn't think a decade could be worse than the nineties.

Really, lol. I called the '90s the "greatest decade ever" in this pre-millennium home video I made.

Oh.  Yeah, I hated the '90s when they ended, but then again I was born in 1990 so my memories are really late '90s-biased.  To me at the time the '90s meant boy bands and pop princesses, I didn't even know what grunge was then, lol.

I loved them for the technology and Bill Clinton, lol. I've always thought of '90s as a big decade for technological growth.

Yeah.  The '00s are really a lot more tech sluggish.  Today's tech is considerably better than 1999 tech, but not hugely so.

Going from 1990 to 1999 was just an incredible jump, technology advanced a lot in the '90s. Today too, but not as noticeably.

That's what I was thinking. 1990 is like the Stone Age compared to 1999.

But, I'm generally impressed with early 1990s technology when I see it.  It's definitely very dated, but not as much as I expect before I see it.

1993 was a big turning point in my opinion, things started to got a lot more modern looking then. My first TV from 1994, really doesn't look all that dated, but 1990 TVs do.

I think it's the wood panelling and square look, as well as the lack of things like closed captioning capabilites. They're also "clunkier" I think. Even a 1992 TV looks way more modern than a 1989 TV.

The huge tecnhological boom was probably 1991-97. Even with stuff like Ipods and MySpace, that just seems like logical extensions of the 1997, or maybe 1999-ish Internet we already know. Whereas if a 1991-er was time warped to '97 they'd be amazed at the technology, especially for computers.

Yeah, the tech boom is more 1993-2000 than 1990-1999.  Up to 1992, tech was pretty much the same as the late eighties.

Yeah, 1991 was kind of when whispers of the Internet, etc., went off, and it's also probably the first year having a computer became a standard, even if you could still very easily go without one.  1995 was more when people looked at you funny if you didn't have one.

But the real tech boom was more like 1993-early 2000 I think.  The dot-com bust sort of froze technology in 1999.  I mean, the iPod could have easily been made in 1997, without nearly as many songs.

Yeah, I'd say 1991-94 was more the period you didn't NEED to have a computer, but many people did - although mainly for stuff like Word processing and paintbrush, or the other "basic" stuff.

9/11 probably slowed technology down, as well as the recession of 2000/01. More things had to go to fight terrorism and such. I do wonder, if 9/11 hadn't happened, if 2006 would be slightly more advanced than it really is?

BTW, the Ipod seems more 1999-ish to me, but I agree it could've been made as far back as '96 in a primitive format.

I think the dot-com boom is actually what froze the technology.  And also the change of administration.  But yeah, 9/11 has to do with it too, since more money is going into war.

Do you think we're entering a second Cold War?
