Subject: When will Madonna retire from the music scene?

Written By: Electric Youth on 03/05/06 at 5:39 pm

Just asking since she should've "hung up" over 15 years ago...

I know many people have asked this before, but Madonna's only known for controversy, bad movies, and many of her albums from the '90's and this decade weren't as popular like she was in the '80's.

I don't think Madonna will ever retire...she's such a chameleon that I'll think she'll get divorced, give up Kabbalah, change her life totally, and be performing until she dies, by which time she'll be queen of the pop world. I'm guessing she'll live to 2053.

I think she'll just keep going and going.  She has the ability to manipulate the public, which is how she stays on top.

However, in most all respects Madonna did "wear out her welcome" by the mid-90s.  I think that's why she completely revamped her image around 1996.

Erotica is what killed Madonna's '80s persona, which reached its peak of evolution around 1989, when she also probably reached her artistic peak. Erotica, while not a bad album, was creatively inferior to Like a Virgin in every respect and didn't have the same magic that everybody could appreciate as her earlier work, and Sex was so controversial. Bedtime Stories was really good '90s pop, but it's her forgotten CD. She then revamped her image totally in the late '90s, with the nutty Kabbalah crap, the new hairdo, and the excessive weight loss and toning. She hasn't really been Madonna since. The new question is, when will she give up Kabbalah and being a fake brit and do something new? She's constantly reinventing herself, it seems like her to change again in the next few years.

Madonna like all seasoned singers, as of Cliff Richard, Jack Jones, Paul Anka etc, will not retired an perform on stage till her dying day.

I always have wondered when she's gonna do an all-out feature-film porn flick.

I mean if you are gonna project being a trollop you may as well go all out.  :D

I thought she already did? But if she does decide to do it, I'll be first in line to watch it, lol. Most her age couldn't pull it off tastefully, but Madge is different!

Nah, only kidding. That would just be...weird

Soon, I hope. Her music was okay at one point, now she's just bothering me.

As soon as possible hopefully. She used to be a pioneer of pop, now she is just following the crowd and not providing anything new or exciting (or even listenable).

Didn't she do something near-enough along those lines in the 90s?

Oh, she'll just keep going until she peters out...or until her fan base does...

All she's been doing for a vast number of years is selling stuff on the back of her name...

Agree

She has to be one of the most egotistic and overrated singers of all time since she hadn't had a decent song since 1990's "Vogue" also a trend follower who tend to stay on top, but tend to be more known for her controversy instead of her "music

Well, that's the case since 1991 or so, I admit, with the kabbalah and all that. Back in the day, she managed to artistically comment and create controversy through her music on religion, sex, and materialism ("Material Girl" was sort of sarcastic, actually), and make a bold and unified statement without stooping to being a follower of trends. She used to be a trend starter, now she's a follower.

I will never interpret the phrase Like a Virgin, (12" extended) quite the same way again.

She reminds me of that old lady who died on the dance floor in the movie "Studio 44". She'll be somewhat of a mascot\oddity of the hip senior citizen, but by the time she dies, no youngster will remember her glory days in the 80's and thus quickly forget her.

She'll never retire. You'd might as well accept the fact that in 30 years, we can all look forward to seeing a wrinkled, shriveled up Madonna in revealing lingerie with grandma fat hanging down off her arms and her boobs sagging down to her belly, up on stage jerking around like Katherine Hepburn or something.  :o :o :o

That'll never happen. Madonna would rather become an 80-year old plastic woman/barbie doll than let THAT happen.  :D

Madonna, literally, will never retire. Not even death will stop her. After she dies, they'll take her to a taxidermist and have her stuffed and mounted, and after they've removed all her internal organs, bones, and muscle tissue they'll replace everything with robotic parts. They will then mount her permanently on stage at a Chuck E. Cheese in Las Vegas and have her hooked up to a jukebox with every song she's ever recorded.

The fakeness about her is what makes her intriguing. And who isn't fake? Like nobody's ever trying to just acclimate themselves to an image. It's not like the Beatles didn't do that.

Written By: Eac Zeffron on 06/06/06 at 2:33 pm

Deborah Gibson isn't fake, which she puts out music from the heart and oul rather than what's hot on Moronic TV.  If she wasn't famous as a teen, she could take on the likes of Jewel and the annoying Celine Dion, when it comes to ballads. Also one of the most underrated pop singer/songwriters.

Madge is just an egomaniac that represents how "image over substance". Please, Deborah Harry did the same with Blondie when Madge was working at a Donuts shop...

So am I (from 1984 - 1990). I religiously love her old 80s stuff! However, everything after this period of time paled in comparison (apart from the excellent 'I'll remember' and 'The power of goodbye') and by 2000 I was left wondering whether the old dog should be put down.

See I'm the opposite.  While I really love her older stuff, her new material is what keeps me a fan.  I think she's evolved so much, musically...  I find some of the songs on "American Life" to be her best yet.  And "Confessions On A Dancefloor" has some of the catchiest music she's made since the 80's

Agreed, can't stand that "Material Girl" and "Like a Virgin" crap. The 90s Madonna up to American Life is her best. Not a big fan of confessions on the dance floor, but it's ok.

"I'll Remember" was her best '90s song.

As cheesy as it sounds now, I do like her first two albums the most. Although even then, there were signs of the more "matured" sound she started to take with True Blue. "Borderline" was a proto ballad, for instance.

I don't even remember "I'll Remember," proto ballad potato salad or whatever!

I wrote a parody of "Vogue" about Shane MacGowan called "Pogues."  In retrospect it was so stupid, I'm too embarrassed to recall the lyrics!
