Subject: What do you think about 2006, so far?

Written By: batfan2005 on 03/24/06 at 12:53 pm

Now that Q1 of 2006 is almost over, what do you think about it so far? I think it kind of sucks so far. The music is really lame, and there seems to be a lot of tension with people both at work and outside of work. People seem to be a lot more disgruntled now. I also think that we will be in a recession by the end of this year, which will make things worse. Once 2006 is over, I think it will be a year I'll want to forget.

Not too great, but maybe better than 2005 in that people will begin seeing how stupid some aspects of this decade are. The music has been almost unbearably awful, though, even though ANTM is great this season, it's been better recently, since late 2005...the Naima season was so boring. I'm also considering giving up Desperate Housewives, it gets worse by the minute.

I don't keep up with Top 40 radio, so I don't know much about music.

In other respects, nothing to distinguish it from 05. Also seems like a pessimistic year...

Pretty crappy.  It seems like everything's regressing, although at least there haven't been a lot of disasters this year so far.

My version of it doesn't seem to uplifting either but at least there's nine more months to go.

I swear this thread has been done before?  ::)

It appears music is looking upwards with many new albums by some pretty great bands and artists starting to come out. Seems about right, the first quarter of the year is generally pretty slow in the music/movie sector usually carrying the leftovers of last year. Of course I'm not speaking of Top 40 stuff here.

P.S. when is Snakes on a Plane coming out?  ::) 8)

Get this ... Pearl Jam are now at #41.  It's seemed like a reversion to more '90s-like styles ever since We Belong Together came out.

Falling house prices are indicating a nationwide recession later in the year, along with rising interest rates.

I think it will when Kevin Federline's new CD comes out. He will be like the Vanilla Ice of 2006. The only difference is Vanilla Ice had his 6 months (or however long it was) of fame and made some money off his "To the Extreme" album.

When Kevin Federline's new CD comes out later this year or when Paris Hilton comes out with a CD, the '00s will start to look really stupid. I'm guessing 2007 it will start to transition once you get to that. What's Fiona's new CD like?

It sucks so far but that's because it's still just like late 2005. I dont think the culture of a year really begins until after Memorial day when that years culture takes off on its own.

Yeah, when school gets out the year really forms.  "2004" I mostly associate with summer 2004 to spring '05, the mid-decade.

Yeah, most singles out now actually came out in '05. The summer is when most albums start to come out.

Yeah, exactly.  The stuff made during a certain year generally dominates the latter half of the year and the first half of the next.  Pop culture years IMO follow school years rather than calendar years.

Yeah, it goes along with the school year. I think mid '04 to mid '05 was the best part of this decade. A lot of good music, movies, and video games came out during that period. I hate to sound pessimistic but I think mid '06 to mid '07 will be the lowest point of the decade, but I think the pop-culture will turn around and start progressing in Fall '07 and improve even more through 2008.

You're probably right.  1996 sucked ass pop-culturally, i mean the macarena was the biggest song that year and into early 1997.

It's possible it will improve, but a big part of me thinks that the decade will follow the '80s and get progressively less interesting in the mainstream and progressively more interesting in the underground through the decade.

I totally agree. Even though I hold out hop for '06 my outlook for the 2006-2007 peroid is pretty bleak. I think 2008 once agian will be a changeful year.

Yeah, the "6" year is always slow.  The late part of a decade doesn't really shine until the decade's nearly over.

For me, 1996 was a great year. 1986 was ok too. It seems to be more of an 8-year cycle, because my bad years were 1998 and 1990, and 2006 reminds me a lot of both of those years.

1990, 1998, and 2006 are all kind of slow years too. 1990 sort of continued the changes 1989 brought on, and 1998 and 2006 continued the '97 and '05 changes, respectively.

Yeah, there haven't really been any little pop-culture revolutions so far. 2001-03 probably saw the most rapid changes; near extinction of boy bands/'true' teen bubblegum, nu-metal and the return of so-called 'alti-rock' to the mainstream. The biggest thing this year so far are the Arctic Monkeys; which is sort of reflective of the trend.

Yeah, I'd say '06 is a pretty slow year, though we're starting to notice '86/'96-like trends in the return of A/C and the decline of peak decade trends. I think of 1998 as THE slowest year of the '90s, it may have been the late '90s, but without the sparkling zeitgeist feel of 1999 or even 1997.

Yeah, 2006 so far has been alot like 1986 and to a lesser extent 1996. I think peak 00's culture will continue to decline throughout the year, but I dont see 2007 as being as changeful a year as 1997.

The thing I remember about 1986 is that the second half got better. 2002 reminded me of '86, how it was slow in the first half, but picked up in the later half. I think the later part of 2006 will be worse, and the first half of 2007 will be the same (more like how it was from late 1990 to mid '91). The thing that makes 2006 very similar to 1990 is the economy, and how it's going bad. I think the recession will start around the same time this year as it did in 1990.

I agree. That's exactly how I feel about those years. Also, 2005 reminded me a lot of 1989 and 1997 because of the changes (new bands/artists, premiers of new sitcoms on TV, and the styles of movies), while 2006, 1998, and 1990 are like imitations of their previous years, only not as good.
