Subject: Pearl Jam re-enter charts

Written By: Donnie Darko on 03/25/06 at 4:15 am

On the current billboard charts Pearl Jam have a #41 song.  In fact, look at the Top 100 singles and you'll see a general reversion to old standards, although fortunately no Mariah Carey songs. *claps hands*

Top 10:

1. Sean Paul - Temperature (very, very '00s)
2. Daniel Powter - Bad Day (American Idol?)
3. Ne-Yo - So Sick (very generic, but decent R&B song)
4. James Blunt - You're Beautiful (adult pop in the vein of Maroon 5)
5. Mary J. Blige - Be Without You (R&B I guess)
6. Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten (adult pop)
7. Dem Franchise Boyz feat. Lil Peanut and Charlay - Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It (very, '00s glam rap)
8. T-Pain feat. Mike Jones - I'm In Luv (Wit A Stripper) (really cheesy R&B rap)
9. Chris Brown - Yo, Excuse Me Miss (corny sheesh in the vein of Lil Bow Wow)
10.Beyonce feat. Slim Thug - Check On It (corny R&B rap)

So 7 out of 10 are rap or R&B pop.

I think this decade has two veins of rock music: adult pop, Maroon 5-ish, and emo and indie-influenced.

I am puzzled too.  ;D

;D

James Blunt's song is pretty good, Natasha's song is decent but I more like her for her looks.  :-*

Yeah, she's pretty. ^-^ "Unwritten" is a very catchy song IMO.

I actually liked "These Words" better.  But Unwritten is pretty good too.

I've heard "These Words" a few times. I seem to like that one as well. :)

I believe "Unwritten" is a bigger hit.

"These Words" is kind of cheesy, but in a good way.  The lyrics are pretty dumb really, but it's not embarrasingly dumb like Black Eyed Peas or PCD.

The only ones from this list which I know are #2, 3, 4, and 6...my favourite of which is 6.

I shudder when I look at that list. I thought the Aussie pop charts were bad, but apparently yours are worse  :P.

Yea definitely less than at this time last year, of course it could change in a couple weeks easily. I don't necessarily mind rap though, it depends on what kind it is. Sean Paul I like, Dem Franchize Boyz and T-Pain are pretty lame.

Oh no, I like hip hop.  In fact, the music I make is probably more hip hop than anything else.  But the rap of the past ten years that's on MTV (that is, the rap 98% of the population associates with the genre) is really a letdown.  There are exceptions though, I like OutKast, Eminem, Snoop, Kanye.

Is it 1992?  'Cuz if it is, I'm going to dust off my flannel and head to the Starbucks to listen to some Nirvana on my Walkman.

Yea I agree. I like those 4 as well, too bad Eminem has gone down the tubes in the last few years. His new stuff sucks compared to "Without Me" "Lose Yourself" and "The Real Slim Shady".

As far as rap goes...I don't mind listening to it if (1) it came out more than ten years ago, or (2) Will Smith sings it (from any year).

I like numerous '00s hip-hop songs. Sean Paul's "Get Busy" is one of my absolute favorite songs, even though I understand about 3 words in the song. Eminem's "Lose Youself" is also excellent. "Dilemma" by Nelly and Kelly Rowland is also one of my favorites. I also like songs by Ashanti, Missy Elliot, Outkast, Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye, BEP, Nivea, Fabolous.

Is Ashanti really hip-hop, though, or is she more R&B like Alicia Keys?

She is really more R&B, but she's more hip-hop influenced than Alicia Keys is.

I have to say, for once, I have no major complaint with the majority of stuff on our charts right now. Like Brian said before, I think Sean Paul has some good stuff. I also like Daniel Powter - I think he's a cool singer. I would contest putting him in the American Idol genre; his song got used on the show during some of their video montages, but he himself isn't an AI guy. Really, though, quite a bit of the R&B and Hip-Hop stuff around now is decent. When I'm in the mood for the genre, Mary J. Blige's current and past offerings are great representatives of 90's and 00's R&B. I mean, I won't claim to enjoy every song around - I could easily go without hearing more from the Chris Brown catalogue, and I wasn't thrilled to have this Pearl Jam tune storm rock radio as it has... but, overall, I can't complain too much. Heck, we've even got some hyphee taking the mainstream with "Tell Me When to Go" sitting at #35, and then KT Tunstall is currently in the lower reaches... really, I think this is a good time on the charts, at least as far as greatest diversity of taste and higher quality is concerned.
