Subject: myspace..... what's the big deal?

Written By: annonymouse on 04/11/06 at 9:08 pm

nowadays, everybody is obsessed with myspace. at first it was just high schooler's. then college students. now middle schoolers. and pretty soon, elementary schooler's will have myspaces. they're so pointless. at inthe00s, at least we talk about actuall topics. on myspace, you just put up some pictures, a little info about yourself, and have your friends comment on the pictures saying "i love ur pic u look soooooo great" or "hey u wana hang out on fri we can meet at cvs"  it's soo pointless. i mean, doesn't that get boring after a while? i'll bet that if i could shut down myspace for just i week, the whole world would riot.

What do you think of this riddiculus site?

IMO, it's not ridiculous as it's the only way I can keep track and of talk to people I went to H.S. with, now that I live 700 miles away and haven't been back since grad.  None of the people I know who have a myspace account use it to find guys, put up pornographic pictures of themselves or slam other people.  It's sad that the irresponsible actions of the few have led to people thinking that everyone who uses that site acts the same way.

I know some people who use it for blogging purposes, but I have a LJ for that.

Also, what's so wrong with your friends commenting on a new picture you put up?  A friend of mine went to London for her spring break, and I had fun going through her pictures and commenting on where she was at and what she was doing.

I registered to for the heck of it...been back about once since. They've probably deleted the account now. I see don't see anything revolutionary about it; if you want to talk to friends online, you've got msn messenger, if you want' a dating service, they're millions of those already. I guess its more to have your 'own' website/blog which is a bit more connective than geocities.

I agree with what your saying, but part of what that site is for is dating, its pretty much obvious by the fact in your profile you pick what things you're looking for, and thats an option.

Although I haven't been able to get any use out of it in that regard.  Le sigh.

Right, and some of the people I know have networking and friends as what we're there for.  I know that a lot of people use it to hook-up, but I'd venture a guess that most people do that purely for attention and not because they're genuinely looking to find someone to date.

$580 Million Dollars, that's THE BIG DEAL!!!.  Rupert Murdoch bought it to help promote his Fox Network.  Myspace generates millions in revenues each year.  I say this "ridiciously" site has pretty much filled a "void, want, and need" in alot peoples lives.  Not a bad investment into a business that 2 guys put into in 2003.  Think about it, $580 million for something you put just 2 years of your life.
This "ridiciously" site is definitely making 2 guys really really happy and millions of people around the world very happy to be part of it.

I personally used it to find a friend I knew before, but now I use it to find new music through MySpace Music.  Man is there alot of bands with good music out there.

It's not a ridiculous site at all.  Many people have one to keep in touch with old school friends, or to find romance.

I have a MySpace and I love it

It ain't my cup of meat; however, that said, my solution is... I don't like it, so I don't use it. I have my reasons for it, but that doesn't mean I feel a need to slam the entire site as ridiculous. You don't like it, don't use it. You don't like it, ignore it. Not sure what you hope to gain from this sort of post about it, though.

I think it's an ok place if ur not on it 24/7. I mean if ur addicted to myspace(which some of my friends are) then you've got a problem.....then there's this other place i've heard of called tagworld. I haven't went to the website yet but it's almost exactly like myspace. great now there's 2 sites people can be addicted to. ;D

Well I think the sites' main selling point is in collecting friends, even celebreties. Personally though I like using a better designed and older sight called Tribe.

I don't like it.  I registered about 5 months ago because my sister seemed to like it.  Once I had a look around I realized that it's a bit confusing and very very slow.  And it seemed that there were a lot of phony people on there looking for attention.  I just don't use it.

I've never registered on that site, let alone visited it. I suppose I could check it out sometime (given the pros I've read here), but I probably won't find it very appealing, given the cons. :-\\

I don't use it. I have a phobia of putting that much info about myself up. And it's addictive and irritating. All people at my school use it for is to put up pictures of each other throwing up.

How many other people here think something absolutely horrible will happen on it, like a chain of killings, and it will drive people away from it in the late '00s? The same thing will happen to these sites that happened to chatrooms in the late '90s and early '00s. It's a faddish thing for alot of people that they'll get sick of and overdose on within the next few years.

Same here...I don't wanna reveal too much stuff about me. Also, for many years I've liked writing about things that go on in my life... but most of the time I wouldn't share it with anybody. I keep a personal log about these things, but only in a Microsoft Word document.

I don't get MySpace either.. as far as I know, no one actually uses the Blog feature.

It's essentially a big club that stands around and does nothing... half the people who have MySpace only have it to look at pictures of teen girls in slut clothing, anyway.

I give it 3 years until some pyscho picks up a young girl and murders her. I know this sounds like a paranoid prediction, but it's definitely possible. Guys have picked up girls in chat rooms why not my space? But I had one but deleted because this girl from high school kept messaging me to death.

I actually heard something about myspace on the news today.  Myspace supposedly hired a Safety Czar to help prevent online child predators from using myspace as a means to lure children. I personally don't think it will work.

My space security might also start using my space as a way to catch underage kids drinking and smoking according to an article I read. That would ruin the whole freedom of my space.

Actually, I do use the blog feature and most of my friends on MySpace do as well.

And I've been able to use it to stay in touch with people from my old school who I otherwise wouldn't be able to, so I appreciate it for that very much. Another point of MySpace to me is self-expression.  What you put on your "space" is kind of like what teenagers put on the walls of their bedroom.  For me its one of the ways I express myself.

My problem with MySpace is that the general population that uses it is like those kids at LJ who use all the awful features.

There's the neon backgrounds and neon text, people who put awful playing music in their backgrounds, and the fact that about 80% of the users can't string together a properly written, gramatically correct sentence. Someone actually compared MySpace to what Geocities was like in the mid-'90s... I might be inclined to agree.

I have a Myspace.com profile. I find it fairly beneficial. I try to not make mine a show off place. I mainly just keep it interesting enough for my family and friends who visit it. I don't have a constant flow of photos for people to look at. I use Webshots for that interaction as it's easier to get around. Myspace.com is just for fun. It shouldn't be meant for any kind of seriousness. I'd be worried if our president had a profile (although it may not surprise me, either)  ;D

Is Myspace owned by Rupert Murdoch. I was thinking of opening a Myspace page, but if it's got anything to do with Murdoch, I won't. In fact, I will email those I know who are on Myspace and encourage them to go elsewhere.
John Walsh and Rupert Murdoch have been consorting. Walsh reported on Fox News that Murdoch wants to make Myspace the safest on the internet. That's what gave rise to my suspicions.

The trouble with a guy like Walsh is he lost a kid to a child predator, and his activism centers on the safety of children from predators, so you can't really disagree with him...however, the rightwing exploits Walsh to push a pro-censorship, pro-Big Brother agenda!

I'm sure you've had PLENTY of success using Myspace, Jase..I've tried it before too - you spam hundreds of random girl's pages that live nearby you, and maybe get one reply if you're lucky. It's such a cruel, cruel deception. I haven't tried it yet (I've registered for a few sites, but haven't paid for messages), but I hear the success rate on dating sites is much better than Myspace.etc

I don't like to get too much into generationology, but myspace is nothing more than the Generation Y version of telephone and letter writing. I made up a screen name because I wanted to see someone else's profile, but I don't use the features on it. I did a very non-scientific study to see what ages most myspacers were..I am willing to bet that a big bulk were under 18 but could not search for that young. Memberships increase modestly and slowly the younger people get through the 30s and 20s..and then around age 25 it just spikes and keeps growing the younger the age.  I think at 29 I am a bit too old for looking forward to see who "comments" on my page and how many friends I have and such. I have a daughter to raise, don't have time for the nonsense. But if I were 20 and single today, it may be a lot of fun.
