Subject: What's cheesier: the '80s or the '00s?

Written By: Donnie Darko on 04/26/06 at 4:05 pm

In my opinion, the '80s defines cheese, but I'm actually going with the '00s.  Things are just so stupid right now  ;D

I'm not quite sure.  There's a lot of things about this decade that suck and are cheesy, but I don't know if they approach 80s level cheese yet.

But the 80's was fun and cheesy, 00's are just plain cheesy!

...Good description of it. The '80s were very cheesy but didn't take themselves seriously at all, they aspired to be nothing more than fun. The '00s are cheesy to the max and yet take themselves incredibly seriously (emo, anybody?)

The 80s.

Why? Because it's easier to look at the past with rose-tinted glasses (sorry for the chliche) and forget the overly cheesiness of that decade. Try and put yourself forward 20 years from now (2026) and ask yourself the same question.

The rose-tinted '00s, hmmm.  Too bad the world's gonna end in 2012.

Why do you believe that, honestly? Look at the other Mayan predictions...I mean, they probably thought their civilization was going to end in 2012 too.

I don't really think the world's going to go out with a bang.  I do think a paradigm shift of human consciousness will occur then.

Why? There has never been a paradigm shift of human consciousness. We're furry, smelly animals dressed in clothing, with a troublesome intelligence.

No, not faith, just a feeling.

I have a weird feeling that a faith revival will sweep the NE and the West Coast and big Great Lakes cities during the late 2000s and early 2010s, focusing on Catholicism and Judaism, during a brief depression.

Yes...everyone tells me that. I think I might. By "faith", I mean revival of interest in ethnic origins and tradition as the yuppie-based '00s society falls out. Not like "Burn homosexuals and heretics!"

Okay.

I'm of the opinion the faith is faulty logic, but again that's just what I think.  I believe people should be open-minded.

That's not to say that the religions have nothing to teach, or tradition is worthless, though.

Getting back to the real topic...

I really think the '00s are the new '80s, with the revival of the explicitly materialistic styles and focus in culture and the materialism, and the super-silly cheesiness. In terms of malaise, they're a '70s, though. The '90s were pop-culturally very much a "new '70s."

They're like the culture of the '90s with the fickleness of the '80s.

Or a '90s cultural organization anyway, but waay simpler and less interesting, and with similar but not the same at all stuff in the categories.

Well, looking at both of the decades, id have to say, the 00's DEFINE cheesy.  Its just flat out a horrible decade.  I mean, look, we have stuff like Emo, a bunch of kids who wish they had problems.  And look at our TV shows, and sitcoms and stuff, they're so pathetic.  Hollywood and the media IS SCRAPPING THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL to keep people interested, so they turn to stuff like porn, sex, drugs, and violence to keep people coming back.  This might work if they didnt fail so bad at presenting it.  This decade is way to moraly corrupt.  Pretty much what sets apart this decade from the 80's is hollywood.  Today, hollywood has run out of ideas.  It just sickens me.  Their movies are so terrible, they have just plain run out idea's.  Celebrity's try to make themselves "look good" by trying to do things for the environment and crap like that, when really, there just doing it because they're getting paid.  And what makes it worse, is that once hollyoowd and the media finds something people almost get into, they make 20 million spin off's of it.

Well yeah, there's different bands. Also, while most '00s genres were popular in the '90s, many '90s genre died too.

Yeah, but they're sort of different. Like the classic rock of the '70s was basically an evolution of stuff from the mid-late '60s and '70s Philly soul and funk were '60s soul evolutions, rap today is the evolution of '90s rap.

True.  They're definitely evolved, and more teen-oriented as opposed to aimed at 20 and 30 somethings.

Really, until the about 1976 "disco/punk" mark, the '70s were arguably less different from the '60s than the '00s were from the '90s. The 1970-1975 period was separated by political apathy, politically savvy and serious TV and movies (including the "golden age" of American film, or whatever) beginning, different interior design schemes, and evolved '60s genres (singer-songwriters, arena rock (inc. prog rock, glam rock, early metal, Southern rock), Philly soul, funk, cheesy top 40 pop) from the '60s.

I agree. The '70s were more like their predecessor than any other decade.  Even the disco era wasn't void of '60sness.

The '70s were very much a different decade, but everything was just an evolved form of the '60s until 1976 or so.
