Subject: Am I A Emo/Hipster?

Written By: Trimac20 on 04/27/06 at 8:07 pm

I'm not taking this very seriously, but judging from my musical tastes and a few other characteristics (and assuming you know nothing of me) would you label me an 'indie-mo/hipster?'

Some of my favourite musical styles/artists include;

Pre 1960s: Some classic pre-war instrumentals, jazz/swing, Blues, Piano Rags, Some classical music, Folk

1960s:
Some Motown: Shirelles, Shangr-las, Supremes, Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye.etc
Some early British invasion e.g. Gerry and the Pacemakers, Lulu
Later British invasion like the Hollies, Peter and Gordon, the Animals, the Troggs
The Beatles
The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix Experience, psychadelic rock like the Grateful Dead, the Turtles, Love, Youngbloods.
Janis Joplin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Kaleidoscope

1970s:
Early Classic Stadium rock: Led Zep, some Deep Purple.etc
Prog rock, Queen, Van Halen, some Boston, Kiss.etc
Some heavy metal, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep.
Acoustic/non-acoustic ballds by singer-songwriters like Don MacLean, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Carole King.etc
Reggae, Some Disco, Punk

1980s:
Certain melodic synth-based pop songs like those by Tears for Fears, Madness, sub-punk genres like The Jam, The Specials,
XTC, Adam Ant.
Early U2, The Pixies, The Stone Roses.etc.

MORE IMPORTANT...

1990s:

Super-pop Grunge like Nirvana, a few quite embarressingly early 90s R'n'B/rap/hip-hop tracks (M.C.Hammer),
'Depressing' music like the Smashing Pumpkins...
Britpop: Oasis, Blur.etc
I liked MOST pop music in the period 1995-2000, which included Green Day (90s punk), Third Eye Blind, 90s disco music.etc.

2000s:

Quite alot of so-called 'hipster' music like Architecture in Helsinki, the Grates (sort of), Mercury Rev, New Buffalo, The Slits, Sarah Blasko...some 'adult contempary' music, World music.etc.
A few good mainstream groups like the Strokes, Flaming Lips and Franz Ferdinand....

No. Somebody who likes Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Uriah Heep, Nirvana, and the Smashing Pumpkins is not a hipster.

Aren't hipsters obsessed with poetry, and 'literary cool?' According to what I've read they are the natural descendants of the Beatniks, so must have read Jack Kerouacs, 'On the Road' the Beat Bible. That would imply a certain appreciation of the past, would it not?

As usual, wiki has the most comprehensive definiton of 'hipster':

I have a feeling some of our own members have had a hand in this particular article  ;)

No, not really.  You don't smack of a hipster to me.  Just eccentric, in a good way of course ;)

Now my older brother, he wouldn't admit it, but he's definitely a hipster.  Not really bad, but I'd call him one.  He's actually a hip hop-ster; he likes indie hip hop and indie rock, and tends to judge people by the music they listen do, although certain not to a horrible extent.

Would anyone say the hipster is a type of NERD?

Yeah...but not Uriah Heep. Other than David Bowie and maybe the Beatles, hipsters are anemic to classic rock. Jack Kerouac sucks.

My God ... hipsters LOVE the Beatles.  Which again is ironic, since like Trimac has pointed out they're the poppiest, most accessable music there is.

Hipsters purposely de-involve themselves with the 'cool' preppy/jock group...to them an overt display of masculinity is somehow a sign of lower intelliengence and conformity (so that's what they say). They can be said at cafes discussing philosophy or literary works of art, poetry, and usually music is just part of that. They also tend to have internet usernames related to philosophy or poetry. Most see music as an extension of their culture rather than for their art (hipsters are the type who go to art galleries not because they like, but because it's 'culture'). Often wears quite useless Buddy-holly style glasses...

Indeed. I have a feeling they like the Doors on a level. They hate the whole Jim Morrison worship thing (cult, if you will), and publicly say that Morrison's lyrics are not poetry at all, but I know they listen to them.

Obviously if you like a band that is not mainstream, you are trying to disconnect yourself with mainstream America because you are a fascist.

Hipsters probably hate hippies.  They probably think they're "tards".  Although the hipster is a liberal-minded person, they're too snobbish and not angry enough to be hippies.

This is sarcasm, right?  I don't think listening to 50 Cent and Nickelback is exactly patriotic  ;D

Well, yeah.  Say, one person listens to The Vines and another person listens to The Flaming Lips.  They're both in the same group of snobby elitists who can't stand retarded hippies.

Oh, and people who make sweeping generalizations all over the place.

Hipsters care too much about looking hip...and having scraggly hair fit for a possum to live in, and not showering for months is probably not 'hip.'

Come on, man, I'm generalizing.  Not all indies and emos act exactly alike, it's supposed to be a generalization.  Plus, I think it's okay to generalize people if they generalize themselves by assimilating into a clique.

Generally I listen to what's on pop radio. I listen to some alternative as well. I really don't consider myself hipster even though I listen to most of today's popular music.

hipsters are militantly anti-pop - they also hate Commercialism, America, Capitalism...anything other than their psuedo-Liberal Socialist sphere (now, who's generalising) ;-).

Hipsters don't really have credible political opinions...they just go blindly against whatever Bush likes and the red-staters like, or something. They like Bright Eyes and lattes.

Yeah, hipsters wouldn't go to a political demonstration or not shower, it's most definitely not metrosexual and they're missing time at the Urban Outfitters.

I can't say I know exactly what a "hipster" is. Must be a solely American term?

I didn't really hear the term until I joined this board. But I can definitely identify people who have 'hipster' tendancies over here.

Hipsters are basically elitist snobs who think they're better than everyone because of their musical/fashion taste and are obsessed with being "hip" (i.e. up to the minute in every realm of their faux-boho world.) There're also teen hipsters, which is a little more toned-down but equally snobby and irritating.
