The years 1981-1996
Yeah, I agree. I think I've tried to decide exactly what the beginning of Gen X culture was a number of times...or what the first "Gen X" thing was. Sesame Street might be the first Gen X thing in terms of kid's culture. I think new wave was the first "Gen X" cultural movement, what nu metal, '90s goth, and teen-pop were to Gen Y.

I'd say:
Boomer era: 1964-1980
Xer era: 1981-1996
Yer era: 1997-2012
Zer era: 2013-2020

What would you pinpoint as the first "Gen X" thing, though? Prince, Joy Division, Blondie all seem like they're the beginning of it in one way or another.

Yeah, you're right. It was a boomer thing that was more Gen X in character and appealed more to a wider audience of Gen Xers. Disco was really the last boomer thing, the first being the British Invasion or Phil Spector.

I'm not sure what the last true Gen X thing was, because it's so muted with Y. Indie rock like Pavement, Weezer, and the riot grrl and gangsta rap movements are definitely candidates. Nu metal was the first truly Y rock movement.

Third-wave ska?

Third-wave ska?
Maybe, though I think it's both X and early Y, and there were definitely peak Yers who sort of liked it. It's definitely one of the last things from about 1996-1998 before Yness totally took over, though.

Third-wave ska is something I associate with late '70s-mid '80s born people.

Yeah, it's one of those things that I think of the typical fan of as being an early Yer born in 1982 or so.
