I agree - the Politics/State of the World and TV are the most noticeable to me.

Sad as I am to say it, I'd say the '90s are just about all the way gone now. :( Although they're not as "blatantly" gone or irrelavent to the present as the '70s were in 1986 or the '80s were in 1986, they're still gone. Maybe, like 3% at the most is still around.

Would you say 1997-05 was sort of its own transitional "decade" between the two?

I think 1997-2005 was the "millenial era" or the "lost decade": not totally '90s, but not totally '00s.

In my opinion, the '00s began around mid-2001, but the early '00s, even as late as 2005 were very attached and similar to the '90s, culturally. '00s culture didn't really take off completely until the fall of 2005.

I don't know to me the last year that any real ties with the '90s at all was probably 2003, I think by 2004 it was 100 % or very near 100 % 2000s.

True, I now am really strong on the idea that 2003 was a "changing" year. It was just so subtle that it was harder to notice at the time, lol. But that was the last year any '90s was truly noticeable.

I guess it sort of happened before with 1983 and 1993 too. Those were peak, or nearly peak years for the '80s and '90s respectively, but when the traces of the previous decade more or less vanished.

Meh, I don't think 1997-2005 were one decade. More, they were sort of a "meta-decade" influenced by the Y2K period, though I'd put it going back to 1996 with the Macarena and the beginnings of teen-pop and glam rap. The whole 1976-1985 period could be said to be another "meta-decade", and 1987-1992 or so was another one, respectively the "disco/punk/androgynous" and "old school/Berlin Wall" eras. There's sort of the overall decades and then "meta-decades."

I think the '00s became a decade, first in terms of state of the world as you said, and to a degree lifestyle, in late 2001, but it took until spring 2003 for the music and TV to mostly become '00s. I also agree fashion took the longest, until like late 2003, to really become '00s. I agree with Brian, the last year with any significant '90s ties was still 2003. If you were in high school it was less subtle...suddenly emo and preps appeared!

Yeah 2003 was a significantly different enviroment than 2002, a lot changed and it changed quickly, by late 2003 it was definitely totally '00s. 2002 was still a very early '00s semi 1999ish enviroment. The early to maybe the mid part of '03 was the last part of this decade that had any '90s in it at all. The fall of 2003 was about 100 % or 99 % 2000s.

Except for maybe some peripheral fashion and attitude/slang things which were still a little 1999 and have faded away somewhat. I think it was most noticeable in middle and high schools, that change in 2003.

Yeah. 2003 was the last year that had any '90s to it at all. At first I thought there were still traces of the '90s up to early '05 but looking back I dont really think so now. 2004 up has been 100% 2000's.
